Title: "start menu" for amiga?
Post by: runequester on September 14, 2011, 05:17:54 AM
Are there any app's that you can recommend for adding some application launchers to the workbench menu or similar?

I already have a dock for the most used stuff, but it'd be nice to have an alternative.

AmiStart like already mentioned must be the best Windows-like startprogram. Depending on your AOS version you can use good old TooldDaemon to add programs to menues. There was a replacement or two released for later versions of AOS but I can't remember the name.

I used StartMenu (http://aminet.net/package/util/wb/StartMenu2) many years back, until I switched it to ToolsDaemon (http://aminet.net/search?query=toolsdaemon).

@HotRod:

You are probably thinking of THE, which is built into OS3.9 Boing Bag #4.

Ive alwys liked Amistart, which is hugely configurable. Can be used as a dock, or a taskbar, or a combination of the two. I also like how you can have sub-docks (ie, extra dock items that run off of a single dock "entry"). You can also set some nice eye candy effects with it (transparencies and so on). The main two problems with it though is that it can be quite heavy on resources, and its a pain to initially get running (although once you get a working config, its easy to edit it with simple drop and drag, menus, and so on).

WB2000 is also quite nice, but like Amistart, a pain to initially get working.

Sure ToolsDaemon is an old but sweet and simple option!
The most powerfull one I've ever encountered though was Toolmanager3.
It was a hassle to configure, but well worth the effort.
With this you could create text or graphical docks and menus, startbuttons etc...
You could even select a file on the Workbench, then using TM3 to launch an application which parsed and sent the selected file to the program you started.
It's on aminet and uses MUI.
