Title: Problem with USB mouse
Post by: ZeeRuX on September 05, 2011, 12:26:45 PM
Hi there. I bought a usb-adapter from ebay:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Amiga-USB-mouse-adapter-Brand-new-/110735562060?pt=UK_VintageComputing_RL&hash=item19c85a954c

and it says it works with most mouses. I tried with 2 different usb-mouses, one wireless and one with wire.. Noone worked.. The user on ebay told me that his mouse would work and I bought that:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120769191065&ssPageName=ADME:L:OC:US:1123

Guess what? Didnt work **** either...

Im running ClassicWB and wondering if I need to do anything to get usb-mouses to work? According to the ebay-guy the mouse-adapter-thing will work even on bootup so there wouldnt be nessasary with any drivers.

Anyone knows anything about this? Thx... (and yes, I know there is this micromys-thing but I will try this first since I already bought it)

Thx!

While I don't know any details about this specific adaptor....
The description does say "PS/2-protocol" which most older USB also did (with the provided adaptor). Problem is "noone" is useing PS2-ports these days so more and more vendors remove support for it when they change anything with their mice.

You need to use a ps2-compatible mouse. That adapters are simple ps2 adapters that use a PIC and include the usb to ps2 adapter to make the adapter shorter (or to fool users). There are similar adapters built by someone in spain. Skip them and buy a Micromys

Micromys has the same limitation.......

So basiclly your telling me:

-Micromys is the same thing, doesnt matter then?

-If I fix some ps2 mouse, use a ps2->usb-adapter and plug this in my present adapter, it will work?

Yes, that will probably work, although an adaptor going that way might be rare as the dual protocol mice tend to go the other way.

The issue is that some mice were made to support both protocols - USB and PS/2. This type of mouse, when it powers up first, detects what type of connection it has and then switches to that protocol. It seems that many mice nowadays have dropped that feature and so won't work with that adaptor, even if they appear to be the same model as one which used to work. It's likely that a simple firmware revision in the mouse itself has removed the feature...

Edit: Yes, the Micromys is basically the same thing with a different connector. They both only support the PS/2 protocol.

Yeah, but has scrollwheel, works better with KVMs and doesn't fool the user exposing an usb connector

Both the Micromys (http://amigakit.leamancomputing.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=877) and Cocolino (http://amigakit.leamancomputing.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=88) adapters will work with USB mice that have the PS/2 protocol built-in (assuming you are using a green USB-PS/2 adapter)

you need to get a USB mouse that is sold WITH the USB->PS2 adapter (which you won't use). I would suggest Logitech B120.

So you mean that every USB-mouse that comes with a usb->ps/2 adapter will work?

I have a USB->serial adapter

If that was true, it was completely useless for your purpose, it would even damage your Amiga. The Amiga mouse port is not a serial port. It is an Atari-like game port. No serial hardware would work on this port.

And no, you do not have an USB->Amiga adapter. What people try to tell you is that you bought a fake. It is a PS/2->Amiga adapter with an USB connector soldered to the PS/2 end.

So what you need is an USB mouse which can also be used on a PS/2 port. Most of these mice come with a small green adapter. You just replace that green adapter by your Amiga adapter. You don't need that green adapter, but if the mouse came with such an adapter, it is an indication that the mouse would work on your Amiga adapter.

Pure USB mice won't work. You need a mouse which can "understand" PS/2.

Either im stupid or you dont read what im talking about..

I have a USB->serial adapter and I have tried several usb-mices... My question was if I can get a PS/2 mouse with a ps/2 ->usb adapter ...

What in the hell will I need a usb -> ps/2 adapter for?? lol

Not every USB mouse is capable of supporting legacy PS2 interface.

You don't need the adapter, you need a mouse that is COMPATIBLE with that adapter. One way to insure that the mouse is compatible with the PS2 protocol is to simply buy one that comes with the adapter. Also, whoever made this adapter probably tested it with name brand mouse like Logitech or Microsoft.

I have this same mouse which I use with my Minimig, so I know that one will most likely work, and its a nice mouse for the money.

Anyway, you can continue to plug every USB china mouse into your ebay brand mouse adapter and your vintage Amiga with the hopes of finding one that is compatible, but keep in mind that you may also damage the adapter and/or the Amiga. I hope your Amiga is a model with replaceable CIAs...

If you know what you are getting into I don't see a problem with this adapter....

Like you said, the amiga->ps2  adapter + the usb->ps2 adapter does get rather cumbersome.
