Title: Sold my Amiga audio stuff on ebay...
Post by: Vlabguy1 on October 01, 2011, 02:28:36 AM
to a gentleman from Brazil.. and just checked my PayPal account..says funds are "Pending"
Im like what?  Funds may not be available for 21days?? Or 3days after confirmed delivery..um what the heck.  That is just great if the new buyer does not confirm when items are delivered.  And I just recently sold a nice dslr +lens in which the funds were available right away.  I don't get it.  I think I am done with Ebay.

I will send the buyer a refund.  I understand protecting the buyer, but don't screw the seller.  This leaves the seller with his A-- hangin in da wind.  Sorry for the rant..

So don't send anything until the funds are cleared. Isn't that accepted practice in such a case?

Don't worry rich,he probably just paid with E-check which is funds from his bank. its super slow thru ebay, but it will go thru(its reliable).
It will probabaly take even more time since theres currency conversion also.

no need to worry anyway, theres buyer/seller protection thru paypal.

Damn Rich, you should have taken the items down to him personally, collected the cash and then spent it on hookers in Copacabana!  A missed opportunity.

If the Paypal payment type (check paypal payment on website or check the payment confirmation email in your mail client) is "instant" it is ebay being nobheads, if it is e-cheque then it is just the nature of the payment type.

Another instant way to tell is if the details of the Paypal payment tell you to send the items instantly or if they tell you to wait for this e-cheque to clear.

Sometimes paypal withhold payment until the buyer can confirm the items are working. Happened to me before. I cancelled the transaction and sold it to someone privately.

I wouldn't worry about it Rich. Mech's right. eCheck or bank transfers take that long sometimes. So much for computers and the speed of light. Chance also that the guy scheduled it for a certain date because he doesn't get paid until then. If that's the case, he should have mentioned that though.

It is not all bad news though.  You must use a delivery method that confirms delivery, so you will have a record that he got the items.  That way, even if the person tells PayPal and eBay that he never got them you just show the confirmation and you get your money and he is left with nothing if someone else steals his items from his doorstep and signs the delivery notice for him.

It may seem like a bad situation for you as the seller, but it tries to protect both sides.  If you file a complaint, the buyer will not get his money back until it is settled and all the while eBay & PayPal are making interest off of everyone's money in the bank.  :roflmao:

If they've paid via echeque then paypal recommend not sending until it has cleared and so do I. The payment can still be reversed if the funds dont materialise.

I accidently bounced a payment to someone when my pre-paid credit card allowed a paypal payment to someone without enough funds in the account. A week later the payment was reversed and I'd received the item by then. Made a manual payment of course to make good but as far as the vendor was concerned, they had received an instant payment only to have it reversed a week later.

If the money hasnt cleared, the buyer hasnt made good on his payment yet and it can be reversed so the seller could end up with no payment and no item if he has sent it. Dont send until its cleared. In the case of echeques, Paypal / eBay are quite clear that you are not covered for seller protection until it shows as being cleared.

rubenscarrilho:
What happened to that Commodore Amiga 1200 (NOS) that you bought last year, promised to pay and then when the computer was shipped you backed out? Did it ever arrive?

Edit: 1/22/2012
Ruben never responded to my question and Vlabguy1 later confirmed that the transaction between the two went fine.

Tension is correct.  If you don't sell too often on eBay and you come up with a large sale, you won't get the PayPal funds until the buyer indicates that he as received and is happy with the goods.  I bought a $1200 item from a guy in California and he had to wait for his money until I indicated that the item arrived in good condition.  This should not happen for high volume, high $$ sellers -- nor will it happen for small sales.

In the case of echeques, Paypal / eBay are quite clear that you are not covered for seller protection until it shows as being cleared.

I had a dispute with one buyer and PayPal actually was able to take the money back from my bank account without my consent when the dispute was opened by the buyer.  He had my items and PayPal had my money after the money had cleared and been put into my checking account.  I was very PI$$ED OFF, but when you create an eBay account and PayPal account, you had better read the fine print about what they can do to you and your linked bank account when a dispute is filed against you.

It was all caused because of the rough treatment the box received by the US Postal Service, and I ended up having to pay.  Seller beware!  Pack everything like it is going to be handled by a gorilla, instead of a person.

I asked the buyer to just return everything and I would refund his purchase price, but he would not agree to returning the items, which made me very suspicious, so I will no longer do any business with him.

Edit:  If it had been for less money, I would have fought the dispute, but it was $600 that I needed at the time that they had removed from my bank account.  The seller did not want to pay for insurance, something I won't let happen again.
