Title: Project A2000 revamp
Post by: AmigaPixel on May 12, 2011, 08:11:36 AM
Hi All,

Until a couple days ago I had not posted on Amiga.org for over a year, I sneaked a peak or two though in the last few months. Anyway my trusty A2000 I have owned since 1993, is waiting patiently to be revamped. All three 1080 monitors died around the same time so I no longer can see Workbench. I tried using the B/W composite out to a TV but all I get is a scrolling Workbench. At first I thought is was the TV but I tried it on 2 others and got the same results. A bad CIA chip? Plus my keyboard crapped out a long time ago.

I occasionally will turn it on just to listen to it boot up. That classic Amiga hum and click of the floppy drive always brings back a warm feeling. Even with out seeing it boot up I can tell by the sound of he hard drive when Workbench is up. About 2 weeks ago I turned it on and it only partially booted up. I unplugged the power cable to CD Writer and tried again, this time it booted up fully. The CD writer was never actually used, it is an IDE drive I installed but never had a chance to configure before the monitors died.
Needless to say I have my work cut out for me., especially since I am between jobs so I am on a shoestring budget.
The first steps are:
1.   Get a RGB to S-Video/composite adapter, such as the ones Nathan in Australia is making.
2.   The next step is a Lyra keyboard adapter.
3.   Then an ATX PSU with the ATX to A2000 cable adapter. I have a 250watt ATX psu from a HP Pavilion but it might also be failing under load too. (I don’t have a Multi-Meter or ATX tester at the moment, and they would not prove it was failing under load anyway.) I may opt for a Seasonic 300-350watt PSU.

Has anyone tried the ATX PSU’s from AmigaKit? What brand or make are they?

I cleaned the inside out a while back and the battery looked like new. No leaks or corrosion.  Once I am able to use the Amiga, I plan on upgrading to Kickstart and OS 3.1. I currently have OS 2.1 installed. It will be an interesting challenge to configure the CD Writer on the Data flyer IDE channel. The SCSI always worked with out a hitch but years ago I tried to hook a IDE hard drive and failed at getting Workbench to see it. If it doesn’t work I can opt for SCSI CD-writer, but of course I will be bugged by being defeated.

I heve Sony Trinitron monitor sitting on top of the A2000 and I hope to get a S-video to VGA converter or an Indivision ECS. The only concern about the latter is I am not sure if it will fit with the Derringer Platinum 030 board. The Derringer is plugged directly into the 68000 socket and lays parallel and sandwiched between the MB and PSU bracket. Anyway it is a project I have been looking forward to for a long time. Then I finally be able to play with that Video Toaster 4000 I installed just before the monitors died, talk about timming.

I forgot to ask, could the vertical scrolling of the Workbench be the caused by the Denise chip it self going bad? Or is it more isolated to the the chips that control the composite out?
