Title: Back Again :)
Post by: Mark_1200 on May 16, 2011, 08:24:41 AM
Hi folks...

About 10 years ago I packed away all my Amiga stuff, But now its all back out :)

About my Machine....

Currently setting up my main machine...

Specs.

Amiga 1200 3.1 Roms
Blizzard PPC 603e@240MHz + 040@25MHz
64MB Fast Ram
4GB Solid state HD

So far....

I also have a power tower that im going to put everything into along with

CD Rom Drive
BVision GFX Card
Extra cooling

Im trying to keep it fairly simple so may not use the BVision and may stick with WB3.0 rather than 3.9 :)

The PPC Card seems to be overheating, Now I suspect its the PSU thats causing it as I never had problems before even with it in the standard 1200 case. But Im fairly sure I had a much heavier PSU before, So will dig this out soon.

Also have....

A2000 With 6MB ram, 030@25MHz 250MB HD, CD Rom, Rom 2.04???
CD32
A600 With HD and 1 meg ram expansion
A500 With Action replay + Ram
A500+ With extra ram

Lots of other bits such as sound samplers, printers, monitors, genlock etc :)

Next job for me is to get the PCMCIA network card working, Ill be very happy once thats done :)

About me...

I currently work as a computer programmer for a 3D CAD Company (its good fun too)

I have also worked in Electronics and Robotics as well as being a fully qualified Car Mechanic :)

I used to write a LOT of software on the Amiga, So will certainly be getting back into that once the hardware is ready.

My other passion in life is my Nissan Skyline R33 :)

How was that for an intro ?  :)

Mark.

You call that an intro? Hmmph... *sticks nose up in air*

R33 skyline? Hmmph... *sticks nose in air again*. Personally i prefer the shorter wheelbase of the R32 and R34 myself. R33 is for wussies, nice and safe ;)

Welcome back :)

Ok then lets go over it bit by bit... :)

Putting an Amiga away for 10 years is criminal and with those specs it's a capital offence... :(

However, as you have repented your sins and found your way back to the church of Amiga, gawd (AKA Jay Miner) has forgiven you my son... :)

You have chosen wisely in the path you now take, it will be fraught with danger and perils with temptations to turn once again to the dark side... :(

but rest assured the congregation here will help steer you along the way in your darkest moments and help keep you on the right path... :)

(either that or they'll hurl abuse at you or try and convert you to the obscure and frankly weird cults of AROS or MorphOS, don't be taken in by them they're only after your Amiga...) ;)

As for the rest of it, working for a living... Nah, you don't wanna do that, retire and sponge of the state (highly recommended and lots more fun)... :)

Electronics & Robotics... Hmmm... did you create Piru... :)

Write a lot of software for the Amiga... Hurry up then, I need some new stuff (I'll make a list)... :)

Nissan Skyline R33... Erm... wassat, a skyscraper !!! :)

Welcome back to the fold  and the last church of the one true computer that Amiga.org is... :D

PS:The collection box shall now be passed among you (no buttons please, you know who you are)... :)

Thanks for the welcomes :)

And thanks to franko for his efforts, Without which im sure replacing my broken 3.1 disks would have been rather harder :)

And, For the ones who are unfamiliar with the Nissan Skyline...

The R32 GT-R dominated JTCC, winning all 29 races it entered in the series, as well as taking the series title every year from 1989-1993.

It took 50 races from 50 starts from 1991-1997 (latterly R33) in the N1 Super Taikyu.

And so on....  The latest incarnation, the R35 or GTR (they dropped the skyline name now) has just won the lap of America, so still going good :)

Back on the Amiga front, I just ordered Storm C V4.0 :) Should be fun...

I didnt quite neglect Amiga for 10 years, I have the Cloanto offering, But an emulator just isnt the same...

Welcome back, very nice a1200 you have there.
Car-wise, I'd rather look at the 944 you have in the background :)

Not me. That Nissan would waltz circles around the Porsche.
I've been fond of the Nissan Skyline since I owned a '79 2 door 810.
Great car dude and a remarkable computer system.
Why would you put something like that away?
Do you know how many posters on this forum there are that would kill for a system like that?

I know back in the day it was quite a potent machine, But I honestly had no idea it would still be considered with any regard, Guess I have to treat it nice now or risk the wrath of you lot :)

The reason it went away mainly was me losing touch with the community when I started a business about 10 years ago or so.... Just never had time for it back then and never fetched it back out untill recently.

Coding on the PC lacks soul, its so much more fun on the Amiga...

Its a 1985 924S, which is the 924 body but with the larger Porsche made 2.5 liter inline 4, Its not in fantastic condition as I dont really use it much but its mechanically sound... Im not sure what I will be doing to it, Possibly a full restoration, or maybe Ill just clean it up...

And Iggy is right, the Skyline is significantly faster and better in the corners, But the Porsche is just as much fun....

Ahh, I didn't notice the lack of fender flares initially. The S model looks alot like the 944 i guess.

Performance wise, I'm sure the skyline is better, But I like Porsche's and have a soft spot for the 944's especially. I've owned a 924Turbo, two 944's, and a 911. Currently don't have any, but in the market for a 944 :)

Welcome Back.  I still am trying to figure out how you could put away a miggy with those specs for that long.  I could understand if you had like a 10 year deployment to Iraq or something, but holy smokes.  Well at least you have brought her back out again.  Do me a favor if you ever decide to store her for another 10 yr stint, let me know and I will baby sit her for you :D.  Cheers!!!

Quick update...

Its all back in its power tower, and OS3.9 is installing as I write :)

All the overheating and crashing problems went away when it was plugged into the towers PSU, Also installed but not yet using the BVision.

Just about managed to hook it up to my router too :)
