Title: Need help with IDE + CD-ROM and A1200
Post by: dougal on April 24, 2011, 05:23:49 PM
My A1200HD has an IDE cable sticking out of the side near the PCMCIA.

I need to set up an IDE CD-ROM with it but am having trouble.

I have tried different combinations.

Master and Slave and using the first connection and the second.

When i try and find the drive using IDEFix97 is cannot find it. Drive connected and powered.

With some combinations (Slave/Master etc..) the Amiga will refuse to boot up into WB3.1.

I know the connection is there because i can get 3.5" Hard drives to work with no trouble at all using SLAVE. But CD-ROM is giving me hassles.

It might help to know more about your setup, as in, what IDE interface do you have in there? If the cable's connected directly to the internal port, and you already have a hard drive in there, you have to be careful that the cable's not too long, and that the internal hard drive supports a slave drive. If you have some sort of buffered interface, you have to have either a patched scsi.device or a separate device for the interface for using with the CD mountlist...

And I recommend you to use some external power for the cd-rom as that gave me most of the trouble I had installing an IDE cd-rom drive.

Idefix could not find the drive untill I powered it with an external molex cable.

The CD-ROM drive is a standard 5.25 IDE and it is being powered externally.

The internal HD in the Amiga is the factory 176Mb which came with the A1200HD back in 1995 (Or something like that, Its Amiga Technologies not Commodore).

There is no buffered IDE as far as i know. I cannot give any more info right now as i am at work, but I'll take a look when i get home and post.

I would imagine that the internal HD does indeed support a slave drive as i successfully managed to use an IDE hard drive externally on that very same cable that i am trying to use the CD-ROM drive from.

Hmmm... I see... Well, it could be down to the interface of the CD drive putting more of a strain on the bus than the hard drive you got to work, and not showing up as a result. What you could do is make a boot floppy with the demo of IDEFix on it, disconnect the hard drive to just leave the CD drive attached, and see if the device snooper can find it then. Even though other drives worked, there's no guarantee that this drive plays nice with that hard drive, or isn't straining the bus...
