My A1200HD has (i bought it like that) an IDE cable coming out of the side close to the PCMCIA slot. It is a standard size that fits any normal IDE CD-ROM or 3.5" hard drive.
The cable has 2 connectors like any standard ide cable.
It is part of the hard drive cable connected to the IDE and the internal hard drive.
The internal hard drive is currently the stock 170Mb one that came with the Amiga.
I have tried to connect a CD-ROM drive and hard drives to this cable but no luck.
What do i need to do to get it to work? As in which connector should i use? Should i set as Slave or Master or CS. (I have tried these combinations)
Is there anything i need to set in the software?
Using Workbench 3.1

You can have only two devices on the IDE cable, not three. If the internal HDD is set to master, the external device needs to be slave and vice versa. Cable select does not work. CD drives are only recognised with extra software like IDEfix. 3.5" devices need a seperate power supply, they don't get power through the IDE cable like 2.5" devices do.

I would imagine the internal hard drive is set to master or else it wouldnt work on its own.
I have a separate power supply for the ide devices and also have idefix installed.
Will have another go and post results.

Ok, used a different cdrom drive.
Now the Amiga boots but:
[A] While loading Workbench it says: "cannot open device scsi.device unit 5"
then it says: Intution is attempting to reset the worbench screen. Please close all windows except drawers.
I cancel these and use find device from idefix97 and it finds the cdrom drive so i select use
But the cdrom drive is not seen on the workbench screen even with a cdrom inserted

Check Devs/DosDrivers/CD0. It says somewhere Unit=5. Change this to Unit=1. Or install IDEfix again, it creates a proper CD0 automatically.
FindDevice only lists the devices, it does not change anything on the installation. You have to change this manually (as I said, change unit=5 to unit=1).

Thanks Thomas that worked :)
