Title: A3000 + CV64/3D issues
Post by: koshman on May 10, 2011, 01:59:36 PM
Hi friends,

I need advice (again...). I recently bought an A3000 on Amibay. The machine is in pretty good condition functionally - it's the 25Mhz version, mobo rev. 8.9, 8MB Fast RAM, some SCSI drives etc. When I received it it had Buster 7.

I have a CV64/3D which I want to use with this Amiga - I put it in, installed CGXv3 and it worked, sort of - I get picture on my LCD, but when I access a HDD or floppy - e.g. open some folders, it restarts with a guru.

I thought this might be a Buster related problem so I ordered a SB11 from Amigakit along with an IC extraction tool. I switched the chips (I also changed the SCSI chip for the latest revision, which I got from LTAC on Amibay) and all works fine stock. But I get the exact same problems when I plug in the CV64/3D.

As I said - the freezing/restarting happens when accessing a drive. It can sit on WB for 30+ minutes without any problems - cursor reacts normally, I can access the top screen menus, show Version info etc. Then I open my HDD icon - the root folder displays ok, but when I want to open any of the subfolders - restart.

What do you think might be the problem? I'm going to try booting from a Buddha or something (when I get it to work...) to leave the internal SCSI out of the equation, but the fact that it also happens with a floppy drive tells me that's probably not the cause.

Btw, there's basically fresh 3.9 on the HDD from the previous owner - the boot drive is an old 540MB SCSI and the secondary drive is even older ~50MB. But they work fine without the Cybervision. I will try a fresh 3.1 too.

Thank you.

CGXv3?  I'd try v4 or even P96 instead.

I got the v3 install disks with the card. But sure I'll try the other newer sw options, for all I know it could be a software issue/incompatibility.

Thanks for advice.

If you still want to try CGX3, check if it's the latest version, like this: http://main.aminet.net/pub/aminet/driver/video/CyberGraphX3.lha

I just installed P96 and everything seems to work just fine in 1024x768 with a little fine tuning. Sorry guys for not doing this in the first place before asking this question. I would never guess it could be just the software to blame here.

Many thanks.

I've always had better luck with P96 as well.

That's been my experience all these years as well. Can't think of a single time where a CGFX install ever went right on legacy hardware for me. When I first heard that was the video driver employed in MorphOS, I thought "oh shit", but all seems to be fine in that environment. Well, gotta have a compatible monitor upon first install (ie: old CRT) or force your hardware to display "compatible" mode before you can go ahead and tweak for use of something more modern that is.

Yes, like utri007, I think you must check your PSU!
