I am thinking of buying a 10MHz 68010 CPU to upgrade my CDTV and would like to know which software and games will break and quit working if I decide to do this upgrade.
I am also adding a DKB MegaChip 2mb Chip RAM upgrade, Kickstart switcher with 1.3 and 3.1 Kickstart ROMs (I have the developer Flash ROM board to load the correct PROM images to enable using later Kickstart images, so I don't need to buy and install new 2.3 PROMs) and adding a hard drive via the SCSI adapter/controller in the expansion slot. Maybe an IndivisionECS in the future too, but for now I have plenty 1084 & 1080 CRT monitors that still work well, so there is no hurry to get the IndivisionECS installed (though I might buy it to make sure they don't go out of production before I get an extra for this CDTV project.) I also might install an AdIDE and IDE to CF adapter & CF card to use instead of trying to fit an internal SCSI hard drive, or find a rare 2.5" laptop SCSI drive. I already have a ZIP optical drive connected to the external SCSI port.
So, if any of you remember which software and games were not compatible with the 68010, please let me know. I am hoping the list is a short one, as there are not many options for CDTV acceleration (at least one's that fit under the stock case).
I have a 50MHz Derringer w/FPU & 16mb, or 32mb of Fast RAM that could be used, but that will definitely not fit inside the stock CDTV case and the only time I have seen one used on a CDTV looked horrible with a ugly case modification.

I saw no increase in speed on anything that worked on 2010.
But as far as system software goes you should run the patch called Decigel I think. So that just leaves games. The 3D section of most games was not faster though so I removed my 68010 from my A1000 pretty soon.
-
The 68010 is only about 10% faster than the 68k at best and introduces a couple of small incompatibilities, Im not sure you will see any kind of benefit at all.
oh yes, and your clock speed will be the same as the 68k as its dictated by an external clock. Its a hardware hack to make the cpu faster while keeping the rest of the hardware at the old speed, and anything that relies on CPU timing will be wrong.
-
The main advantage of the 68010 over a 68000 is that you can "exit" back to Workbench (tm) from WHDLoad with a 68010.
You won't see an inrease in speed (not noticable, it'll still be clocked at 7Mhz regardless of the rating on the CPU) and there will be some compatibility problems...
Not sure if the WHDLOAD slaves help the compatibility problems (as they do with other accelerators).

I put an Insider RAM card in my A1000 about a year ago, that came with a faster 68010 CPU. I saw absolutely no increase in speed for games, and had a couple of games that would tend to crash (for reasons I never discovered). I am back to a box stock 68000, but running 2.5Mb of RAM.

Wow the good ol 68010. I actually have one of these on an A500. It is a pass-thru device and I have an external hard drive kit attached on the other side of the 68010. As far as increased performance, I never noticed anything spectacular.
-
I forgot to mention, Anything made for the 68k that works ok on the 020 or above should work on the 010 as well. So more or less everything really.

I got a 68010 in my A1000. I have not really run into anything that won't run on it. I do have Decigel.lha patch in there. I like it, SysInfo show a tiny improvement.
This is nice brain wash for you to read too:

Hi,
@Amigadave,
I had a 68010 way back in 1987, 1988, in my A1000, had no trouble running anything, but there may have been trouble running some Electronic Farts games. I can't really remember, anyhow electronic fart was one of the reasons that I started pirating copy protected software. Never did pirate any non protected software. I figured if I pays my money I should be able to have backups of what I bought.

I had a 68010 in my A1000. There was a small speed difference. Rendering scenes in Turbo Silver I think the difference was only about 4-5%, but there were some demos that ran jerkily with the 68000 and smoothly with the 68010 so the difference was noticeable sometimes. There would have been more benefit from some actual fast RAM (I did the piggyback hack to put my A1K to 1MB), and the combination of fast RAM with the 68010 could have been better again, because IIRC, with the 68010 it was possible to move the VBR to fast RAM.
There were several games that wouldn't run on my A1000 but sometimes it was because of the 68010 and sometimes the weird RAM expansion. I think that Shadow of the Beast was one of the titles that wouldn't work because of the 68010 but it's so long ago I'm no longer sure. I remember going through all my software with the 68000 and the 68010 and I had a table that showed which ones worked, which didn't, and which could be fixed by running SuperDecigel first.

Best reason to add 010 would be WHDLoad, exit key works after that. With that memory you have, it would be nice whdload machine
-
If I'm not mistaken, there are a few problems with a few hardware-hitting games and software that rely on exact timing of the CPU to do whatever they do. The 010 execute a few instructions faster than the vanilla 68000, so those particular programs won't work.
-
I seem to remember that the 68010 causes a few quirks with RTFM (I think it was called that), the CDTV boot loader which stopped a few of the games from loading. Sim City and Lemmings were the worst affected.
-
Is there any 020 and above accelerators that allow the CDTV case to be closed?
-
A friend of mine made a demo star scroller optimized for 68010. It has a "loop mode", from Wikipedia.
``Additionally, the 68010 had a "loop mode", which could be considered a tiny and special-case instruction cache, which accelerates loops that consist of only 2 instructions.''

I wanna see that, and want to see the code too....

It could be that I am one of a handful of people who has ever seen that.
He had this annoying habit of writing really cool little things, but never releasing them, because it wasn't a full demo or game or anything.
Incredibly talented guy, I wonder what became of him...

Bomber (http://hol.abime.net/525) won`t work...
It`s not an upgrade that worth the trouble. Keep the CDTV as is

That is what I was thinking. Or I could take the AdSpeed out of my A500 and transplant it into the CDTV. I think it uses a 68010 and runs it at 7MHz and 14MHz with a software switch to start the speedup.
To answer the other person's question, there were at least one or two 68020 accelerators for the CDTV that were produced and sold, but are most likely very rare. I am sure those accelerators allowed the case to be closed without modification. A very good source of info on the CDTV is CDTV.org. Lots of info and pictures of all the CDTV add-ons and accessories.
