Title: NewIcons, GlowIcons, MagicWB Icons .. options for OS3.1
Post by: TheBilgeRat on May 01, 2011, 06:38:42 PM
So, I've played around a bit with MagicWB2 icons for my installs, and don't terribly mind them, but I'm looking for something that looks good and doesn't take up so much real estate on the screen.  Anybody have a favorite icon set they use for 3.1 installs?  Any good recommendations?

I am using Newicons for more than 10 years and i love them.
Don't know much about Glowicons, but i think they are compatible with newicons.

I use these ones, but the full set hasn't been released yet: http://www.amiga.org/forums/showpost.php?p=580318&postcount=1

They're all using a special fixed 16 colour palette which is OCS compatible (it's the perfect Workbench palette) and don't require 3.5/3.9 or NewIcons to be installed. They are based on GlowIcons and Ken's Icons, except their size and colour palette are consistent.

I think Rebel wants to open-source the icons so other people can add to the set, but there's not really anywhere to do that. I think it's a good choice to stick with them though, because there are going to be several applications and games with graphics sets that use the same palette.

If you want to use GlowIcons you will have to purchase the two CDs that they're on. You can find several random, free ones on Aminet or extract them from ClassicWB. Unfortunately they all have their own palettes and are usually a few pixels difference in size so they don't clean up as nicely.

If you want something really small and efficient, there's this other icon set that Rebel and I are working on, they're all small 4-colour icons that work with any palette and load really fast since they're even smaller than the default Workbench icons, but once again we haven't finished it yet and need help: http://www.amiga.org/gallery/images/5087/2_TinyWorkbench.png

NewIcons look alright I guess, but they're just a little outdated. It's still handy to have the program installed though, even if you don't use the icons, since many programs and games you download will have NewIcons icons with them.

Sorry I can't recommend any easy option.

Thanks for the heads up Cammy.  After fiddling around with newIcons for hours, (corrupt images, bad ADFs, ugly as sin) I am back to magicwb.  I could not get those newicons to work for nothing.

This is probably because it conflicts with some of your other patches, you can read more about this in the documentation that follows the newicons package. Especially MCP have some functionality that needs to be disabled.

I agree with Cammy that newicons probably looks a bit outdated now, but I have decided to use these icons on at least one of my Amigas. This is because of nostalgia reasons.

I belive there is some confusion here. First of all, GlowIcons is an icon style and not an icon format. The icon format used by AmigaOS 3.5/3.9 is called ColorIcons. It is possible for AmigaOS 3.5/3.9 to use NewIcons in addition to ColorIcons, but AmigaOS 3.1 and lower can't use ColorIcons.

I do belive there are tools on Aminet that can be used for converting NewIcons to ColorIcons and vice versa.
