Title: Must Have Software?
Post by: Kernel on May 26, 2011, 02:00:33 AM
Since I'm getting back into the Amiga, I ony recall a few of the cool and useful "must have" tools/utilities/programs out there.  I'm sure I've missed even newer ones while I've been away too.

So, how about everyone put their favorite programs here in the thread with a little blurb about what they do and where to get it (I'm sure aminet)...

If there is already a thread like this, just point me to it.

I recall a few useful ones or cool ones that I liked.  Obviously since I'm just getting back into it, I don't know where to find them all but I'll start on Aminet.  I won;t put their function either since I'm pretty sure these were/are well known.

MagicMenu
ToolsX
NewIcons
MUI
MagicWB
MiamiDX
NickPrefs
SpinDisk
NoClick
BlitzBlank
SwazInfo
Citadel/Paragon/Zeus (BBS Programs)
JRComm
PointerEyes
PointerX
Voyager (and other VaporWare programs)
LacePointer
Scalos
AmigaStart95
VisualPrefs
MagicCX
MouseOff
GlowIcons
AESIcons
ARQ
ReqTools
SoftBoot
MCP

I know there were more but I just can't think of them.  Some I'd like to find...

Minimize Window
ESC Close Window
function Key Assign Command
Draw Window Off Screen
Alt Tab
Dock/Taskbar

Yeah, Windows function decidedly but useful features.

Just a plain application, but hippoplayer is awesome. Been able to play just about every mod I've downloaded

Please add why those applications are necessary..

Communications software,
Disk imager,
Archivers,
Compiler,
Texteditor
(are good tools to have)

Ah yes, text editors, archivers... forgot about those!  Some of the ones cfrom my list are pretty useless now of course other than for nostalgic reasons, like the BBS and terminal software.  However, I was thinking of starting the old BBS up on the net for fun.

Those are all good software on a amigaos 3.0/3.1 setup, however some of them have been replaced by other/better software and some of them are not needed with for example amigaos 3.9 (you could use amidock to launch programs for example). And if you're using amigaos 4.0 or 4.1 even more of those software are replaced with better options.

Regarding a startmenu amistart is a good option.
