I found an old post of someone trying to use just an original A1200 for his day2day computing needs.
Anyone already tried that with MorphOS, Amiga OS 4.1 or AROS?
That would include iOS devices sync? Coding for a mainstream platform?

I have thought about trying this with my MorphOS machine since it has the most up to date browser. (Not trolling! :))
The only things I would need would be:
-Browser that works with Gmail, Google docs.
-PDF reader (for resturant menu's ;) )
- Movie player like VLC
-Bit Torrent clinet w/GUI
-Simple image editor
If they could port something like Virtual box that would take care of everything that doesn't run native.

Is there a decent native mail client? You could just set GMail up for POP3 or IMAP use. (I doubt that'd help with Google Docs, though.)
My personal day-to-day consists mostly of text-oriented Internet, use of a plain text editor, and drawing - I'd be good for two out of three on my A3000, but I'd need a USB card and drivers for my Wacom (not to mention a quality image editor) for the drawing. Still, be interesting to try sometime.

Sure. I do it regularly. My everyday computer needs may be a bit unusual however...

It happens that I neither code for a mainstream platform nor own any iDevice.

MorphOS has Simplemail & YAM for email. They both look like they could handle it.
As far as an Image editor, does anyone know if the 68k version of Art Effect run on MorphOS?. I remember this program was pretty nice. I still have it here somewhere.....
-
It'd be a fun experiment.
If you aren't a hardcore internet person, you should be fine :)
Sadly, my 1200 is out of commission right now :(

Yip, art effect works fine.
-
I use MorphOS at home as my main OS. I can go several weeks without needing to use anything else. However work is a different matter as the software I need is of course not available for Morphos.

And how good is the best browser available?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Origyn_Web_Browser
It is based on webkit. Why it's not as good as safari or chrome?
Why it can't render google documents or gmail?

I'm not sure if it works with Gmail or Google docs?. I'll have to try it out this weekend and see. Maybe I'll try everything on my list there and see how it goes....

Depends on the port. The 3 versions of OWB for MorphOS, AROS and OS4 are all very different in features or stability.

Who said it couldn't work with google docs or google mail? It can.

ah, and BTW, I have a powermac 933 with 1.5gb of RAM, but, unfortunately with a Radeon 9600 XT. As rv300 will only/mabye be supported in the future, how well MorphOS 2.7 works without 3d acceleration? I should give it a try just after I submit my new iOS game to the App Store! :)
BTW2, the new game uses shadow of the beast parallax inspired graphics (for the menu) *PS* I paid! a Swedish designer to completely redraw it!!! and a Workbench 1.3 inspired window as "about box"
-
This post just about describes me. I only use windows for my Doom and Media editing needs for the most part.
-
OWB can handle google docs. At least on MOS and the AROS Version.
I asume OWB for AmigaOS can do it too.
MOS, AmigaOS 4 and AROS with use of AmigaForever can utilize classic applications like Art Effect, Lightwave, Amiga Writer and so on.
On AmigaOS 4 you can also use some Linux apps... MOS has a very good port of Blender (well Amiga OS too but i feel that MOS is more stable and snappier than AmigaOS 4).
Personally i can do all i need for consuming and playing around with AROS.
AROS+ AMC runs on my HTPC in the living room.
I have an AresOne 2010 on my desk and a Lexmark Laser to my right : )
Art Effect works really snappy on JanusUAE. Google docs is fast at least since Broadway 0.0.5 : D
Musicians can play with Audio Evolution, Protrakker and others and classic Amiga Software.
Lightwave is really enjoyable and we are enjoying to render models created on an Windows Workstation on JanusUAE : D -just for fun
For Imaging (native AROS) you can use for example graphx 2 (offers layers)
With lunapaint and those tools: http://portacall.org
you can create also nice animations.
Than there is also Lodepaint and a few others.
There is much to play with.
The most polished option is MorphOS, AROS is the fastest, AmigaOS 4.x the official successor.
-
I have an Aspire One, and while I am growing fond of Aros, I can not deny that MorphOS is light years ahead. And I've also heard that it is snappier than OS 4, but can not confirm this.
Also for the note, there are a slew of classic Amiga apps that run just fine on MorphOS without being bothered by the lameness that is UAE.
Not trying to start a flame war of course, I just want MorphOS' many strengths to be known so more people might give it a look. It's awesome!
-
Hi,
sorry to say this but an aspire is lame... ; ) ATOM sucks badly.
*duck*
But if you run AROS on an 2.7GHZ ore more with a few MB cache i am not sure if UAE is lame. The last fixes deadwood did to speed up OWB have also accelerated things like Quickstarter and Other apps.
No flame wars ; ) i am selling AROS PC's and tell you MorphOS is fine/numero uno. They have the better overall package "still". But AROS has some other things ahead.... Gallium and Wifi for example. Now AROS can benefit from getting for example Ambient. MOS can benefit from Gallium and Wifi...
-
AROS can run 68k binaries by double clicking on it? Just like OSX's Rosetta (ppc->Intel)?
MOS and AOS4.1 can do it, right?
-
AROS can this too:
http://www.youtube.com/user/AresComputer1#p/u/4/CtvfmTadXbk
but it needs for now AmigaForever.
This may change with AROS 68K sooner than later.
-
Aspire One is a pile of crap, but with AROS, it ain't too shabby. I just to pretend it is not what it really is. :)
And for the note, you can not run Amiga Classic Apps on AROS without UAE. MorphOS on the other hand can handle classic apps just fine, so long as they do not need the original chip set.
-
Just installed MorphOS 2.7 on my Quicksilver 933 1.5gb RAM with a Radeon 9600 XT.
first impressions:
1) No support for Brazilian ABNT Keybord! :)
2) font is too small!
3) It`s not exactly flying, but I`m only using it for 5 minutes. I`ll post more impressions later.
two questions:
1) having no 3d acceleration impacts on performance, or just when using 3d games? What I`m missing?
2) How can I tell if I`m already pass the 30 minutes period? Just by looking at the watch?
-
Oh, and Google documents seems slower than OSX tiger (same HW, of course)
-
This post just about describes me. I only use windows for my Doom and Media editing needs for the most part.
I gave up on Doom after pretty much memorizing the entire layout. I now primarily play with QuakeIII Arena which will run under MorphOS.
About the only thing I miss is good Flash support under OWB.
MorphOS is a fine daily use OS. I have three Windows machines that see very little use.

That's what extended Doom ports are for, they give Doom capabilities it never had before thus making it less predictable and more complex. Also there is a Massive Mod community for it who have converted it into various things such as a Half-Life clone with 3D models and all. I've also ran a few Quake 3 maps on it that worked Exactly like they would have in Q3 itself. You really have no concept of what you are missing! :)
-
There's even a random map generator, (http://www.doomworld.com/slige/) though it's hardly up to, say, Angband standards of level quality. Still, worth a look.
-

Google document is a bit slowish, but let's not forget everything is rendered with software cairo there.
On the other hand, video playback is way faster than OSX on the same hardware, be it with mplayer or with owb html5 video (when it's in overlay mode).

Since I live in the future and my home is native IPv6, MOS/O4/AROS only is a no-go.

That is a poorly worded statement. You live in the present and hope for a future.
Further, I see nothing stopping any of those OS' from supporting future internet standards like IPv6, so I have no idea why you brought it up.

I live in the future, because in my present, IPv6 is not a future internet standard, but one that's already more than a decade old. Or it might just happen that you live in the past, take your pick.
I've been bringing up the issue about IPv6 for more than a decade now, you see I live in the future and my home has been IPv6 native since 2005. Don't believe me? Try searching the Miami mailing lists - Holger Kruse was the only amiga developer ever who ever did anything in regards to IPv6, I was whining about it already back then. The things stopping any of the AmigaOS "spin offs" from supporting this decade+ old internet standard is ignorance, highly optimistic views on what routers can do, and a huge faith in that IPv6 will never happen.
-
And just some quick links to back up my statement:
Holger Kruse mentioning IPv6 in 1999 (http://vancouver-webpages.com/vanlug/1999-3/0029.html) - allthough he never really got started on it, he knew it was ahead. Implementing multicast support in MiamiDx was one milestone on the way, as MC is mandatory for IPv6 to work.
Me whining about IPv6 support in MiamiDx back in 2000 (http://www.rebol.org/ml-display-message.r?m=rmlFLNB) on the REBOL mailing list.

I never said IPv6 wasn't important, kolla. IPv4 is virtually obsolete, so change is inevitable.
What I don't understand is why you think OS support for IPv6 isn't possible to introduce.
-
I've never heard of it. What ever became of plain old fashioned HTML anyhow? The internet sux now a days. You got adverts, pop ups, adware, etc. It's like you go to load one page, but your are gathering data from a billion other servers at the same time. I hate it and would gladly go back to the 1994 standard any day...
...with today's speed of course.
As for videos, I'll download them, streaming sux anyhow cause you can't keep what you watch. Meh, tired, must go home and milk the goat.
Where's Franko?! :/

I don't think it's impossible, I just think noone is interested in doing it, and regardless, it's waaaay late in the game now. To be of any use, all applications in use that supports tcp/ip need to be partly rewritten and updated as well.

Tried? I've been using MorphOS as my main daily computer since 2004, and before that I used my fully upgraded monster A1200 :)
That would include iOS devices sync? Coding for a mainstream platform?
Can't say about that. Never had any need on those. But of course you can connect to remote computer with SSH2 if you have coding environment there :) Depends how you define your mainstream coding... of course there are editors, but if you want to cross compile or something like that...
-
The only things I would need would be:
-Browser that works with Gmail, Google docs.
OWB can do that.
-PDF reader (for resturant menu's ;) )
APDF is included with the OS and even if it's not fully compatible with everything, I've found it good enough to show that kind of things. Most ads, restaurant menus etc have worked here with it.
- Movie player like VLC
MorphOS version of mplayer is more than enough for that. I'd say it's the best version of mplayer on any platform ;) It has good GUI and works like charm. There's also VLC port available, but it's more immature and there's no need for it because of the excellent mplayer port.
-Bit Torrent clinet w/GUI
There are some clients, but they aren't as good as µTorrent etc on other platforms. You can get job done if you want, but I'd recommend to have some other spare machine for heavy use.
-Simple image editor
Included ShowGirls is just marvellous for digital photo handling etc. It does all the needed basic effects etc. But if you need more like drawing app, then there are many 68k options. ArtEffect, FXPaint, Photogenics, ImageFX, TVPaint, PPaint.. oh and included Sketch for simple drawing. Depends what you want to do in practise...

1) Ask for it! (mailing list, irc, bugreport)
2) Change it :)
3) Should be pretty snappy, but I haven't ever seen it on that gfx card... maybe its drivers aren't that finished yet and missing 3D might affect too.
two questions:
1) having no 3d acceleration impacts on performance, or just when using 3d games? What I`m missing?
2) How can I tell if I`m already pass the 30 minutes period? Just by looking at the watch?
1) You'll miss enhanced mode in normal use too. All windows in Ambient etc would be drawn using so called 3D layers, using 3D hardware on gfx card. That would enable shadows and transparency effects etc, there wouldn't be any tearing in window moving, double or triple buffering could be used... etc..
2) There will be nag requester and you probably notice the slowdown too :)
-

I use SimpleMail for GMail. No problems with that, it supports secure connections etc needed.

The name "OWB" for Fab's MorphOS browser is really confusing and should obviously be changed ASAP. This is nothing like "OWB" on OS4 or AROS. In fact, I think there isn't much "OWB" left in it at all...
It's a webkit based browser (*the same* engine as in Safari and Chrome), capable of HTML5/CSS3, javascript, etc. It's heavily inspired by Ibrowse, it's very feature rich and since it's a real MUI4 application it looks and behaves in a way that any Amigan used to Ibrowse simply loves! :)
You can easily use this as your single, true, everyday web browser. Everything works, Facebook, Google Apps, etc.
Heck, even the online version of Microsoft Office (http://www.amiga.org/forums/showpost.php?p=625661&postcount=26) works! ;)
The only, single set back I can think of, is the rather poor Flash support, but that is not a unique issue for MorphOS, and at least when it comes to video/utube there are nice workarounds...
:)

Well, so looks like I'll have to wait for rv300 support anyway. I don't have plans to buy "another" old card! :) I don't have more free space to store my "vintage" tech material.
It's the same core of the mobile radeon on powerbook g4s?
2) There will be nag requester and you probably notice the slowdown too
Well, I ended up seeing that. In the middle of the "Ultimate Pack" installation! :)
I had to install Tiger again and I have created 3 partitions:
1) ~50gb for tiger
2) ~20gb for MorphOS
3) ~10gb for OS9
But then I found that I needed another tiny partition to boot MorphOS. Is it possible to install morphOS on the 20gb partition without destroying the tiger installation? What's used for boot manager?
-
There is a guide on how to do what you require. But its using ubuntu.
Bootmanager, hold down ALT whilst booting the machine lol

I'm with you there, but IPv6 is actually pretty important - we're running out of IP addresses with the current 32-bit scheme. (And it only relates to the number of places you can transport data to, anyway - it has nothing to do with crappy modern Web content.)
-

When we receive Powerbook support we should get R300 3D drivers.
No one seems sure if this will be in the next revision or the one after (although I'd bet on the latter).
Your MorphOS partition may be a bit small if you want to install the "Ultimate Pack", but you probably won't use everything in the package so you could install the titles selectively.

If you will submit the keyboard layout description, and test it then, this keymap can be added to the system. Contact me privately if you are interested.

Why do you say you "would need" them? I´d expect all of it to work on MorphOS, since all the people here keep telling me MorphOS is so much better than AmigaOS 4 and none of it is a problem on AmigaOS 4.
I don´t have any MorphOS experience - so enlighten me, if I am wrong.
However after two years of using a SAM440EP Flex running AmigaOS 4 as my main machine. I recently bought a new PC for that purpose. The Sam isn´t completely retired and it was sure fun during those two years, but I simply wanted to use a faster machine that would take new sound- or gfx-boards without any trouble.
I am the kind of person that really loved the original look, feel and organsization of Workbench. I never looked at the early Dopus and disliked popup-menus, focus follows mouse, autoraise or anything that would take away my icons. This was the reason to get the SAM.
If somebody made a Linux-Desktop-Environment and toolkit that would imitate Intuition & Workbench to the last detail, I´d walk some extra mile to use it. That being said Unity is not bad, but extremely buggy and Linux won´t see my blueray drive at all.
