Title: Microsoft Buys Skype
Post by: gertsy on May 11, 2011, 12:18:28 PM
Interesting move from Microsoft considering MSN Messenger.  Obviously seeing Skype ain't making too much money it must be for the user base.

LOL the end of the world.  Now Arnie will have to become President of the USA so he can tell us all to "Get in da choppa!"

On reading it looks as though they, MS, are going to set up Skype as a whole new business unit.  Bit different for them.  No borging.

@Kesa: U said the 'C' word u gonna get banned.  Drunk or not...

Better Microsoft than Facebook - that prospect frightened me greatly. Strange days we live in.

I guess Microsoft values customer brand adoption/loyalty so much that they bought a profitless company for more than 8 billion.

@KESA  OMG,  SKYNET from the terminator movies, you know the system became self aware on "some date in the past now".  Putting Skype with .NET gives you Sky.NET.  I feel like I'm explaining a Dad joke.  You are pissed and the brain cells are fading mate...

Well, this does seem a little bit of an odd move, considering that (in Ireland anyway) MSN seems to be king of the hill as regards messenging. I guess it's different elsewhere but everyone I come across locally uses MSN, yet most don't have Skype installed. Maybe they just want to merge the two into one massive worldwide messenger network? Seamlessly using MSN and Skype in the one application is somewhat appealing...

Well yes, you cant call normal phones from MSN.   With skype built in  it would be a one-stop communicator

could work pretty well.

I think it depends on who your circle of friends are, most of mine use Skype, I had an MSN ID, but haven't logged into it in a year or two so it's probably gone.  Skype just transitions from chat program to phone dialler so smoothly it's hard to stop using it.

You still believe that nonsense?
Even if it was true, it wouldn't matter as his mother was a US citizen.
Since John McCain was born in Panama, if the country you were born in was important, then neither of the last presidential candidate would have been viable (by your twisted logic).

Seems there is an error in Wikipedia:

Quote from: Wikipedia

Skynet was implemented on April 19, 2011 and began its attack against humanity on April 21.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skynet_(Terminator)#Terminator_2:_Judgment_Day

So the actual date must be May 19th 2011.

At the time McCain was born, the Panama Canal Zone was a US territory (in much the same way as Hong Kong was once a British territory).  He also needed special permission from congress to run for the presidency because he wasn't born in the U.S. proper.

As far as politics is concerned, I'd rather have both Obama and McCain thrown out of the election than to have the situation we have now.  But this is quickly turning into one of those coffeehouse threads that I seldom post to.

Re: Obama's natural citizenship - fact is, he did not receive a traditional lower-48 domestic American upbringing or education and many of his policies and beliefs reflect that. Semantics aside (arguable of course within the legal context), this is what I believe most "on that side" are up in arms about. And they have every right to be as per his anti-American stance on dozens of issues with Capitalism and Socialism being just two examples.

@Kesa - too many examples to cite with many/most of them already being outlined in his book. Feel free to do some research at your leisure just as I did when I needed to be reminded what 'Skype' is

For the record, I think I'm becoming more communist by the day. Screw socialism, may as well go for the gold these days. Yep, pretty sure most people need to be told what to do and have their lives directed by government types. Specially based on voting polls and behaviors the last 20 years or so  ;)

I completely agree.

I am sick and tired of pro-business, pro-capitalist, anti-public health care politicans like Obama ruining this country.

This is irony at its best! You guys are clearly proud of being American at the same time hate the very things it was built upon. Capitalism and Socialism

Actually while we are talking about American stuff can someone tell me the difference between a Republican and a Democrat? I tried reading about it but just got confused.

Since there's only two parties that stand any chance of election, each party is a mix of a bunch of different people.

Broadly speaking:

Democrat:
Socially progressive
Tend to be less pro-big business
Prefer social spending

Republican:
Socially conservative
Tend to be more pro-big business
Prefer military spending.

Beyond that, it gets meaningless, as there are so many factions that are mushed together into two parties.
F.X. Fiscal conservatism, minimal government and oppressing gay people are all important to some parts of the republican party, but not many embody all of them.
Ditto for f.x. universal health care, affirmative action and workers rights for the democrats.

Alternatively, the internet version:
Republicans are all hitler and democrats are all stalin.

You can also be an independent: This generally means you are a republican but don't want to admit you voted for Bush. Alternatively it means you are a hippy who haven't worked a day in your life.

Sounds familar for Aus and UK as well.  Left gets more like the right and right like the left.  The GEC aint Obama's fault, and any politician who isn't trying to please the media and just win another term is better than the alternative.

We've got a PM who got in on a minority vote because of the way our secondary votes work and because the greens sided with her party when she promised them they would introduce a Carbon Tax.  The only reason that minority voted for her was because she was female.  Her party was dead in the water.  But like the western lemmings we are we lapped up the evening media and gave her a go.

You give a side lined soccer player a go, not the potential leader of a country.

And BTW I bet Obama and Gillard use Skype to talk to one another.

PS: Like the way I linked my political commentary into the thread.?  'ja like that ?
