Title: Water in PC Floppy Drive...
Post by: Super TWiT on September 26, 2011, 12:43:07 PM
Alright everyone, I ended up getting some water in my pc (not amiga) floppy drive.  I noticed when I ejected a disk there was water drops on the bottom of the metal flap.  What I think happened is that I had a water-ring from a soda on my desk, and the floppy disk accidentally got in it.  I powered down the computer and removed the diskette drive.  After opening the drive, I don't see any water in there.  I am planning on letting it air out for a few days.  However, how can I be sure the water is gone?  Can I use a hair dryer? I know this seems like a lot of bother over a pc floppy drive, but it is a drive with a custom eject mechanism to work with my optiplex case (and I still use floppies for a few things...:))

Just water? No icky stuff like the soda pop itself? You should be fine just letting it airdry for a day or so. Remove it and hang it above a central heating radiator if you want to be positively sure.

Try to insert the drive in rice, I read that the rice absorbs the moisture, but the problem is the oxide in some mechanical parts, if you apply heat in the drive some parts for example plastic and the headers that are plastic will can suffer damages. When the moisture will disappear you don't forget to lubricate the mechanical parts, oil and fat without graphite, also you don't forget the electric part as the motor and some circuited that could suffer damage, but never give heat. And other option to rice is some product that absorbs the moisture as the little bags that are in some products, but as with the rice you must clean the parts with air and brush to quit the rice, etc. and after to lubricate with care.
