Title: Gutenprint for amiga
Post by: José Manuel on August 27, 2011, 01:31:04 PM
Its possible port this printer program to amiga?
http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/

It would probably be easier to just update the existing Amiga printer subsystem.  Printing has always been the Amiga's Achilles heel.

why? turboprint with ghostscript works pretty well and you can print to nearly any postscript supporting  printer with netprinter.device.Using a network printer pretty much free's you up from the driver problem since you are using postscript. i use a xerox phaser 6130N color laser on a pretty regular basis.

If anything printing from browsers could use help ;/

i know turboprint is a very good option but the problem is for printers not supporting PS
I have a Epson R1800 and not PS supported.
Other and better way is contact with turboprint developers and asking for new versions or new printer drivers(in turboprint linux versions lot of modern printer drivers) i think now the amiga world have important market with classic systems and NG systems ,amigaos 3.9,morphos,Amigaos 4.1.x, usb 2.0 cards for classics.......

TurboPrint for the Amiga hasn't been updated in years. But I agree with Mech, printing across my network (you can't use AmiTCP) to my PS printer give the best output and HP inkjets (even new ones) are still supported by the Amiga. Final Writer and PageStream give the best looking documents. It is also easy to change printers with the click of an Icon that runs a short script changing ENV parameters.

As far as the GIMP-print goes, it would likely run under OS4.1 on a NG Amiga; Classics just don't have the chutzpah to get those programs to really run

gimp-print is not gimp.  it was originally designed as high quality drivers for gimp and eventually moved to being a stand alone driver subsystem.

Gutenprint (Gimp-print) would be awesome on the Amiga.

I recently was looking into setting up my printer (HP OfficeJet 8500A Pro) on my Amiga and couldn't figure out what driver I needed, unfortunately it doesn't support PCL5 or PCL6, instead it says it supports PCL3 Enhanced, which I've never even heard of.

But then I got distracted by other things...

Any clue on what driver I could use for an OfficeJet?

that requires hplip which is also an ijs driver package.

Yes, I understand that, but the Open Source (GPL) type of software runs in Linux and without the PPC of the NG Amigas one would have a hard time in converting it without AmiCygnix.  But feel free to go ahead and do so, I'll look forward to your efforts.

Why would printer drivers require an X Server?

Ah, I see.  You were referring to GhostScript as running on the Amiga which it has been for years and is part of TurboPrint.  As I understood it, Gimp-print was different than GS.

Actually it's an add on to ghostscript.  Gutenprint is running as an ijs server in that pic.  however the current version of ghostsript's built in ijs client is b0rked.   So I need to fix it and once that's done it's a 100% working gutenprint port.

As of right now you can use the sample ijs client I included and print any pnm file to gutenprint(gimp-print) supported printers if you want to mess with the few 100 or so diff options in the command line. :P

Doesn't do a ton yet but after some work I've removed the ijs requirements. :)

i think terminills is working along his priorities and it seems currently that he concentrates on supporting wanderer upgrade apparently to get arix and likely aros an adequate and native gui frontend.
http://aros-exec.org/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=8687&forum=7&post_id=87557#forumpost87557

multiplatform projects like this one might have been put on hold as result of certain incidents of late, but honestly i dont know it myself for sure and i think gutenprint will be eventually resumed. the question is when.

Pretty much... And yes Gutenprint is still on my list and will be completed.    Besides I need it for Arix also. :)

And we need it too for AROS/AEROS/OS4/MOS ... :-) Sadly its one man task, so be good and live up the great mission, o Hercules! :-) So I will not have to :whack: to people saying buy a new colour LaserJet cause it might work

For the record so everyone knows yes I am going to finish the port.  However it is merely a hobby project so I will be doing so as my time allows.

Do it NOW!  Nah, I 'm just messing around.  This is awesome!  Thanks, you rock!  No pressure, it's not like the various Amiga Communities aren't experts at patience and disappointment.

In fact, come to think about it, I think most people that are Amiga fans still would be the last ones to give up all hope in a Zombie Apocalypse.  We already keep trying to feed more life into our beloved platform.

Arix is a cross between AROS and Linux.  It uses parts of both so that Linux features such as multicore will work.  It also uses the AROS ABI so it will run AROS binary programs compiled for the same architecture.
