Title: A500 accelerators on cdtv possible?
Post by: DaNi on January 06, 2004, 06:00:28 PM
Hi! i have a dude about this... i see on ebay mtech 030 & derringer 030 accelerators for amiga 500, works by cpu slot (on 68000 slot) and my question is... work this on a cdtv? i think works but the cdtv have a connector cables near of the 68000 cpu, i dont know if can add with full space.

Very thanks

I would not try it, the h/w is quite different to the A500

I don't know anything about this, but...

From Big Book of Amiga Hardware (Danish Mirror) (http://hardware.amigaserver.net/):

Quote
CDTV Accelerators

Many of the A500 accelerators which use the 68000 socket, may be compatible with the CDTV providing they physically fit.

There is only one CDTV accelerator listed however.

Turbo CD (http://62.61.141.127/~ian/turbocd.html)

As I said at the start, I know nothing about this at all :-)

I've read at the Big Book of Amiga Hardware that a lot of CPU socket accelerators for the 500/1000/2000 tend to be electronically compatible. The same probably holds for the CDTV, but you probably won't be able to seal up the case afterwards, provided you can mount the accelerator in the first place. Overheating might be another issue.

For a minor boost, you could drop in a faster 68000 (14 or 20MHz) or an 010. I'm almost certain that would work.

Ive heard that they should fit, space is the only problem they are mostly the same hardware wise. :-?

@Matt_H
A faster 68k won't do any good aslong as you have no way of clocking it seperatly
from the rest of the system. Just clocking it faster (there where "turbos" of this
kind) won't do much good unless you have some RAM clocked in sync with the CPU.

A 68010 will bring about 10%, and allmost as much incompability-troubles with
games as an full 68020, only with the difference that there no way to turn it off.

A500-accels should work, and if they don't it's probraly only due to wrong timings
(this more of a problem when running those in an A1000 or A2000A), physical
damage should be very unlikely, aslong as you check wether it really fits. Could be
that some CDTV-chips/componets may make unwanted contact with the accel.

You could try to fiddle another socket between board and accel...
good luck with closing the case after that  :-o

They will work fine as long as your CDTV doesnt have a soldered on 68000. The problem is the space for the accelerator. Most will not fit without a riser of some sort, and then if its to long the card will have timming issues and cause the system to crash.

As people have said, fitting will be an issue, although they should be compatible.  Also, you need to worry about compatibility.  I know my MTEC/020 was incompatible with my A570, although I could toggle it off.  So I'd guess it wouldn't work with a real CDTV either.

I mean, some CDTV titles are incompatible with an A570 and vice versa considering a CDTV with floppy. Putting in h/w for the A500 I consider as very tricky.
