So I've read the guide, using HDInstTools I added the "pfs3" version (from l: ) to the filesystem (i.e. rdb) as dos type "PFS\3" (note the adding dialog box originally had "DOS\1" as the dos type which I changed as per guide and version 18 revision 5 which I left unchanged).
I edited my partition to custom type, changed the dos type to "PFS\3", max transfer to "0xFFFE00", buffers to 150 and rebooted. Each time I go back into HDInstTools I see Custom Type but "RESV" shown as the dos type and buffers is reset. Moving into the "DOS Format" dialog when I format it (any way) all I get is "Format failed: object not found".
This leads me to believe the pfs3 file I chose to use in the rdb is corrupt or invalid somehow - and I've installed it fresh at least 3 times. Note that when I used the pfs3 installer it fell over with a missing pfs3ds - a notable bug as someone else documented here (http://www.amiga.org/forums/showpost.php?p=633348&postcount=18) , now although I didn't use pfs3ds I copied the pfs3 file to pfs3ds in order for the installer to succeed which leads me to believe something is wrong with the 68000 builds.
Has anyone actually succeeded in getting this waste of nearly 5 hours of my birthday to actually install correctly on a vanilla A600 without either using the full 5.1 version (not on Aminet it seems) and upgrading via the 5.1 to 5.3 route? I'm thoroughly cheesed off at what should have been a simple job.

Any one? I can't believe I'm the only person who's tried installing this on a stock A600...

Did you press return after each text field? The Amiga GUI gadgets are a bit particular about that.
This is not related to your current issue, but please use 0x1fe00 instead as the max transfer to avoid any future issues.

I have it setup and working on one of my Minimigs, but I used OS3.9s HDToolbox under WinUAE to install it rather than HDInstTools.

I have it on all my Amigas, some done with HDToolBox, some done with HDInstTools. Makes no difference, PFS3 doesn't know what you used. :-)

Did you press return after each text field?
Hallelujah! Thank you so very much. The world of modern OS' has made me oblivious to the estoteric workings of classic Amiga OS widgets!

No prob.. I remember my frustration going the other way in 1996.. I always ended up dismissing dialog boxes in Windows since I grew up with the Amiga and was accustomed to pressing return.
Hope you remembered to use the smaller max transfer size.
