Hello there
I'm pretty new to this whole amiga business. I have a bit of a hobby collecting and restoring old PC's and things and managed to pick up an Amiga 500, 1200, monitor and other assorted bits and bobs for cheap.
Overall they were in pretty good condition, although full of crud (I've since opened them up and cleaned them all out)
Cammy and Rebel-CD32 were a great help and got me up and running, and suggested I join up... so here I am :)
A quick perusal of these forums suggests there are a lot of star wars and doctor who fans... I think I'll be in good company here :D
Oh and if you're wondering why I have a silly username, it was hilarious when I was first getting on the internet at like 11 or 12 and I haven't bothered to change it. Besides, who doesn't like donuts? :)

Welcome to amiga.org and the world of Amiga computing! I'm sure you will find it fascinating, and the members here helpful!
Regards...

Welcome! Nice amigas.. google Retrobright so you can restore those yellow keys!

G'day mate, good to see you on the forum. Give us a yell any time you need a hand with anything, it shouldn't be a problem to drop by again, and I'd try not to be so late next time. :)
Retr0Bright is a good idea, I've had a bit of experience with using it myself. Be best to wait til this rain is gone though, get some strong Aussie sunlight into them to help reverse the damage it caused in the first place.
Hey, if your mouse buttons give you the ****s you can always use the Alt and Amiga key combination, the left side is the left mouse button, right is right, and holding an Amiga key while using the arrow keys moves the cursor, holding shift as well accelerates it. It's handy if you end up plugging two control pads in for 2-player games and only need to quickly use the mouse to launch a menu to load the next game.
Oh yeah, and we have this "Oz" group here for Australians to join if you wanted: http://www.amiga.org/forums/group.php?do=viewmembers&groupid=11

Hi DonutKing
Welcome to Amigaland... :)
Must be great to be just discovering the Amiga for the first time, not many things in the computer world these days that you can honestly say is exciting or different anymore... :)
There seems to be quite a number of upside down land Amiga users here, do you have some wee store that's still selling them cheap or have they just arrived down under for the first time recently... ;)
With all the sunshine you get, doing the old Retr0Bright treatment should be a breeze, I can highly recommend it myself as it really does work and the difference it makes to an old yellowed Amiga is amazing... :)
Check this thread out for some stuff I gave the Retr0Bright treatment to recently... :)

PS: I thought it was only the yanks who misspelled Doughnuts... ;)

Well I got them off ebay for $50 :D Middle aged lady up the coast was selling them, local pickup only, I was only bidder... she had no idea what they were (originally listed them as commodore 64), said they belonged to her dad who passed away. Guess he won't be needing them any more :D
I've actually used retrobright before, on some of my old PC's. The weather lately hasn't been great for it so I haven't attacked the amigas with it yet.
I did have the keys and cases off them for a cleanout last week, and I left them soaking in a strong solution of oxy-based detergent for a few days which seems to have taken the edge of the yellowing off.

The proper Australian spelling is doughnut. A lot of Australian's don't seem to know that though. :P

Bit late for that lol
I've got more old PC's and game consoles than I can poke a stick at... this is just broadening my horizons a bit :P
I'd love an arcade cabinet but I got nowhere to put it.

Yeah thanks heaps for your help, it was invaluable :) I'd be lost without you guys.
Don't worry about being late either :P As long as you don't get me out of bed its all good

Welcome to the org you will be Amiga Emulated.
:D

Welcome to the Amiga's tribe!

Hmmm, hopefully this is a simple question - seems the character map on my 1200 is wrong?
Trying to type a hash # produces a pound symbol £ instead.
I was a bit baffled as to how I'm meant to use the 'match all' wildcard until I found out that the apostrophe ' prints a hash instead.
....so is there any way to change my keyboard layout?
getting used to using #? instead of *.* is doing my head in

Heya DonutKing, welcome to Amiga.org! :)
Since we installed ClassicWorkbench on that CF card for you, it is probably configured for English Amigas. This is quoted from the ClassicWB website:
ClassicWB defaults to the Great Britain locale and keymap settings. Obviously this is no good if you live elsewhere and your time zone and keyboard layout differs.
In order to change these settings, do the following:
Move the required keymap from the "Storage/Keymaps" to "Devs/Keymaps" drawer
Place the "gb" keymap back into the "Storage/Keymaps" drawer, or it will take up memory
Reboot the Amiga and open up the "Prefs/Input" requester
Select your corresponding keymap and save the setting
Open up the "Prefs/Locale" requester and select your region, again saving the setting
Note that those with an American keyboard layout are able to simply remove the "gb" keymap, placing it back into the "Storage/Keymaps" drawer, leaving the "Devs/Keymaps" drawer empty. The required keymap is built into the ROM as its default setting, so to finish just save the "Prefs/Input" with "American" selected.
You just need to use the American keymap for our Australian Amigas. That should fix you up! For more information check this out: http://classicwb.abime.net/classicweb/instructions.htm
Good luck :)

worked like a charm... thank you once again :)
