Title: Donations to the kitty...
Post by: Kesa on July 21, 2011, 10:05:26 AM
OK this has to be done. Today i noticed both Sheep Banger and Smerf upgrading to a premium membership and this got me thinking about the rest of you lot. It would be great if everyone who uses Amiga.org would contribute to the kitty to help keep things running smoothly but not all of us do. Why?

This is a public poll so those who don't will be named and shamed.

You missed one, "Yes, when I get a job..." :/

Doesn't it say this on you profile?: " I'm a computer games programer and live with my long-term girlfriend in Nottinghamshire in the UK."
Did you really think you could get away with lying to me? *waves finger in disgust*   :madashell:

Doh, I should amend that to say: "I am _usually_ a computer games programmer, but am currently enjoying a lot of free time playing with my Amigas" :P

donating to the kitty is just a way for people to make random donations from time to time.

I voted "No. I am a cheapskate."
But it's more like "No, I've just bought a house and no longer have very much spare money"

I'm going to be honest and say, No. Why should i pay for a free service?

If the web site offered more than a news and web forum then I'd maybe consider it, for example I would definitely support http://www.abime.net with it great web forum, its magazine rack and hall of light section but no ware does it ask for donations!

Plus the fact is I do prefer AmigaWorld (which I would vote under “No, But been meaning to”).

I do support Donation, I've donated to JIT, Timberwolf, Aros Kickstart, AmigaPD, UAE and various others, just today notice $101 gone out for Viva Amiga and I'm buying an AspiROS USB stick from the developer.

So its not like i dont do my bit for the amiga community and I understand the importance of donations and of site like these its just that I've kind of decide that if and when I hit 1,000 posts on either Amigaworld or Amiga.org or any other forum I have used it enough to justify donating, if the website was really in trouble and needed to be saved then maybe I'd act, but considering the fact that you can get free web forums hosted (I know that could possibly mean more adverts) I would prefer it went down that route and the money go towards software/hardware that will help Amiga.

Plus I'm not rich, low income so can only do so much for what is a hobby.

I just recently donated my sanity to A.ORG.  Does that count?

Oh, and I DID pay for a year's subscription like less then a month before that.  So that makes me cool right?  We're all friends now, right?  guys?:nervous:

What if you've donated in the past, but haven't recently?   Honestly, I'm not on here as much anymore.  That said, I plan to "feed the kitty" every so often, just to keep myself honest.

I won a registered-user subscription paid for by somebody else.  I have no job so I have to rely on the charity of others in a similar fashion.  Once I get a job then we'll see how it goes.

I voted yes, though I have not yet donated to this particular Amiga related item, but I'll try to send ya'll something this week.

The reason? Well because it is small guys and not giant fascist corporations that keep Amiga alive and for that I am grateful!

I had forgot about that and I did say I would ask to run another compo again sometime in the future to give away more free memberships, to me that way the members benefit and so does A.org. I'll need to ask Pyro about it again... :)

I hear you been going to the end of the rainbow and beating up on them poor Irish leperichans,,haven't yeh.

Yeah, I heard from old saint pat himself that he is missing about 4 pots of gold.

How do you expect them leperchans to earn their wings if you keep stealing there gold?

Most likely more people willing to chip in to feed the kitty now that the server is running smoother.  I was going to kick a donation in awhile back, but the forums started timing out and etc., so I never did.

I've fed the cat quite a few times in the past but now I think the cat should feed me for having to read franko crap posts on the site. I won't donate a dime until he's gone.

Isn't that what the ignore feature is for?  Or is this some moral war where "a person shouldn't have to ignore people!!111"?

Just curious why using the ignore feature wouldn't work for most people.

The site has advertising, and cheap hosting requirements. What are the donations for and why are they needed? If it was for a specific thing then perhaps, but it seems to be an ongoing "please give", with no clue the amounts being taken already. no thanks.

We are not making millions here, not even hundreds. Donations have been minimal.

I never thought you were making millions - but an unknown amount still. I find it hard to believe you haven't made at least a few hundred including subscription fees and advert revenue, but since it's not published I will never know. It doesn't cost a lot to run a site like this. Some free time perhaps, but then, that's the same for lots of people who run amiga websites.

The subject is brought up quite often, so I'm just commenting on it.

The kitty - many years ago - would say how much was needed for the month and how much had been raised. Can that come back?

And it was!  Any money given to A.ORg, no matter how, is a donation.  Getting the account is, in a way, a "Thank You" for your donation.  If you don't want or need the account, then donating via "Feed the Kitty" comes into play. :)

The "Ignore" function works most of the time for me, otherwise I would no longer be here, but I gotta love the sentiment in koaftder's post.
