I couldn't remember the name of it for the longest time but FINALLY tracked it down! It was a Quick Shot joystick and at the time I thought it was the coolest thing to ever be invented.
It was the Intruder:

I think I can safely say it single handedly got me hooked on fighter games. This thing just made it feel that much more real for F-18, Elite II, and SO many others...
There was another fight yoke also by QuickShoot that had an artificial horizon built into the yoke. It was just for show but for some reason I thought it was really cool also.
So what cool perifs. did you all really get into?

Despite being a nice joystick for Flight games...
... the "Chuck Norris" of joysticks for the Amiga/Atari/etc... imho is clearly the Tomahawk!

Anyone that had it back then... still has it and it's 100% operational without any issue not to mention it's solid like Thor's hammer (lol).
Before anyone would say that the buttons are opposite than you're used too, it wasn't for us Greeks (since Tomahawk is proudly a Greek joystick) that we used the fire on left hand and stick on right (all cabinets were made like that anyway here).
-
I had a Competition Pro growing up. Had it right up to the C64 dying then I ditched it. Shame because that was a really good stick.
-
I always like the epyx 500xj and the way it fit my hand.. I have a Tac2 here and man is it well made! I just got the Sliktik too, which is cool though small.
-
I know it's not an amiga stick but I always like this one:
My current joystick is a zipstick. It's alright but it needs some new switches inside.
-
No no! The best all-round joystick for gaming was the Powerplay Cruiser.
-
I used a plain ole Wico Red Ball Stick. $50 in 1984 which was a lot then, and it still works fine today, with some replaced micro switches and rubber bush. I've been looking after my stick...
-
I've got one of these, I think it's a good competitor for that Tomahawk above.
Weighs probably 5lbs, real arcade buttons and all.
However, my favorite from back in the 80s was probably the red and black Wico with the interchangeable bat/ball/flight grip.

It's definitely a manly Joystick there mate :D
Not to mention that along with Tomahawk you can use it as a weapon to smack someone's butt in case he leaves you dying in "Warzone" LOL

Call me a pervert, but I liked the rather different Cheetah Bug :
I also had a few Cheetah 125+ over the years, and a Cruiser which was also good.
-
I can't believe they sold that to children.
-
I can't remember the name of my first joystick but it was a texturerd rubber with red button on top of the joystick itself, that eventually broke and i've had a zipstick that works perfectly ever since, that said i do sometimes use my Megadrive pads
-
The most annoying thing with the cheetah bug is that I destroyed them in less than 2 weeks every time. My girlfriend at the time loved them however. I preferred something a little more durable as I played a lot of shoot-em-ups. I just wish I could remember the name of my favourite one, it had a square base with round bits on each corner and suction pads to hold it down. It was made of grey plastic with red buttons and had an auto-fire lock feature. If I remember the name of it I'll post it up.
Ah ha, found it via google, this is the one: http://www.richardlagendijk.nl/cip/joystick/item/quickjoy_sv-126/en

I always loved the Hornby Turbo 360 touchpad. One of the very few controlers I owned that didn't die horribly within days of me getting it.
Hmm, you can still find them on Amazon! Amazing :D

You too huh. Chaos Engine killed a few for me, my local computer shop took them back every couple of weeks but never complained, they still made a couple of quid on every one they sold, returned or not.
-
I used the Wico Ergostick with my Amigas back in the day.
-
For me it was the Konix Epyx 500XJ Joystick. (I'l like to find a working one for sale btw)

Wow, quite a resemblance to the Wii nunchuck controller!
-
I remembered when I was growing up, I had a Pointmaster that I was sure I really liked..
When I was out at Goodwill a bit ago, I found one and brought it home..
SWEET!!!
er..
Until I used it...
OUCH!! That thing hurts!!!
Maybe it fit my smaller/younger hands better, but I can't use it for more than 10 minutes without it really hurting...
There's a round ridge that just digs into my palm...
So much for memories..
:-)

what came first, the Wico or the Cheetah?

The worst ones for me were any joystick that had the firebuttons on the actual pistol grip rather than the base, I could (and did) break them in minutes. I had a joystick for about a year that was similar to the competition pro but the stick itself was slightly longer than the comp pros and the part that connected the base and the stick together didn't protrude quite as much.
As far as the games I played that killed them went, yeah, Chaos Engine bagged a couple, I actually got banned from playing Speedball 2 due to the attrition rate at one point, but the one that destroyed the most was a "Gods" clone whose name I can't remember. Utterly brutal on the controllers.
-
I've gone through many many joysticks and must say that yousticks like the bug, Wico Ergostick, Konix Epyx 500XJ (owned all three) never worked for me. Joypads are universal but lack some of the feeling, think my fav is the Competition Pro however I keep several different ones as they all have special feeling or memories attached... ow and it's always good to have 2, 3 or even 4 of each in case you want to play with friends so all can have the same one.

I never liked the Competition despite having 2 already.
My hand hurts after a quarter playing that never happened with the Tomahawk. It's really uncomfortable for my taste.
Playstation controllers connected to Amiga though are very cool (for a pad).

I will talk about two joysticks:
First the best one ever made, with the best control (that's what it's made for) is the megadrive Quickshot Chimera 3, that I use in my miggy:
You control all movements with two fingers, and you use the right hand for the buttons. It's insuperable (IMHO).
Just an observation: How are all of the joysticks now, Playstation, XBox...? You have them in your hands, you control movements with your left hand (one or two fingers) and the buttons with the right hand (some with the left one, sometimes loosing control). If there were less buttons (for an Amiga, for example) and without vibration, you would have them exactly like mine that I bought in the 90's... and what about using a button just like a gun (can you imagine it?) and having a firm grip in your right hand?. Ah, and it's got Autofire too.
And the second, which I don't like very much is this:
If you need a big button, it has "The BUTTON". Watch a video to see how to use it:

Shit best not buy that controller if thats what it's gonna do
-
think my fav is the Competition Pro
For me the Arcade was my favorite, the ones in the middle of the picture.
Anyone remember decathlon on C64 ? You needed to have robust joysticks like the Arcade to withstand all the joystick wiggling.
greets,
Staf.
-
My favourites are of course the Competition Pro and more unusually, the Konix Navigator. I love them for different reasons, the Competition Pro is just so sturdy and workmanlike, the Navigator just fits like a glove and works. Autofire on Xenon II was always handy too :)

Best joystick I ever had: Konix Aviator, looks uncomfortable but you play for hours with it.
-
The TAC 2 and the smaller Slik Stik are two of most indestructible joysticks ever made. They are also quick and accurate.
I have one Slik Stik that's been with me for almost 20 years! And it still works like new.
