Title: Average Amiga user age?
Post by: amigadave on May 17, 2011, 09:35:23 PM
Not how old are you, but how long have you been an Amiga user?  I was just wondering how long many of our most active posters here have been using an Amiga.

Edit:  My curiosity is mostly how many users fall into the last choice in the poll, how many are "Newbies" and have only started using an Amiga within the last 5 years or less.  I know that there are some that have posted on the forums here that have stated that they have only been using an Amiga for a few years, which is surprising that there are people that could be interested in starting to use a system that was designed and produced over 25 years ago.  It is a real testament to what the Amiga is and how unique it is, as I doubt that any other system of similar age could boast it has as many new users as the Amiga.  Who would be interested in starting out with an Atari, an Apple II, or even the famous Commodore64, if they had no previous experience with those or other old computer systems in the past to spark their interest in old systems.  The Amiga has an appeal that none of the other old computer systems have, that can still inspire a curiosity and interest in new users today.  Not a large number of people, but still some new users are drawn to the Amiga each year.  Unfortunately, the number of new users is only a fraction of the number of Amiga users that stop using Amiga systems and our community continues to decline in numbers.

I found out about the Amiga in the late '90s and acquired one in 2000 - but I had to part with it shortly thereafter, and didn't get back into things until early 2010.

Wish you had a choice for people who were pioneering users but stopped for period(s) of time.

From 1989ish to 1995ish then again recently.  So beginning puts me into old timer, but if you count active years I'm just above newb.

I first used one around 1987ish but never owned one of my own until early 1993. By the end of that year I had two

I belonged to a Commodore User Group that was bombarded by Commodore and local Commodore and Amiga dealers from the time the Amiga was released (or maybe a wee bit earlier). There was a lot of activity with the user groups back then.
I almost bought an A1000, but waited until the first A500s came out.

Since mid 1987. Joined A.org I think some time late 1996, before the reboot years later.

Hi,

Bought mine about 2 weeks after they came out. Would that count as Forever?

Bought my first Amiga World magazine 2 weeks before the Amiga 1000 arrived in the store so that I could read up on it and see if it was even worth looking at, it partially sounded to good to be true, when the Amiga 1000 came out looked at it for two weeks after that (everyday) before I bought it. Had to make up my mind since I was programming with Lotus 123 and Dbase II. Bought the Amiga 1000 then bought Transformer. Worked at great and only spent $1295.00 for the Amiga 1000, and $99 for Transformer. Saved about $1000 not having to buy a PC (really expensive from $1595 for a Tandy Sensation to $4995 for a big blue).

Wow. 19 years of using Amiga is a little surprising. You lose track of time. 8) Those long trips to Portland Maine for the user group are still a fun memory.

Got mine in 92, but had messed with them at a friends place prior to that.

Had a period from 98 or 99 on where I was on PC's though emulation came up. Now Im back :)

Since about '89: an A500, rev 5. Used it until being replaced by a 486 in '93. Replacing it with a pc was a good choice. Yes, it really was. The A500 desperately needed replacing and the choice was between a more recent Amiga and a pc. The pc won, obviously.

Since then, I sold the A500 and got me several other Amigas as retro computers (A1200, A2000, A3000). And although I still prefer my pc for normal day-to-day stuff, the Amiga is much nicer to fool around with.

you can't compare fooling around with a PC to an Amiga... :D
Amiga fools around better. Even now i use my PC for alot of stuff BUT if i want to relax or play around or experiment then nothing beats the feeling you get from your Amiga.

Actually counting the hours till work finishes, feed and put kids to bed, do backups of all the servers and THEN get onto my Amiga's and play around with them.

I bought an A2000 from the President of our local Commodore Users Group in 92 or 93.  He had bought a new A1200.  I was still very heavy into 8 bit at the time but the Amiga slowly dug her claws in.

Since '88 or '89; don't actually remember :) Bought one of some guy that were selling it off because he was going to be a foreign exchange student for a year.

Then there was a big gap from '98, when I gave up on my A3000 in favor of a much faster PC with Linux, to the X1000 announcement last January got me to check out the various forums and enticed me back (just with UAE, AROS and a Minimig for now)...

Forever...
Got my first, an Amiga 1000, in early 1986.  It came with both KS/WB 1.0 and 1.1 diskettes, as well as Kaleidescope and a demo disk.  Joined the Philadelphia Amiga Users Group, which was right in the backyard of Commodore (West Chester).  Upgraded to an A2000, but kept the A1000 (bought back the keyboard promo).  Became Newsletter Editor for PAUG until about 1992.  Packed my Amigas away in 1995.  Then came back in 2005 with Amiga Forever.  Set up an Amithlon machine in 2006.  Got an A500 and A1200.  Set up an AROS machine in 2010.  Power up my classics every once in a while to keep the clock batteries charged and for nostalgia.  Use AROS most out of all my Amigas now.

How could one have lived in 1987 and not want an Amiga? I had to wait for about a year until I got my Amiga 500. It was 1100DM back then (which would be about $600 today, I think). I still love a couple of things about it. When Tomb Raider filled the shelves in the 90s however I didn´t believe in the future of the Amiga.
I don´t believe in a commercial comeback today, but a few oldtimers more will come back in one way or another, just like some of us. Some are driven by CUSA some will digg AROS some want the X1000. We should welcome all of them.

Over 100 votes in less than a day, not bad.  Less than 4% Newbies, which is understandable and over 75% are in the Forever and Old Timers categories, which was to be expected around these parts.

I Bought my first Amigas this year, in february.
I had an Atari 520ST when i was a kid and was actually looking to buy one when i stumpled upon an ad for three amigas. It was hard to find any Ataris for sale so I thought "Why not, I never used an Amiga before".

So I bought two A500 and a A600 as a package together with some books, a genlock, 3 external disk drives, a handheld scanner and some other stuff like cables. Just 100 euros for all!
About a month after I bought two A1200, and an ACA1230 Accelerator.

So I went from zero to five Amigas in about a month =)

No regrets! Oldschool is fun!

Over twenty years easily, i'd been reading about them since the A1000 came out but couldnt afford one.  Then i saw sword of sodan running on a A500 in my local computer shop and that was it, i had to have one.
So i got my first 500 in 88, seems an awful long time ago :)

Now my loft is groaning under the weight of them all !.

I got an Amiga A600 from new at the time.

I got the A500 in 87 and the A1200 in 93 I think. Then I run ZX Spectrum and C64 emulators, reminiscing about the good old times and marveled at the infinite power of the A1200 AGA. Amiga was main rig for ten years. Now the A1200 is the main honorary rig.

Now that you have been using the Classic Amigas for a few months, are you still looking to buy an old Atari, or have you decided that it is more fun to own and use your Amigas to satisfy your retro-computing urges?

I still have my old Atari. But it's just the computer, no cables, no floppy drive, no power supply.

I was thinking that i might try to modify an amiga power suppply, buy a cable to connect to my SCART equipped CRT, and use a floppy emulator with sd-card that i bought for my amigas to get the old Atari running again.

But it would be of no real use to me, the Amiga platform feels much more alive these days than the Atari. So if i do it, it's just because it's doable, I probably wouldn't use it much.

Good Man!  That is what all of us rabid Amiga fans wanted to read.  You can also probably emulate an Atari on one of your A1200's well enough to get your Atari fix, if you can't get the real Atari hardware to run again.

Since the 'get-go' is that what you young people say today. From the beginning is what I meant to say. The family had Amigas from the start and my father was very keen and had several. Don't think there was a member of the family that didn't have an Amiga in the house. Kinda brought us all together under one machine seeings as my sister had been into Atari and I was keen on the Spectrum. We all agreed it was the best computer to have. Still hold that view I guess. But then i would say that.

LOL, I just re-read the survey questions and I realized that I do qualify for the top spot (within the 1st two years of release).  My dad bought my A1000 back in 1986, with an order for the Sidecar (which never materialized).

In 1987, I upgraded to an A2000 via the trade your A1000 for a discounted A2000.

In 1992, I sold the A2000 for an A4000 (Emplant board, Picasso II, etc), which I sold in 1997 for good money.  Looking back, that was a BIG mistake, but I needed the $$$ at the time :(

I still believe that the A4000d was the best laid out machine C= ever built.  It had amazing expansion capabilities (given its size), with the exception of the optical drive (5.25") bay that was a bit too short, running into the PS.

Anyway, I was never a gamer, using the machine for business apps, programming and some 3D/video editing work.
