Hello :)
I recently bought from ebay an amiga 500 and i am pretty much excited!! I never owned this amiga model and i can say that is a real beauty :)
To my questions...
I want to use workbench 1.3.2 as operating system.
1.) How i can possible do this? I mean i want the operating system running from HDD not floppy.
2.) Do i need an accelerator board with scsi controller and HDD. Is there an alternative way to have HDD to an amiga 500?
3.) Do i have to buy newer version of kickstart roms?
4.) Is it possible to use whdload to this machine?
Any other ideas are welcome of course :)
Thank you.

A 500 usually comes with 1.3 ROMs. If it has 1.2, you'll probably want to track down newer ROM's but those are common enough.
For the hard drive you need some sort of expansion to facilitate it.

runequester thank you for your reply!
I was wondering if it would be easier if i make some modifications to my amiga 1200.
For example is there a way i can have both kickstart 1.3 and kickstart 3.1 inside my 1200 with a rom switcher maybe...? I dont want to use ReloKick or something similar to it.
To be more specific i would like to play old a5oo games such as Shadow Of The Beast II that i own in original disks and with a1200 its impossible :/
Pls Pls Pls give me some ideas...

Well, I go to try of resolve some doubts:
1. The floppy disk, it works fine? because you have use the floppy disk for Amiga OS 1.3.
2. You can use a external controller, (I used M-TEC) where you can to install three important things for one Amiga 500, the Hard Disk of 100-200-300 MB, extra memory 2-4 MB and the third thing more important the ROM 2.0 or best 2.01 with it you can use Amiga OS 2.0-2.1 and it give you access to use the HD with the OS installed, and here you can install the WHLoad.
3. Important the mainboard revision, because the last boards have the FatAgnus with addressing of 2MB of chip memory and other things that I don't remember.
4. There are classic games that you can install without the WHLoad, (fews)
5. And very important the general state of your Amiga, mainboard, powersuply, keyboard, and floppy disk if the original is bad you have find one PC floppy but the single density 720 KB not the 1MB.
And for finish, is very difficult to find one controller, you can search for ebay and second hand, the Rom there are availables, 2.01, 2.0, even 3.0 for you can run the Amiga OS 3.0 in your A500, the memory now I don't know, the floppy drives, well, also is difficult find new Amiga drives, because are selling PC drives modified as true Amiga drives, but when you insert one disk, here is the problem, the Amiga doesn't run automatically, old single drives from PC, well, the second hand, and power supplies I think that there are in Amigashops.
I hope help you, in your Amiga experience.

Most old games can be made to work on A1200 and installed to the HD (like SOTB II) with:

I can't wouch for OS 3.5, but an Amiga 1200 on OS 3.0/3.1 with:
* Harddrive/CFcard
* WHDload
* 4-8MB RAM expansion (doesn't even need better CPU)
really works great for most gaming.
You can either WHDload patch your copy of the games or there are actually pre-patched ones in zip archives to get (just copy to 1200 HD and you're good to go).
I know I've played both SotB 1 and 3 on my Amiga already so I reckon 2 should be avaliable.

@Templario:
1. Floppy disk drive is in excellent condition :) Impossible huh?!
2. M-TEC A500 looks fantastic but i think its too hard to find anymore...
3. If i remember correctly its Rev.5 board... i will check when i will return home to be sure.
4. This is true but there are alot NDOS disks out there also...
5. Everything is in perfect working condition :)
Do you have any ideas on where i can find some empty 720K DD floppies?
-
@zipper: Can be made to work how? i have to find the game i im interested on that its *aga fixed* ? (sorry about my silly questions)
-
The WHD slave writers do the patching so that even games that work only with 68000 processor can be made to work with a 68020 or higher - or AGA. It may be difficult sometimes and the slaves may be improved as bugs get ironed out. Do read the WHDLoad docs!

The M-Tec is true now is difficult find one, but there are other controllers, although I don't remmenber the name and manufacturer.
And perfect that you have fine the floppy drive, and the disk problem, well, I have one idea and solution only the problem is where you live or what distance is there between Palencia me city and yours? why? because I have many floppys of 720 KB, with Amiga software and floppies that for example I got from drivers of printers, that are 7-8 floppys the good quality and the 720 KB, the question of distance for postage and packing and the systems of customs safety that damage them.

If your 500 is 1.2 what is the color of the CAPS LOCK light and what serial number is the machine ?
If you want the hard drive you will need to fit a side car or if very lucky an internal drive. The A590 was the common sidecar, though the GVP was also common. The MTEC I found was pretty poor, but worth a try.
I like the GVP to be honest.
If you find an accelerator for the 500 then let me know. Quite difficult to get. And really not important at all for games on the A500. Neither is the hard drive as the machine was designed to run games from the floppy.
The A1200 can be degraded to play 500 games, though I tend to keep my 500 just for playing games which I do run from the sidecar.

If you can find one an GVP A530 is an easy A500 expansion with an 40 Mhz 68030
upto 8 meg of 32 bit ram and an SCSI controller. Just may sure it already has ram, as GVP ram can be difficult to find.

If you cannot find a GVP A530 the GVP A500 HD 8+ is also nice.
