I had the pleasure of meeting him once at a user group meeting in Riverside, California when he was promoting Brilliance, or True Brillance.  I think he did most of his early artwork on the Amiga with DPaint and would guess that he was what you might refer to as a pixel artist, but he probably used all methods in creating his artwork.

He ran a short animation for us from floppy disk (loaded to RAM I am sure) that combined video capture and pixel art.  It was of him and a crow that flew in a window.  I wish I could find that floppy disk again and find out if it is still readable.

art back then was drawn in outline forst  then filled in with solid colors or graident when possible and renderd pixel by pixel. That was part of the craft of it all. Use 16 colos or less to get a gradient. Sachs was the best. But if you have a CD32 or Winuae get a copy of Leander. It has some of the best Pixel art ever. The artist that did that art has done many games for the Gameboy Advance where pixel art was used quite a bit.

There was a big article in Retro Gamer some issue ago, where Jim Sachs among other artists on the Amiga told how they used to paint on the Amiga. As far as I remember he painted from scratch in DPaint, and later on he used Brilliance.
