Read all about it (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-14899507)

They didn't get a big cash injection, just asked for one.
-
"Sudent asks politician for money".
Nothing new there and we all know what the answer is going to be. :D
-
The answer will be "Da! Ve Vill make you an offer you can't refuse!"

Interesting, here's hoping they get it. I've been waiting for ReactOS to be a usable alternative for years now, I'd really like to see it come to fruition.
(Should be really interesting if the PM decides to take them up on it - seems like Europe has a more active interest in software politics than the US, and Russia's general "screw you, we do what we want" attitude would be pretty hilarious to see pitted against Microsoft if it came to that.)

LOL. And then they'll steal the code, shoot the developers and sell it as "USSR Workbench 1.0" with some "boing ball" wallpaper.

I wonder how compatible ReactOS is with Windows software. The article makes it sound like anything will run. Is it any more compatible then Wine?.

I have not tried it, but from reading on wiki and their site, not a lot runs on it.
Wine is much more compatible from what I can tell.
But then again they have different aims
-
The article kind of over-sells it - ReactOS is still in alpha stage (though it looks to be awfully functional for an alpha, I think that might be a "no guarantees" on the part of the developers.)
As for compatibility...given that they're straight-up reimplementing the whole operating system, rather than trying to adapt the API to an entirely different OS, I'd think that if it ever gets to a finished state it'll actually surpass Wine. But as far as where it is now, I don't know. (Though they've got Flash working, (http://www.reactos.org/media/screenshots//2009/ros_039_flash_in_firefox.png) and I gather that that's one of the less well-coded pieces of commercially-supported software out there.)

Well, I may go to Berlusconi's mansion and ask him for money to fund AROS. But I basically have two problems: 1) I am not a girl. 2) I am not teenage. There are no chances. ;-)
About ReactOS, I'm trying it from time to time: it's interesting, but today M68K AROS binary compatibility to AmigaOS 3.x is much more advanced than ReactOS binary compatibility with x86 Windows software, to do a cross-platform comparison. It doesn't run anything interesting without issues, and it would really need so much funding and a crew of all-dedicated developers to remove at least the bigger problems in time. Don't forget, also, that Windows is a moving target: API and ABI are well defined, but they evolve at every new version.
-
ReactOS is something I've been watching closely for ages. Shows a lot of promise, but it's VERY far from being a replacement for the real MS Windows if you just expect "things to work". Even as a MS certified engineer, I'd love nothing more than to get away from the constant buying new copies for new machines/buying new Win versions for existing machines cycle.
As with most projects of this nature, I fear by the time they get it to a commonly usable point, no one will even remember what "Windows XP" is, and ReactOS strives to be a replacement for XP/2003. Windows 8 Developer Preview was released for download yesterday, after all - but it's still a ways off RTM format.
(The OP's thread is a bit misleading, albeit well intended. The ReactOS team didn't get funding, but a student/developer merely asked for financial support from Medvedev during his visit.)

Well, you could always consider an operation. Now that would be dedication! ;) Or if you're not THAT dedicated, send a young teenage girl over there and then use the blackmail money to fund AROS. ;) ;) I mean, after all, Terminills uses meth to fund AROS (or is it the other way around?) so why not this? :D
@ Darrin LOL. And then they'll steal the code, shoot the developers and sell it as "USSR Workbench 1.0" with some "boing ball" wallpaper.
See! Commodore USA isn't as bad as you think they are! They haven't shot anyone... yet...

I have to admit in seeing the headline and that it was about ReactOS (Something I have read about in the past) and posting it without reading it. I alo misread the headline as "to fund" rather than "asked to fund" my bad.

This article is incredibly biased. In truth, reactos is worlds behind wine and linux. It paints a nice picture of a future possibility but its just that... Its not in any way anyhow ready to be a drop in replacement for windows.
(Which is its future intended use)
Its a nice idea, an ideal that is much harder to make real than most people imagine. M$ has thousands, no tens of thousands of developers. Reactos has just a very few really active developers.
Last I tried it the gui is severely lacking in even the most basic functions. The gui didn't even have moveable icons last I checked. This most basic feature is only planned for 1.0. Its a hobby OS. Look I'm running doom for windows without windows. A nice idea but functionally, its not quite ready for anyone but future developers.
On the hobby front, nice hack but if its 10+ years behind current windows, its not much good to anyone but real nerds.
A big part of me hopes they succeed though. I think it would be awesome if they did. Imagine a big undergound of windows users ****ing the man. Yeah thats the good part of the concept. Hope it works...

I don't bealive that with a money injection they get that ReactOS runs someday in PCs, because this "alternative" OS needs the Microsoft routines, for example for DirectX the big problem that ReactOS has for run games, and for run programs too, it needs the APIs and DLLs that the copyrights are of Microsoft, ReactOS is more fantasy than reality, is more reality the Amiga OS.
-
Not really, the whole point is to reimplement the API to spec anyway. DirectX isn't voodoo, it's just a wrapper layer to provide access to common functionality on multimedia hardware, and the way it's supposed to work is already documented, because otherwise nobody could write programs for it. As long as ReactOS's version takes the same inputs and gives the same output, software isn't going to know the difference.

if some do-gooder had a million $ (or better £) to spend, then they should spend it on getting an actual useable GUI for Linux instead of the current crap...

PS: *nix makes a damn good server.. but a very weak desktop
-
I think linux makes a damn good desktop if you tweak it for your needs. I run xfce and the whole box is tweaked for speed. Yes out of the box, most linux distros are slow because of kde or other more bloated interfaces.
