Because there are people willing to pay that price? If there would be no demand, prices would drop. Since prices aren't dropping, there is most likely enough demand. And if you find the price to be to high for you personally, well, the easy solution would be to not buy it. :-)

No doubt, I've seen some go for over $200, I crap you not!

Tis a shame too. I saw an external at the local thrift store a few days back. It was selling for $2.00, but I didn't need it at the time. Now that I need it, it is gone. Bummer! :/
