Title: FA: BeBox Dual 133MHz Computer
Post by: amigasociety on October 25, 2011, 01:02:03 AM
Selling my BeBox so I can buy more Amiga goods.

BeBox are rare, only about 800 dual 133MHz models sold, so hardly ever come up for sale.

Here is the link.

I have an old dual pentium II 200mhz running beos, but I guess thats not quite as cool as an original bebox.

Price is pretty high if you ask me, I don't think there is much demand, but what do I know.

I ran BeOS 4.5 on a old 233MMX. It was a great OS but had no software ecosystem. I remember not being able to find a usable IRC client.

I remember paying like $100 for 4.5 then they turned around and released the next version for free :/

Yes, you are correct, you don't know.  :hammer:

Last one I sold was $2K shipped, dual 66MHz models sell for $800 to $1000 range.  Few months ago a pre shipping model sold for $6K.

Of course like anything else, sometimes they sell, other times they do not.

So far from the 4 I have owned since mid 90s, all sold first sale around and did not have to keep relisting.

I figure if she does not sell, no big deal as I still dig it.  :afro:

As I always say.  It's worth whatever you can get for it.

To be clear, I think hell yes get as much as you can get for it. It IS quite a piece of computer history, and I'd sure like to have one, but couldn't afford it at that price myself. My OLD dual processor 200mhz self made bebox works great....

There is definitely a much bigger cool factor it being made by be, and isn't it powerpc not intel? I think as I recall they first tried the hardware/software route but gave up on that and decided to make it run on intel boxes after that. What about apps you need beos powerpc apps to run on this don't you?

I ALWAYS loved beos, but I really hated the gui. Its ridiculous ugly and can't be changed. I hope haiku becomes skinnable with different window borders and stuff like that. It would be alot more attractive to use if you could change its looks and interface a bit.

Good luck with your sale. I hope you get what your asking for it and more...
I watched your video, nice, I really love the leds in the front of the case, thats really awesome.

Yup, PPC CPU, two of them, both 133MHz.  So yes, you would need to use PPC based BeOS apps.

Actually, there was an AmigaOS theme as an Ester Egg in version PE5... I used it and it was good :)

I hope I still have PE5 around somewhere...

I thought that was just one of the standard BeOS themes in 4.5.

Anyway Jean-Louis Gassee even had a vehicle license plate - AMIGA96

Given Jean-Louis was in charge of the Mac division of Apple after Steve Jobs was kicked out, why didn't he buy it (the Amiga) from Commodore? :-/

I don't know, but in the absence of evidence, I'll go with blaming Sculley.

What would Commodore be left to sell then? Dust off the C= 65?

While the Amiga had a revolutionary OS and hardware in 86, by the early to mid 90s all you really had was the concept. Its not like Apple would put a totally incompatible 68K machine (with AGA and yet another OS that lacked proper memory protection) on the market.

Did not sell in auction but I now have a pending sale for the BeBox so she may be moving to UK soon.  tj
