Title: More money then sense?
Post by: mbob on September 13, 2011, 01:14:41 AM
I just picked this up:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/180723532832

I didn't really need it but always wanted one.  I hope the accellerator is worth the extra $$ over buying one refurb from amikit.

For a nice condition machine, with all the stuff included, I don't think its bad at all.

I guess if you compare to buying a new pc its expensive for what you get but to hell with that.

Aren't there heat issues with 040s in the wedge case or is that exaggerated?

Yeah, compared to some of the prices I've seen people pay for Amiga gear, that's almost sane.

I think that's a pretty good deal.

Post it on eBay.  I bet you'll have several people who will bid on it.

I was planning on trying to find a $450 price range 4000 but opted for this because of the condition. He sent me pics that pushed me over. I just uploaded em:

An Amikit refurb speced around $300ish plus shipping to me so on the surface I paid $100 for the accelerator if all checks out. At least that was my rationalization.

The accelerator is totally worth it :) I'm stuck in 030 land :)

Hope you have a little more money. This part is untrue:

"Also comes with Commodor vga adapter so you can plug in any LCD monitor (which you can see here)"

Most monitors won't do 15Khz which rules out most games.

You also may want to get a clockport Subway USB. That is the best thing I bought for my A1200.

Welcome to the A1200!

Oh, its a real Commodore too... nice...

I think the commodore ones don't have the video bugs in multiscan mode like mine that was NOS.

Yeah I'm crossing my fingers on one of my 4 LCDs works.  My first add-on I'm thinking is a PCMCIA network card at amikit. I think it's around $36. Would tracking down a subway USB make more sense?  Oh and depending on the hard drive life one of those IDE to CF adaptors.

I have the wireless network card from amigakit and it really has worked well for me with miamiDX.

I have never tried the networking over USB, but I don't believe there are any wireless adapters. Just wired.

Subway is good, but it still runs off a port designed for a clock. So I think for best results you probably want both. I'm sure PCMCIA is less CPU overhead. Subway does bog down the system.  IDE to CF is nice too :)

I went with a SSD but its actually slower than CF so I should switch back.

That ain't too bad of a score considering condition and installed '040.

Recently let an A1200/Apollo'040/32mg/scsi header go for a price comparable to that amount.

I have wireless internet on my 1200. It was a royal bitch to set up, but that may just be my incompetence :)

Its fun to have though. CF adapter is great too, both IDE and PCMCIA

Dang.
I'm stuck with "wired" ethernet..
That is so 2000's..  :(

Although, since my 1200 is about 10 feet away from my router, it's working for me..  ;-)

@mbob - That's a nice machine..  Happy with my 030 1200, but a 40 is REALLY NICE....
Good pickup..

I actually prefer wired ethernet.  It's more secure, perhaps more reliable (though wifi connections are pretty decent these days), potentially much faster, and you're subjecting your body to radiation in order to get it.

wifi connections are good for true mobile devices like smartphones and netbooks etc.  The only other advantage to them is that they're convenient in terms of not having to wire your rooms with Cat5.

I received it today and am having some trouble. It doesn't boot some times and i have had power cut off. I suspect hard drive issues may be possibly causing it at times and something else which caused it to drop power all together. A few times I thought it was dead for sure but a few minutes later with a retry and it would work.

I have an IDE to compact flash adaptor coming Saturday to cure any possible issues with the hard drive but I will have to continue troubleshooting what else is wrong. Possibly an a500 power supply is needed with that 040 card. I read they have more juice. It's certainly more touchy then I expected even though the case is immaculate.

I ran an apollo 1240 until I converted it to an 68060.  I found the standard A1200 power supply wasn't enough for the A1200, 1240 and hard drive.  No problems with the A500 power supply though.

The power supply may very well be the culprit. The A1200 power supply isn't really up to snuff, except for a pretty basic system with very little expansion. An A500 supply will work a bit better. Amigakit sells some solid ones as well.

Cool so others agree I'm on the right track. Thanks for the reply. I looked on amigakit last night and couldn't find an american version of the A500 PS except for one that is for case conversion. http://amigakit.leamancomputing.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=866 ,  I'm still hunting.

Oh and I emailed the original owner and he suspects the 040 board as well. He told me to reseat it but I am almost certain it's power.

I actually use the case conversion one. Its ugly sitting on the desk but it works flawlessly.
