Title: graffiti card what does it do
Post by: amiga4000freak on May 02, 2011, 12:14:57 PM
Individual Computers: Graffiti

Does anyone know what this does and will it improve amiga display?
Also does it act like a scandoubler?

It was mainly a way to provide a chunky screenmode to native chipset amigas.  It was made at a time when Doom was big, and Amiga A1200 accelerators were expensive and no graphics cards for A1200's existed.  It was also useful for providing a 256-color chunky mac screenmode for shapeshifter.  I *think* it  could also show 24 bit pics in 18 bit?

I'm not gonna bid on it , got other stuff I need to get first.

Will be nice to see how much it goes for though.

Not to be confused with the "graffity" which IIRC was an RTG card.

@ amiga4000freak

Dang... up until yesterday it was hovering around the £8 mark and then you went and started this thread... now it's up to £26... :(

Oh well, less than 24 hours to go and then the magical final 30 seconds of bidding frenzy will happen, that me favourite bit on eBay those last few seconds when I've said to meself "no-more" but can't resist that last final bid... :)

Indivision ECS is said to have built-in Graffiti emulation. Anyone ever play around with that? 256 colors out of 4096 without HAM artifacts. So Doom would be the only game to utilize this? No other apps take advantage of it besides Mac emulation and demo's?

There's a specific DOOM build for the Indi but that's all I've heard of thus far.  I'm not sure if it's possible to make the Indi (AGA or ECS) into a full-bore graphics card.

Forgot to post this link that explains just what the Graffiti is and can do... :)

Pretty sure when it was sold it came with demo disk and there was a basic paint program that took advantage of it (can't recall what it was called though and I think it was PD or shareware)... :)

It worked for Nemac iv, Trapped and Gloom (not sure if all versions of Gloom took advantage of it) among others. The software included an AVI/FLI viewer too. As for price, I sold mine a while back for over £40 on ebay in the UK. LMAO, it cost me £18 a few months before I sold it.

Cheers... but it is an auction and there no way to guarantee a winner... ;)

I know the limit of what I'm willing to pay for it so until the last 30 seconds I won't know if I'm going to bid on it again... :)

Noticed someone retracted their bid and it's dropped from £26 to £14...

it seems that the new scandoubler for the A1200 (not done yet) by individual computer will have grafitti built in
also it will features a driver for the workbench...so theoretically a really fast workbench at 256 colors will be possible...much faster than AGA

Is there any benchmarks??? What is real life benefit of graffiti? Would be nice if some body could test gloom/trapped and tell what is difference with graffiti??

Yes Indivision ECS does support Graffiti and not through emulation, it just does it ;)

It is too slow to be of any real use though.

ADoom 1.4 supports the Indivision ECS's direct chunky mode which is not the same thing at all.

And the Indivision AGA Mrk2 will have a nice fast Graffiti mode :)
