Title: PicassoIV and Z3
Post by: on December 17, 2002, 10:17:08 AM
Hi

Does anyone here know if picasso4 is able to run in Zorro3 mode with a rev 9 Buster?

My amiga refuses to boot if i have my picasso4 running in Z2/Z3 autosence mode, so i have to force it to run in Z2 mode and that is very slow.
It was running fine in Z2/z3 autosence mode when i bought it, but when i installed it in my machine it didn't work

My setup:
A4k
KS 3.1
Buster Rev 9
Cyberstorm MK2 040/40
Micronik ISA 4000 Busboard
Ariadne  network card
GVP I/O Extender

please help me before i go insane!

Should work just fine i once ran a A4k with  buster 9 and a brand new PIV card and it worked just fine! perhaps the card is faulty or the mobo has some issues! if you can try it in a friends Amiga.

I don't know, but software hut does Rev 11 busters for $29.95:

Click me (http://www.softhut.com/cgi-bin/test/Web_store/web_store.cgi?page=catalog/hardware/custom_chips/chip_buster.html&cart_id=9275602_11774)

I think Power Computing used to do them in the UK, but a quick search on there just turned up nothing  :-(

Hmm now that i think of it more it could be the micronik thats the problem! if you have the original zorro brigde try that one.

I remember when I got my Picasso IV (or was it the Picasso II before that?), the 4000 used to lock up occasionally and I was advised to upgrade the Buster.
Since I did so back in 1994, I've never had a lockup since.

To be honest, I can't remember whether it was the PII or the PIV, but the bus circuitry is probably similar. I'm sure that if you upgrade your Buster, the problem will go away. It's a well known and documented problem.

i bought the picasso and bussboard from the same person when he upgraded to a mirage tower so the problem should be my mobo, but i might test with the original zorro bridge some day anyway.
And i'm not sure if i want to invest my money into a new buster when i'm not sure that it will cure my problem.
It's a pretty stable machine exept for that Z3 problem, it has 23days uptime now

I had no problems to run CVPPC and PIV and CV3D at the
same time except some lost speed in my A4k/buster9.

Did your picasso run in Z2/Z3 autosence mode?

I think so - at least it's running on ZIII mode

I found the story by Dave Haynie (http://www.amiga-society.de/ahwbook/buster.html) about the Busters.

Try throwing out the GVP I/Oxtender, I think it is also Z2/3 autosense. Anyway I had the same problem myself, throwing out the I/Oxtender cured it.

I have actually never managed to get it working in Z3 mode, it is housed in my rev. 11 Buster  A4000 in a Mikronik tower, so I suspect it's the Mikronik daughterboards that are the culprits.
Though, I can remember trying the original daughtercard to no avail, either.

Throwing out the other zorro cards was the first thing i did when i found this problem, but that doesn't help me =(
