Yep, I am here asking you guys for advice about my A4000T, which doesn't boot.
I have been preparing it for sale to fitzsteve and going throught the drives, floppies, ZIPs etc to clean out persoanl data and format disks.
Everything was going fine yesterday: working CD, working hard disk with brand new OS3.9 boot, PPC running fine and all was good. Started putting all the zorro boards back in, starting with a DKB which went in fine.
After putting the PIV in slot 2, the Miggy would not boot, and that is how it has remained despite trying a lot of things:
Tried two different PSUs: one ATX with AT converter, one AT
Tried all three CPU cards: PPC, 060, 030. The machine powers up with all three, and responds to reset. On the 060 there is the familiar rainbow flash that you see every time you start. Tried different RAM on the 060 and PPC.
Tried two different disk modules, tried two different A/V modules.
Tried with and without the ports module.
Tried with floppy only, with no floppy and with various disks.
Took the mobo out of the case and looked for bad contacts, bad caps, broken traces. Can't find anything obvious.
Tried different SIMMs on the mobo
Cleaned all the zorro slots
Tried a different SCSI cable
So I am pretty much stuck. I haven't tried different CIAs as I don't think that's the cause. Not sure about that. They're socketed but will be difficult to remove.
Any ideas?

A better descrition of "won't boot" will go a long way!
Does the screen flash (other than the rainbow) any colors? Power light flash? Does it power up at all? What about the floppy drive. Does it click?
Since this happened when you installed the P-IV, have you checked that socket to make sure nothing got pushed into it with the card and maybe causing a short?

DKB and PIV where installed in the same order before?
i would try to swap the 2 for testing purpose.

Check out motherboard crystal oscillator, if it doesn't make good contact your machine won't boot.

Thanks for helping, mates (it is rather ironic I ask for help on my own A4000T, because I used to be really good with this but have forgotten so much).
J-Golden:
The symptoms are that the machine does power up and so do any drives that I connect. The screen goes a dark grey.
Framiga:
Yep tried different order and tried no zorro cards at all
Crumb:
I think it is something on the mobo also, will check that and get back to you.

What happens when you hit the caps lock key repeatedly? Does the light stay on eventually? If so, it's something to do with the processor. Card loose perhaps?
-
Crumb, you beauty!
It was a loose crystal. Boots fine now, all the boards are back in and it has a clean OS3.9 install.
Thanks very much dudes!
