Title: A1200 composite output?
Post by: runequester on September 08, 2011, 07:16:53 PM
I might have a deal for a dirt cheap monitor with a composite input. Question is.. would I get colour or greyscale from the A1200 through composite?

I've tried hooking it up to a TV and only received grey, but this was a PAL machine to an NTSC tv.

Anyone tried this with a computer monitor?

Ugh.. that was supposed to read composite. Can't edit the title

I think it will depend on the monitor. I had colour on a NTSC A1200 in PAL mode connected to a Commodore monitor. Any chance you can try it first?

Theres probably a few exceptions, but Id imagine most likely it'll be color. As for the title of the thread, did you also notice you went half/half later in your post ? :)  (componsite)

You can edit the the title in advanced mode. ;)

BTW: Composite sucks - it's good enough for games but a pain for serious stuff.

ah thanks :)

and yes, it does suck.
Right now though, Im stuck with VGA. Which works great for workbench and like 7 games ;)

Got some options for a better solution but Im terminally broke right now

Doom, heretic, quake, Simcity, simcity2000, napalm, onescapee, genetic species, dynamite, gloom3, earth2140, trapped, trapped2, payback, descent, descent2, freespace, nightlong, scummvm, shadow of the 3rd moon, F1 virtual gp, exodus and a bunch of others should hopefully keep you entertained for a while if youre restricted to system friendly software for the moment. Im not sure many people realise just how many games can used @31-ish khz, either via mode promotion, or just through a games inbuilt screenmode requestors.   :)

Somebody should import some LCD-TVs from europa to USA.

Scart connector is so good way to connect amigas, flicker free and sharp image.

Gloom worked but kinda crap.
EDIT: Not that Gloom is crap, its awesome, it just ran worse than in normal PAL mode for some reason.

I couldn't get Genetic Species or Trapped to play nice for some reason. I'll have to mess with it more. I could waste some hours on those two alone.

Yeah, unfortunately they will be slowet. Probably little more than 1/2 "normal" speed. Sucks a bit I guess considering a lot of the better games will be 3d.
I think genetic species needs the updates to work in non pal/ntsc modes too by the way.

Soliton is a pretty darn good version of solitare if you get desperate :)

If you're running on the native chipset, VGA modes are slower than PAL/NTSC modes due to the increased bandwidth they require, and so graphics-intensive games can suffer... I'd guess that's the issue with Gloom. There must be a market for importing cheap LCD TVs with SCART cables into the States though - AmigaKit? :)

For most of them so far, its been okay actually. Gloom was the only one that was noticeably worse. Nemac IV runs like a charm, but maybe that one just plays nice.

THanks for the suggestions btw people

edit: Tried the update and I can't get Genetic Species to work in VGA mode. Any suggestions? No graphics card here.
Trapped works for the main menu, but doesn't work when you get into the game itself

As composite is usually either NTSC or PAL, my money would be that the composite output of the PAL A1200 will show as monochrome on an NTSC composite monitor...  :(
You're talking displaying NTSC from your PAL 1200 to the NTSC monitor?
If you're trying to output PAL screens from your PAL 1200 to the NTSC monitor, I'd be surprised if you get a picture even...

You never know tho..

yeah, PAL 1200. Hm, doesn't sound too good then.

okay, can't get Shadow of the third moon to work without a CD. I'll mess with it more tomorrow.

On the upside, Onescapee looks amazing. Stunning intro.
