Do you have other programs running? If you have a harddisk or more than one diskdrive, then you have less memory.

Boot it without startup-sequence and start amiga explorer from the cli.

A stock A600 comes with only 1mb of RAM.  I have an A603 RAM expansion board for sale cheap, if you are interested send me a PMail here.  Otherwise there is a new version named the A604 that will be released in June (hence my reason for wanting to sell my A603 memory expansion board).

It will give your A600 a total of 2mb of Chip RAM, instead of the stock 1mb and it fits into the trap door slot below your A600.

It will be tough to transfer files to your A600 before you get a hard drive or compact flash drive set up and working.  Specially with only the stock 1mb of RAM.

To continue:
Amiga 600 can be upgraded to max 2mb of chip ram (as with amigadaves A603)
Then you can also add fast ram either thru the pcmica slot on the left side or with accellerator added ram.

All amigas do better with 2mb of chip ram and some (prefer 4mb) of fast ram.
The 600 with a hard drive (or cf card) and chip and fast mem will perform quite well.

Hold down both mouse buttons at power up. You'll see a boot without startup requester at the bottom of the boot items screen.

Hi thank's for the info have got the 4gb cf card just waiting for the new kickstart rom two arrive, i just find it odd that it runs out of memory when the A500plus can transfer the adf's no problem with the same 1meg of memory
Kind Regard

ps i will pm you for a price on the a603

The 500 had 512 chip ram and 512 fast ram.
The 600 only has 1mb of chip ram. NO fast ram...that's why it runs out.

Amigas really need both chip and fast mem.

Ok that would explain the running out of memory, feel kind of stupid now.

Happens to all of us...

Just two days ago thegoose was telling me to go to school for a basic computing class...(grin)

I hope this was a joke - or maybe I haven't understood the fine trolling humor of Amiga.org yet.

If you have 1 MB of RAM, then transferring a flopppy image to the RAM disk isn't very wise. It has nothing to do with the chipmem/fastmem configuration, it's simply that the disk image is too big to fit in the available RAM.

You have around 740 kB of free memory after booting, and an ADF file is almost always bigger than that, hence it won't fit.

On the other hand, upgrading your RAM to 2MB will let you download the file to the RAM disk and then transfer it to your CF card. Chip or fast doesn't matter as long as you have a free continous block of memory the size of the ADF file, which you should get with a 1MB RAM expansion.

You say that you have a 4GB CF card in your A600. Transfer the ADF files to a directory on this card instead of to the RAM disk.

Unfortunately, you failed to notice TS was talking about an A500+ (plus), which, like the A600, has 1 MB chip mem as standard. Through the trap door, it can be expanded to 2 MB chip mem max, just like the A600.

Apart from that, the standard A500 (without the '+') only has 512 KB chip mem and no fast ram at all. Through the trap door, it can be expanded to 512 KB chip and 512 KB fast (well...) mem ór to 1 MB chip mem.

There's not much technological difference (if any) between an A600 and an A500+, apart from the pcmcia and on board ide-ports.

No, it does not. Any Amiga runs perfectly well without fast ram, although extra fast ram makes it a nicer experience. And yes, there are programs which need fast ram, but for most programs it is just optional. Highly recommended to have some fast ram (4 MB will do nicely in  most cases), though.

Hi thank's for the reply's that's what i thought the A500+ and the A600 are very similar in memory it's like i said i can transfer adf's two the A500+ but not the A600 unless the A600 users more memory to boot the workbench disk i really dont know,i just thought there was something wrong with the A600's memory

No, you're just using too much of it already. If you're booting the two amiga's off the same bootdisk then the difference could be due to extra hardware in the 600 using more memory.

Either the IDE or the PCMCIA slot drivers could be using ram, even though they haven't got anything plugged into them. Also having extra floppy disk drives uses more ram.
