Title: A few pc-task questions
Post by: fishy_fiz on September 24, 2011, 07:34:23 AM
Can anyone tell me please how to mount a cdrom inside pc-task. Both for use with DOS, and to be able to set cdrom as boot device (I assume this requires use of an external bios?).
I have no floppy drive, so installing software has been a little bit tedious.

Im also curious if anyone can tell me if there's likely to be much incompatibility with later dos games when using ms-dos4? There's been quite a bit of software that doesnt work that Im sure I used to use last I played with pc-task (which was some years ago). I had a hardfile with msdos6.22 on it back then though.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Mate,

Have you installed the cdrom driver in CONFIG.SYS and have MSCDEX.EXE running in the AUTOEXEC.BAT?

Cheers,
ck

boot from cdrom on pctask is impossible
and mount a cdrom sincerely I don't know
on PCX there is an easy way to mount a cdrom.....if you need install something with cd use pcx ...
hardfiles are compatibles in both emulators...so you know
on the other way most dos games will work with msdos v4...maybe later games from 1995 and later requires 6.22

Some games do require DOS 5 or higher but I don't recall ever seeing any that specifically required DOS 6.

I'd advise against using DOS 4 as it had some nasty bugs in it that could cause data corruption; it was pretty notorious in its day.

I'd suggest either sticking with 3.3, or if you need FAT partitions >32MB use DOS 5 or newer. (Compaq DOS 3.31 also supported these size partitions if you can track it down).

You may also want to give FreeDOS a try, I haven't run into any problems with that.

Ive made some progress. I installed pctcdrom.sys and have it mounting when dos starts up, but trying to use the cd-drive just gives me the message, "cdrom not high sierra or iso-9660 format".
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'd go the FreeDOS route if I were you mate.

The problem with that though is that I cant install freedos without a cdrom being mounted.

To make things a little trickier again I have no floppy drive.

Use these floppy images to install an older version of FreeDOS, then once it' installed you can mount the ISO image of the latest verion and install it from that. :)
