Has anyone SUCCESSFULLY connected a CF drive as a master, and a CD/DVD drive as slave on a standard A1200 IDE bus, and been able to use them WITHOUT the use of some kind of 4 port adaptor? If so, HOW?
I swear I did this a couple of years back (if my memory serves me right :D), but regardless of what I have tried over the last couple of days, using all kinds of combinations of hardware/software I'll be buggered if I can get it to work.

I have a Dataflyer CD-XDS, which basically is a External CD case with a IDE ribbon cable.
So, it can be done.
Personally, I have the 4 way IDE adapter in my A1200 with slim CDROM installed inside.
Some CF adapters come with Master/Slave jumpers, so do not, maybe that the problem?
What problem do you have?

I did this on a 4000 a few months ago (Sandisk CF, HP CD burner, IDEfix97), then a month later it stopped working and no matter what I do I can't get it to work! Sorry for being such a downer :-(.

Check:
* Master, Slave, Cable select (CS)
* Transfer mode: PIO, WDMA, UDMA and especially if all components agree correctly on what mode to use. Some CD-ROMs lie about their DMA capabilities.
* Power supply is enough for all peak demands?

of course it works on the A1200...never tried using a cf flash adapter but works using a common hardisk as master and a cdrom as slave
a common adapter 2.5 to 3.5 do the job perfect...for the cd software use idefix

Hi ,what would be the outcome if one of the 4 way buffered IDE adapters was starting to break down ,

I think the purpose of the buffered interface is so you can have longer cables. Without that it will be unreliable if it works at all.

Hi,
I worked on this for about 3 months, I have a 4 way ide buffered, and never could get the CF drive to work with the ide drive on my A1200. I tried putting it on as a master, slave, on the primary cable, on the secondary cable. It works fine by itself but if you ad a CD drive, nothing.
Sorry to give you this news, but if someone out there REALLY has it working on their computer. Let us know how you did it.

I really mean REALLY, not I heard.

@smerf and thread
SUCCESS...and it was a lot simpler than all the threads/opinions made it out to be! This is the combo...
Hardware:
* Standard A1200 IDE controller (*NO* 4 x IDE adaptor)
* 8g transcend CF card in a single CF card adaptor connected to the header on the cable closest to the IDE controller. Partitioned to 3gig ONLY on first part of CF card. Jumper set to "slave/master" not "master/slave".
* 2.5" cable to 3.5" x 2
* Slim CD model CR-176-B with 3.5" convertor connected to the header on the cable furthest from the IDE controller. Pin
* A500 power supply with CF power + CD power + floppy power all off floppy power header
Software:
It's not PROPERLY setup yet (hardware/software wise) but it IS working. Booted "without startup-sequence" and ran setpatch. Booted "without startup-sequence" again.
I'm running Kickstart 3.1

Partitioned to 3gig ONLY on first part of CF card (success gone once there was more partitions used). Jumper set to "slave/master" and not "master/slave". (Will go to a 2/4g SanDisk for reasons too long to explain here).
* 2.5" to 3.5" x 2 cable
* Slim CD model CR-176-B with 3.5" convertor connected to the header on the cable furthest from the IDE controller. Pin 28 removed on adaptor (maybe not necessary).
* A500 power supply with CF power + CD power + floppy power all off floppy power header
* Kickstart 3.1 (necessary?)
Booted "without startup-sequence" and ran setpatch. Booted "without startup-sequence" again. Using a mountlist and all the CacheCDFS bits I previously had on a disk from stuffing around last time, I mounted CD0:....voila! Works. CF accessible, and CD accessible. Admittedly, it's not PROPERLY setup yet, but it IS working, recognising CD's, allowing access to them and so on - CONSISTENTLY and RELIABLY. I did *NOT* use IDEFIX or similar software.
Even had it working with/without a Blizzard 060 card connected but NOT "software installed", and also a 80g HD as the slave instead of the CF card.
If you need more details smerf just ask! It was a very frustrating process getting this far, so if I can help I will!
