Title: Which is your favorite 80s/90s hand held?
Post by: dougal on July 06, 2011, 09:30:48 AM
As the title says, vote for your favorite 80s/90s hand held console.

For some this is an easy question and for others maybe not so much.

My first true hand held console was the Atari Lynx II. A great system by all means, but i preferred the Sega Game Gear, both for the looks of the console and especially because for me personally i much preferred the games on the Game Gear.

I am not a big fan of Missile Command, Robotron, Pac Man and other old arcade games. Much prefare stuff like Sonic, Castle of Illusion and Wonder Boy.

The Game Boy was also brilliant with its huge library of games and long battery life.

Now imagine if there was a hand held Amiga 500 :P

Good point. How silly of me, especially due to the fact that i have about 30 different Game & Watch games. :S

Feel free to add it :)

I also prefer the Game Gear, especially when I played most of the games on my A1200 with AmiMasterGear

The GameBoy was okay, but no match for the nicest games of the Game Gear.

The Atari Lynx can be considered as a hand held Amiga. It was developed by some Amiga engineers with collaboration of Epyx and Atari. Too bad the technology back then wasn't up to making hand held A500.

I loved the Atari Lynx.  It was very Amiga-esque hardware-wise which is not surprising as it was designed by members of the original Amiga team including RJ Mical and Dave Needle.  The games were great - gates of zendocon, California games, ramparts kept me occupied for many hours.  The gameboy was not even in the same league.

Yes the lynx had some very good games, Ninja Gaiden being my favourite along with California Games and Blue Lightning. And the build quality is much better. I still have a Lynx I which works perfectly.

The Game Gear offered more in terms of games from big third party publishers. And I love the TV Tuner. The Master System converter is another big plus. I used to love playing Shadow Dancer on my GG as a kid. And Wonder Boy Dragons Trap has got to be one of the best games on a Hand Held console.

The Gameboy also had it's advantages. Long battery life (10 hours +) and a huge library of amazing games like Links Awakening. Shame about the pea soup green non backlit display but I guess that's how it achieved it's excellent batter life.

Turbo Express all the way for me. Being able to play the TurboGrafx-16 hucards on a portable with backlight and color was pretty damn impressive for the time. The tv tuner was pretty cool, too. Plus hucards were awesome for portability. Being a huge Turbografx/PC-Engine fan, I wish NEC still made game consoles/handhelds.:(

Regrettably had to vote for game gear... It was simply the best compromise for the time :)

I liked the Lynx best, but they kept breaking down, so I settled with a game boy - at least they didn't break.

PCE-GT probably, then Gamegear. Lynx screen was really difficult to see most of the time, Gameboy was a piece of shit that had no business in my pocket :)

Only had the original Game Boy back in the late 80s, but recently I grabbed a Lynx off of craigslist, definitely a better system but the screen technology just wasn't where it needed to be yet.

I sort of wanted to vote for the atari lynx here. Interesting hardware that when put to good use can produce some impressive results, but voted for the game gear as its the machine I like most out of the physical machines Ive used (ie. not emulation).

I had both a Lynx and a Neo Geo Pocket Color and both were excellent, but the NGPC was the best out of the two.

Gameboy - the one, the only. An absolute classic.
Nomad - a terrific idea, except for the part where the battery life is half an hour if you're lucky. Oh well...
Wonderswan - had some really great games (now if only they'd ever been translated!) Also, points for being the only handheld to be based on the 8086, because I value quirkiness.

I was one of the daft kids that got a Supervision, ( http://www.consoledatabase.com/consoleinfo/supervision/ ) Shame it died off very quickly so only ever had four games for it, still got it today. It was pretty cool bending its head. But otherwise avoided the hand held market after that until I got a cheap second hand psp which I must say is a great hand held console.

Lynx all the way. Damn, now I'm itching to go home and scrounge through the closet to find the thing and see if it works still...

Game gear here. Also Wonderboy Dragon's Trap was awesome!!!

Agreed. Wonderboy Dragon's Trap is enough reason alone for the Game Gear to be my number one.

To be honest, although a great system and my first hand held, Lynx comes 3rd after the Game Gear and Gameboy respectively.

The Gameboy comes second because of its amazing games and battery life.

I inherited my friend's Lynx after he became bored with it after about half a year, and got himself a Gameboy. He only had one game for it though, so I got some more of my own. That first game was Scrapyard Dog, and I really loved it. I was envious of my friend up the coast who had a GameGear though, and sometimes we'd swap our handhelds for a few days to have a go of the games on the other system. I wanted games like Wonderboy in Monsterland, one of my favourite Amiga and arcade games, on a portable system, and the GameGear was the only one here that had it (we didn't get NEC consoles in Australia).

I still like the Lynx the most though, and I'd love to develop a new game for it some day. Thankfully the Lynx development system is an Amiga so I'll be right at home.

Lynx all the way!

The next best thing to a handheld Amiga.

I loved my Game Gear.

Although I do remember using it more with the mains than on the go.

Batteries were so damn expensive to a kid and the Master System PSU did the trick.

Never really used any of them, except for Gameboy for a few minutes.  Not really into such tiny screens and I'm not so addicted to video games that I would need mobile access!

I love the Lynx & Neo Geos, I still play on them every now and then but - and I know I'm showing my age - my first all time favourite was the Donkey Kong Game & Watch:

I notice there are a lot of you listing the fixed LCD games (like the Nintendo G&W series) as your favorites.

They were great and i agree that they should be listed. I did not list them in the vote because i was kind of referring more to consoles with cartridges. But since they are so popular i'm glad they are in the discussion :)

My favorites.. Hmmm well my first was a Tom & Jerry game by Gakken. I was probably about 3 years old at the time. Also great games are Donkey Kong JR (Game & Watch) and Super Mario Bros (Game & Watch).

And who could forget the Tomytronic 3D games? I was always amazed by them as a kid.
