Hey, well, nothing more than the title suggests, what are the best, or favorite Amiga Shoot 'em Up games? OK, to start, I'll say I LOVE Banshee AGA... even if I have to cheat to get beyond even the 2nd level!!!! Ilyad, and Tubular Worlds AGA get high votes from me, as well.
OK, I randomly Googled 'Amiga shoot 'em ups' and found lots of games I never heard of... so , please, peeps, lemme hear of the best Amiga shoot 'em ups!!
Ummm, and can someone point me to a copy of T-Zero???? Please? SOMEone??? I ran the demo from an Amiga Format CD.... but... man... REALLY... ya wanna know what's messed up about the Amiga nowadays? .... I AM WILLING TO PAY FOR A GAME, YET CAN'T BUY IT!!!
..man, history repeats itself.... I had to order Theatre of Death from Psygnosis directly, as all US dealers, and even a UK dealer i talked to, told me... 'not available'.......
-
My 1200 is sick right now but the ones I've enjoyed (other than Banshee)
Project X
Agony
SWIV
Silkworm
Disposable Heroes
Apidya
If top down shooters count, throw in any of the Alien Breed games, as well as Chaos Engine
-
I would also say Zeewolf. Thats a pretty entertaining game.
Would you consider Alien Breed: Tower Assault as a shooter?
-
One part Amiga, two parts vodka.
-
Hybris is pretty nice, better than Battle Squadron in my humble opinion, even if it does lack a 2 player mode. Battle Squadron isnt bad though either. Z-Out for my tastes is one of the best shooters on the amiga. Very under-rated game. Gets better as the game goes on too. The mothership level (ala level 3 rtype) is pretty darn cool. Mothership + multiple levels of parallax scrolling.
-
I love Agony, check out this movie trailer someone made for it:

Hey everyone, thanks for the input!
As for Alien Breed: Tower Assult, well, it's a shooter I guess, not a shoot 'em up in the strictest sense of the word.... but still a great game!
Just realized, I have SWIV, but not Silkworm, Ack!
-
I used to have one heck of a lot of fun playing a little game called Bratwurst. It's a 2D vector space shoot 'em up. Only downside is that it's for 2 or more players....but probably the most fun I ever had on any two player game, besides perhaps The Chaos Engine, or maybe even Hired Guns (that's good for 1 player as well).

I'd also check out Sidewinder. It's another game similar to Banshee & Swiv, so you may like to try that one too.
-
I used to get high playing Silkworm when I was a kid.
-
DELUXE GALAGA AGA :afro:
-
Xenon II was fun and very polished.
I only has the coverdisk demo, didn't have much money in those days.
-
Jesus, I can't believe nobody has mentioned Super Stardust AGA. It is THE shootem up to play, even today there is no finer playing looking or sounding shootem up. Hell the AGA disk version plays and sounds better than the PS3 version.
That game is soo good that to play it as smoothly on joystick you need a PCI graphics card, 16bit Soundblaster and Pentium 133-150mhz PC (120mhz for keyboard only play, don't ask me why PCs were pathetic like that in 1990s!)
-1 for Flying Shark and Xenon II (both had the sh1t Atari ST 16 colour graphics shoved across with NO improvement at all)
-
Hybris, Battle Squadron, Datastorm (all by S0DAN!)
Silkworm
-
DELUXE GALAGA AGA :afro:
Insectoids from Acid Software (Blitz Basic demo game) is just as nice, I even prefer it myself :)
Also Project Buzzbar is fun for a while, pretty smooth too (It's like Time Pilot 84/II)

Just a shame it sucked on the Mega Drive.
-
Just a shame it sucked on the Mega Drive.
Sucked compared to the likes of Thunderforce III anyway even if it was like the 'Amiga' version with it's crappy ST 16 colour graphics :roflmao:
-
Nah it just sucked lol. I enjoyed the Amiga version but the Mega Drive version didn't feel as good to play.
-
The ST version of Black Hornet is nice smooth scroll so even the Amiga version must be good.
-
Many of my fave shooters have already been listed so I will just list my fave old shooters from 1987-1988.
1987: Plutos
1988: Menace (the prequel to Blood Money)
1988: Sidewinder (The coders were friends of mine. I pushed them to use 64 colors but they said "not enough memory bandwidth")
-
My favorite ( well one of many) SILKWORM!

Mega Typhoon, AFAIK the only game on Amiga using 50Hz sprites:

Of the traditional 2D-shooters I liked Blastar and Disposable Heroe aswell as Project X. Ofcourse the original R-type wasnt half bad. But the best one is for sure Banshee.
@Cammy never saw that one before, nice.
-
Katakis and R-Type are two of my faves (although pretty much the same game). Also liked Menace for a while. I'll always have a soft spot for Goldrunner even though it's not great as it came free with my Amiga. I am the only person who thought Xenon 2 was utter $hite?
-
Also noone mentioned "Phobia", a giant branching network of horizontal scrolling rock-hard shootemup with levels based on different phobias.
-
Mega Typhoon, AFAIK the only game on Amiga using 50Hz sprites:
Lots of Amiga games have 50hz sprites.
-
Thanks for all the idea's everyone!
Well, Phobia and Black Hornet are on my list now... I haven't played it, but the graphics of Black Hornet look pretty awesome!
Funny thing is, I ended up getting a full tricked-out Sega Genesis/32X/CD system, just to play oddball Japanese shoot 'em up games, only to find some GREAT ones on the Amiga....
Oh, no one mentioned Apidya???
For shame! :roflmao:

+1
-
Apidya is a fantastic Nemesis/Gradius-style shooter (with insects :D)
-
Cybernetix is an awesome sideways scrolling seu game. A bit like defender without any landscapes or people - just ships. The graphics, music and gameplay are all very very professional.
-
You might also like Datastorm then.
-
Hey great suggestions everyone!
I just got Phobia, and am enjoying it much!
ANd I have been playing Cybernetix for a Loong time... tho, I had to wait for a WHDLoad slave to play it reliably on my '060 A1200, lol

I tried to run this in just about every combination of OCS/ECS 512kb to 2mb 512kb chip to 1mb chip KS1.3 and KS2.0
Guess what? Neither of the two ADFs in the Tosec work, even the trainer doesn't appear on screen on one version :(
