At the risk of starting another shitstorm...
Now the website says late may early june delivery for the 3 products they are apparently taking pre-orders for.
http://www.commodoreusa.net/CUSA_Store.aspx
Another delay. Said mid april before. I can't wait to see the 30 million dollar ad campaign on airing on "major networks". Was supposed to air last christmas, but then these computers were supposed to start selling a year ago, or well, that was other computers then.
I'm going to go buy a tron dvd. I was buying one soon anyway, I'm curious to see if the compusa ad is in all dvds or if they just paid to have their warez peddled in a very small number of dvds.
Maybe someone from there will clarify, were the ads in every tron legacy dvd, or just some of them?
No one from CUSA clarified yet if they have permission to use the tron legacy footage in their ad, or just used it without permission yet.
I think Franko reported them to disney. Thats funny.
Steven
-
They can't even deliver products that they aren't manufacturing on time.
On launch, the Vic models said they would be delivered in three weeks.
All the hype generated by the Tron DVD will be long forgotten by the time they actually have products ready to ship.
-
did the tv ad air at all? i have not seen on the tv yet...
-
*golf clap*
-
What is the production capacity of a single 3D printer?
-
Its like having a t-shirt printing business with only one heat press. Sure, you can make thousands of shirts, but its going to take forever.

from the official Disney TRON website:
http://disney.go.com/tron/index_flash.html#/partners
-
yes that means you bought a spot to have your printed ad included in a dvd case. It dosn't mean they gave you permission to use their movie footage in an ad for your computer, or on your website.
And NO the ad has not been seen anwhere but their own website yet.

It Disney wurk like rat... :)
Oh joy... another thread where "they who shall remain nameless" crops up (yet again)... :(
Wonder what drivel I can post in here, been a bit bored lately so this should liven things up a wee bit... ;)
In the meantime, lets just say...
Wibble... :D

Come on Franko, you can do better than that!

Several days ago an update was written outlining the current status of the 64x. It's worth a read.

Oh good... Barry boys back... wassa matter Barry old bean not enough pre orders to keep you busy running you wee business and so you have to revert to Amiga forums for something to do, even though we are not your target market...
Notice you were to busy to appear on Amiga Round Table when invited, not got the bottle too speak live to your critics, I'd have thought you'd have plenty of time to appear as you don't seem to be actually producing anything other than hot air... ;)
-
That was worth a read, especially this :
"Motorola believes the C64x mold is progressing well and getting completed in a week or two."
"I think it will be a moving experience to see the C64 coming down the conveyor belt like in the old days. "
1) Now they are saying motorola is making the cases?
2) Do they even HAVE an assembly line?
Leo is funny. I wonder if the stickers fell off his commodore pc yet.

I believe that it may have been a typo. Our very own "Motorollin" pre-ordered a C64x so he automatically became the "Director of Production". He was then mailed a 3D printer and is now busy in his bedroom churning out hundreds and thousands of cases. Well, he's actually been at it for a week and has 21 cases so far (minus the one he stepped on). The bad news is that Office Depot ran out of the "Diarrhea Brown" shade of printer plastic so he's having to make do with "Bile Green" instead.

Barry's just putting the Motorola name up there to see who owns the name....

Well they have the ability and claim a 1 to 25 work day prototype production.

I suppose I just don't understand hyping a product for a year and THEN figuring out how to make them, or how the parts will be manufactured.
Seems like the chicken before the egg dosn't it?
Wait we're taking pre-orders and we don't even have the parts here yet?

But you don't understand! Barry is a Real Businessman! Didn't you hear about all the money he's put into this? What more do you need for a project like this than money!? Just have faith and those cases will manifest themselves out of thin air through the sheer power of CASH!

Yep, it is worrying when they're still talking prototypes and "tweaking" designs.
Worse still, as the delay to production continues, how many people who pre-order will get "buyer's remorse" and cancel and how many people who initially got caught up with the excitement of seeing a retro C64 case design will now ask themselves "well, do I really need one?"
Having done sales myself, you need to excite the customer and then wrap up the deal immediately, and not ask them to wait 3 months. It isn't like it is a Minimig or something that you can't buy elsewhere. This is a PC and you can buy them anywhere. Things need to move faster and in hindsight, the advertising should have been held back a month or two (however, that probably wasn't possible because of the TRON DVD release date).

It's the Amiga way!

Although other projects discussed on Amiga.org and AW haven't exactly "broadcasted" it, the problems overseas have caused parts delays. I have no knowledge of whether this affects the C64x in any way, just saying...
There are many good news articles on this topic. You can hardly find an article without also encountering the word "resin" either.

What problems overseas ??? and which seas are we talking about here, the Black Sea, the Red Sea, the I Can't Sea... :)
They're probably shipping the parts from Atlantis along with the fabled Amiga range... :)
"Good news articles" !!! have you read half of them, written by so called journalists who claim things like "The original C64 is back", "Barry Altman has bought Commodore", "The C64 makes its real comeback since it was first introduced in 1992"... WTF !!!
Most of these journos are too young and have no idea what they are talking about when it comes to Commodore & the C64 other than googling for a few tit bits...
The best news will be when the headlines read "Barry Altman & CUSA head offshore to escape angry crowd who paid up front in pre-orders scam"... :D
PS:The epic fail when it comes will of course be placed on Mocchie who we all know is the real brains behind the operation... :)

Heh. All I'm getting at here Franko is the misconception that China makes everything.
Recent events in Japan are the source of many delays.

Ah, but they won't need to head offshore to escape the angry mob, they just need to head to the lawyer and disolve the company.
"Commodore USA" is actually "Commodore USA LLC" and it is the "LLC" part which is very important because it stands for "Limited Liability Company". What it means is that if the company does something "wrong", then you can only sue the company and the company assets for compensation, and not the actual company owner and his personal assets. So, if the company becomes bankrupt or has no assets then you're SOL.
How do I know this? Because my company is a LLC too. :D

Heh. Let's face it Darrin. In the grand scheme of electronics, none of our motley crew gets to stand at the head of the line when parts are ordered. Throw in a natural disaster and that just pushes us further back in line, since the big boys will have the pull to get their supply lines restored 1st.

Oh, I agree. When it comes to "ordering in bulk", we're not exactly fufilling the market that the majority of supply companies have in mind. "First come first served doesn't exist", it is more "richest company first, peons to the back of the line". :D

So Franko, what was Disney's response to your report of CUSA misappropriating clips from Tron Legacy for use in their ads? Did they send Mickey Mouse out to do the hit?

Disney's naff response that they send you automatically on receipt of any email you send them is...

Thank you for your e-mail.

According to Leo :
All the other parts are ready and waiting to go, and then the assembly, testing and packaging fun begins.
-
I look forward to the going out of business sale.
-
Yeah, they need to get product out ASAP. The longer they delay the more chance customers will come to the conclusion that they've bought a screenless netbook for US$600. This is a purchase that just doesn't look good in retrospect. You don't want to give people a chance to think about it too long.
-
I look forward to the going out of business sale.
I'll join you, I could do with some cases! Best part about the whole thing......
You can indeed argue that 'At least someone is releasing something in the Commodore / Amiga name'....but if the product is a load of fucking crap what is the point? To bury the brand forever?
-
I think when C= USA hits the multiple-years delays that everything Amiga related* has had in the last 17 years, then you can throw stones.
*=except for Jens' excellent products, of course.

In Australia it's a little different. A company that is Limited means a limited number of shareholders that company can have. But i think you are talking about Incorporation which means a company becoming its own legal entity therefore removing any liability from its owners. This is effective that it protects its owners from liability but it works only to a certain point, it must be lawful. Remember Barry is a director of a company so if he makes a profit and the coy goes into liquidation he might still be liable. Maybe you could get him on fraud or oppressive behaviour as a director? Whatever, but you could maybe get him on criminal charges and not just civil. My point is that if you can show he is dishonest then the LLC means nothing. If this happens in Australia, and he is liable, then they simply brush aside any limited liability. Not sure how it works in America though. Please tell... :)
P.S. what coy do you own, i wanta looky :)

I'm pretty sure it means a limited number of shares. Which is pretty simular, but different.
I remember when Sinclair brought out the ZX Spectrum and QL they took postal orders and got themselves in a little bit of bother with delays.
I tend to agree with Franko's summary though: Wibble! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MK6TXMsvgQg

But Sony had already delivered a total of 200 million PS1 & PS2 products and their past followers needed to be kept up to date about Sony's alternative to Xbox 360 to stop people jumping ship.
Bit of a difference here.
-
Firstly I like to congratulate everyone on the fact that C=USA related threads and discussion have gone down to sensible numbers and not taken over the web forum, I have no problem with seeing the odd thread to discuss this company and its plans I just dont want to see a repeat of every other thread discussing them.
Secondly I recently got Tron Legacy and Tron Classic on Blu-Ray here in the UK, no CUSA advert inside, so I'm guessing it just a USA thing.
Thirdly I find it all rather funny C=USA, I remember a lot of their supporters criticising A-eon / Hyperion for Pre-orders/Beta funds and pro-claim their company has never ask for a dime, well now they are, plus another delay a bit like another project, so less reason for them criticising us, and the fact they made a big deal about watching Amiga Inc web site for the announcement of their deal/partnership, and now I go on their web site they seem to be selling/promoting Icontain products more than C=USA's after all that talk of “we are Amiga inc now” its all great pop corn material and I'm just enjoying the ride while I wait for progress in areas of the Amiga world that really interest me.

Whats with all the US and THEM references?
It's like a Commodore/Amiga fan civil war. Can't people just accept that everyone against C=USA loves Commodore 64's and Amigas and everyone with C=USE loves Commodore 64s and Amigas but they want to show it in a different way.
It doesn't hurt anyone here if somebody wants their PC to look like a classic computer does it?

For some reason it's grating me.. I keep think what's a kidding and who does it really belong to?
Tell me you're kidding... I mean you are kidding, right... you've got to be kidding about not liking the word kidding !!!
Only kidding... :)
Best not visit the UK without ear plugs any time, cos you'll here that word every where you go (even in the houses of parliament where MPs accuse each other of kidding on to the public) and I ain't kidding... :)
The only other alternative for it is "joking" but for some reason most folk here prefer to say kidding, like when you meet someone you haven't met for a while and they ask you how the wife is and you say "oh she died a few months ago", then when you get the stoney silence and humble apologies you then say "only kidding, the old bags over there getting her hair done again"... :)
Crops up all the time the kidding word and it's not that bad really, could be worse could be replaced with "you're avin a larf" gets right on me tits that one does... :madashell:
Oh yeah... Only kidding... ;)
-
Franko I'm sure I have seen Kidding used in US films and TV shows. I can hear someone like Bruce Willis saying "U Godda be kiddin' me" in my head
I think the main problem is the mis-spelling of You're which changes kidding from a verb to a noun
-
It doesn't hurt anyone here if somebody wants their PC to look like a classic computer does it?
It does when for about the past 8 months it's been force fed down yer throat that these were going to be the new official Commodore C64s & Amigas running Workbench, OS5 and the like and being told to like it or lump it by them.. :(
Was there any need for all those months of blatant gobshite by them trying to pass themselves off as the saviour of us all and delivering the real deal, not just some emulator in a crappy box... :madashell:
What was the point in antagonising so many folk with this BS about Workbench etc... only for them to never use it in the end... :madashell:
It may not hurt, but it sure as hell pissed a lot of folk off the rattling of gums by Barry, Leo & Dammy for all these months only for them to do a u-turn and finally admit on there website that they are nothing more than PCs running emulators, what was the friggin point in it all... :madashell:

All though I see the validity of your other points and how they can irritate I must say that most of the news and information about C= USA that I have read was by people complaining about them on here.
I bet nobody complaining on this thread has preordered or intends to preorder one of the new commodore shaped PC's so this delay does not affect us (the non ordering posters) in any way. Yet everyone is jumping into the thread, keeping it at the top and providing advertisements for C=USA.
My main point is let them get on with it. There's much worse going on in the world than some guys making a PC that looks like a commodore.
.....as it's good friday I am spreading peace and love
-
At the risk of starting another shitstorm...
Now the website says late may early june delivery for the 3 products they are apparently taking pre-orders for.
http://www.commodoreusa.net/CUSA_Store.aspx
The Vic series was being shipped to end user via China, I have a feeling the initial batch was sold out and that is the reason why there are now delays until June for those AIO systems. For the C64x, the early pre-orders should be getting them in early May. First mold is very close to being finished, probably next week. Once that is done (acid wash and final inspections are completed), it goes to the company to begin injection molding the case which are given to the assemblers, which are all in southern Florida.
Another delay. Said mid april before. I can't wait to see the 30 million dollar ad campaign on airing on "major networks". Was supposed to air last christmas, but then these computers were supposed to start selling a year ago, or well, that was other computers then.
You think they would have told Disney no and gone with production early? I don't think so. $30M is spread over 5 years so that's $6M @ year, including cost of the advertising agency, production costs, and finally air time.
Should be in everyone during the co-branding period. Also, Disney does not take money for advertising with their products. They are too huge to do something like that, it's all about them.
No one from CUSA clarified yet if they have permission to use the tron legacy footage in their ad, or just used it without permission yet.
Everything released has to be pre-approved by Disney. I've seen a TV ad that was knocked down by Disney.
I think Franko reported them to disney. Thats funny.
Steven
Didn't Franko have his own Disney/C=USA Youtube video out? Oh, I doubt it's still up.
-
All though I see the validity of your other points and how they can irritate I must say that most of the news and information about C= USA that I have read was by people complaining about them on here.
Theres much worse going on in the world than some guys making a PC that looks like a commodore.
.....as it's good friday I am spreading peace and love
Wot... then we'd have to go back to arguing about AROS, MorphOS, PPC or not PPC and all that other malarky, best to keep the negative stuff aimed towards an outsider like "they who shall not be mentioned" and make it at least look like we can all agree (a wee bit) with each other about somthing in Amigaland... ;)
PS:what's so ruddy well good about this Friday, have you looked out the window... Can't see any more that 20 feet right now cos of all the fog/mist and it's bloody freezing, what happened to global warming... it's in reverse here right now... mumble, grumble, pah... :(

Gawd... Dammy your about 2 weeks to late posting that news as you know fine well wittle Barry complained and had it removed on of all things copyright grounds...
Still I've got a nice new one in the wings that neither Disney or your lot will be able to have removed this time... :)
In the meantime there's always this for you to watch... :D

It's getting better as the day goes on. It must be heading north so you should be able to see soon.
It's more smoggy than foggy at the moment.

Ah... at last some good news in a CUSA thread... :)
Quite handy having you around, kinda like having me own personal weather forecaster, wish it would hurry up and get here though I keep waiting for a ghost ship to appear out of the fog and some mad glowing ghostly pirates to hack me head off again...

There is indeed - but you slap the douchebag you have, not the one you want. CUSA and their army of zealots have been getting up in our faces for the larger part of a year now, and this is just a bit cathartic.
Also, Disney does not take money for advertising with their products. They are too huge to do something like that, it's all about them.
Yes, so we've gathered. Disney is High and Holy and too noble for cheap hucksterism, (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Disney_direct-to-video_films) and they don't use such grubby tokens of value as money, which is why CUSA's lauded advertising budget is sitting safe and secure in a vault somewhere and the entire "co-branding agreement" doubtless consisted of an impassioned plea by Barry Altman that was so moving as to bring the board of directors to tears...

Bugger... :(
Do you have any relatives to the north, east & west of me that I could contact on days when the weather is coming from those directions... :D

Sadly no I do not. I am the most northerly person I know.
I shall hang my head in shame for letting you down

Yeah me too. What happened to delay the release? Was it true that the new batch of SID chips was radiated and had to be sent back to Japan ?
The pain of not knowing. Has 008 been uncovered?
-
The Vic series was being shipped to end user via China, I have a feeling the initial batch was sold out and that is the reason why there are now delays until June for those AIO systems.
So basically you have no idea, but you're willing to make up any excuse you can think of.
For the C64x, the early pre-orders should be getting them in early May. First mold is very close to being finished, probably next week. Once that is done (acid wash and final inspections are completed), it goes to the company to begin injection molding the case which are given to the assemblers, which are all in southern Florida.
The first mold has been very close to being finished for about a month now.
-
They haven't made the first mold yet?
So whats the mold in their "prototype" just a c64 case from ebay?
Thats funny!
Steven

I'm going to go buy a tron dvd.
But.. but.. the movie sucks. Buy beer instead.

@Dammy
Randy,
I'm not sure the roles are clearly defined. It's just fine to have PR people and fans. Heck you need both. But the problem to me arises when I don't know who's speaking for the company.
As a fan, you said "I suspect you will be able to buy the C64x in the local (USA) big box retail store sooner then pre-orders will get theirs. The big box store ordered first after all."
April 6, 2011 (http://moobunny.dreamhosters.com/cgi/mbmessage.pl/amiga/189239.shtml)
Then Leo, as a spokesperson said "Delivery should be between late May and early June, and they'll be shipped according to order placement as soon they're built."
A few days ago (http://www.commodore-amiga.org/forum/27-commodore-usa/3380-re-c64x?lang=en#3399)
Now today you say "For the C64x, the early pre-orders should be getting them in early May."
Even for someone who reads as much as I do and tries to follow the story, this gets confusing. Someone seeing this from "outside" might find it more confusing.
In just these few sentences alone, I left to wonder
(1)whether the big box order is getting product first or the website preorders.
(2)whether shipment to one or the other is in early May or late May/early June.
I just think it's in the best interest of the company to have a little discussion to clarify your schedule before posting what seems to be slightly different information.
I understand that you are a start up. That's great. I accept that. I also accept that schedules change. We've seen that throughout Amigaland, particularly with small projects. The problem, Dammy, is that people are expecting more cohesion coming out of C=USA due to the way they have presented themselves initially.
I'm impressed by the partnership and press coverage, don't get me wrong. But you need to follow that up with public information/relations of the same calibur.

I think thats a large part of why people keep knocking them.
Once, they said all their computers would come with aros pre-installed.
Next, they trash AROS as not commercially viable.
Next they announce "commodore os" which will be ubuntu with a commodore wallpaper, but hey it takes a long time to come up with a nice commodore wallpaper, so it won't be included with our computers just yet.
There is also all the computers they announced then never delivered on.
I've counted about 6 so far that dissapeared with no further explanation after all that hype. Plus all the fake prototype pictures and so on.
They really do need to get their story straight.
If you don't want to get trashed, don't make it so easy for people to do
so. Alot of the resentment against them they generated by these things.
There is also the fact that they are doing the least work possible while expecting the most attention. Anyone can slap a sticker on an existing product, and I'd venture to say anyone with decent computer hobby skills can make their own pc in a c64 case for 1/2 the price they ask.
I think AROS/MorpOS and yes even os4 is worthy of alot more attention.
Imagine the work hours that have gone in to each project.
Also Netami, minimig and others, have all done 25X the work into their respective projects. None of these people are claiming to be the saviors of the sacred name. :)

This is basically it, for me. People can snob all they want about how NatAmi and the like will never be a commercial success or a serious market contender (because that's totally what matters,) but most Amiga-community projects have involved way more blood, sweat, and tears for way more creative ideas and made far less of a hullaballoo about themselves. Proof once again that the people that toot their own horns the loudest are the ones who'd get nothing but silence otherwise...

The Commodore Wars 2011:
The Allies: Very expensive custom machines that look like PC's running real Amiga OS
The Dictators: Affordable PC's that look like a commodore with a false Amiga OS
both with promises of releases, both with annoying delays.
The Dream an affordable custom machine that looks like a commodore/amiga and runs real Amiga OS
-
@ haywirepc
You left one out, Haywire: they want nothing to do with the Amiga community, we're not they're core demographic, and yet they still hang around on this and other Amiga forums anyway.
Truth be told, they're "Indiana Jonesing" this whole thing. IOW: "making it up as they go..."

I would like to know how a guy that deals in bathroom fixtures can up and decide he wants to sell crap PCs inside C64 cases?
Although he has an F rating from the Better Business Bureau, clearly such an individual should be capable of bringing something like the Commodore OS to fruition. I mean after all selling toilets and sinks is tough business!
http://www.bbb.org/south-east-florida/business-reviews/bathroom-fixtures-and-accessories-retailing/homecraft-in-fort-lauderdale-fl-23006396
Anyone who buys from this guy is an idiot. A fool and his money are soon parted indeed...

Takes an awful lot to make most people complain to the better business beureau too. I wonder how many other people got ripped off and didn't bother to complain. An F rating with the bbb is really bad for business.
Maybe he can't keep hocking furniture, so he decided to do CUSA instead.

Sometimes I find it hard not to like Barry, he installed Satellite TV receivers and owns a furniture store. His house is ordinary. This is his one last attempt to make a mark on the IT world. He likely won't make it, but you know he could have just settled back and enjoyed his life on the beach and the money coming from the furniture store, but instead he bet the farm on one last go. He got to be big shot talking to these humungous Chinese manufacturing facilities. He a bit forrest gump....

I feel a little bit the same way, but mostly I like the contrast between what Barry has accomplished in just one year as compared to Hyperion & Co. over the last ten.
It was such a no-brainer. License the Commodore name, license the Amiga name, drop a little on advertising. Use social media sites. Actually use your own website to promote your product. Even if the TV ads never appear more people have heard about this new "Commodore" than have ever heard of Hyperion, their partners, and their products.
Now how difficult was that?
-

Im not a Hyperion fan but lets keep in mind that Hyperion has managed to ship product and so far CUSA havent.

Im all for C=USA and hope them the best of luck. If products start to roll out and people start reporting on recieving produts then I will definately place an order. I just hold back a bit on parting with my money ever since bill and company did the pre-order and get free t-shirts crap.
