If you use WinUAE (exclusively, you have no Amiga hardware) what do you use WinUAE for?
Well, I do have a couple A2000s and A500s in storage (the A2000s need some restoration), but I use WinUAE almost exclusively. A lot of it is for productivity work.
1) music composing: Bars & Pipes, OctaMED, SoundFX
2) graphics: ImageFX, DPaint, Brilliance
3) 3d rendering: Aladdin4d, Lightwave
4) game playing: anything really
For graphics work WinUAE blows away any real Amiga I've owned because I can work in super hi-res (1920x1080) and it's much, much faster at rendering effects/frames than the 68040 I had. Also I can configure a "virtual Amiga" with 1GB of RAM, etc.
Another great thing about WinUAE is I can setup multiple "virtual Amigas" so I can have a OS3.9 "modern classic" system and another OCS WB1.3 system, a KS2.05 system, etc...etc...etc...
This is very useful for very old applications or games that choke on different versions of the chipset/OS.
The last great thing is that I can have a shared folder between Windows and AmigaOS....so for example, I can save a graphics from ImageFX, flip over to Windows with a mouseclick and load it into a Windows application or vice-versa.

Oops - I misread

you forgot one option....
() Don't use it
-
Use it for games. I perform data recovery with Amiga Explorer :)

No, I didn't forget that option, I just don't give a damn what people who don't use WinUAE don't use it for.
-
When I didn't have an amiga, I used it for games primarily.
Two gamepads hooked up to the PC and a lot of two player fun was had :)
(it was UAE, rather than winUAE but eh, same deal)
A bit of demo watching too. Mods was easier using... well, I forget the name of the app I used.
-
I just use for some quick tests, data recovery..
I dont use too much, but annyway.. If you dont have any Real Amiga, or haved the Amiga, but dont wanted use anymore, its a cool way for stay in Amiga.
-
I have a couple of Amigas: an old fairly stock A1000 and an A2000 040. I also use AmiKit (which uses AUE) to make some of the older graphics and 3D programs fly, and have MUCH better display options. I also still use Pagestream (GREAT program!) but I will soon upgrade that to the Windows version.

yeah, the emulation is extremely accurate nowadays. Quite enjoyable and pretty cheap of course :) (Cost of ROM's basically)
I did find that occasionally a given game would be a little more finicky. F.x. the version of Turrican 2 I had required a 1.3 kickstart.
But when I wrote the same ADF to floppies, it runs fine on my 1200.

If you use WinUAE (exclusively, you have no Amiga hardware) what do you use WinUAE for?
Hi,
I use it basically to save my Amiga Hardware, I have all my disk database's on their, all my manual database's and my home inventory database on the Amiga. I use WinUAE to check and look for stuff in the databases, I also use it to input stuff into the database, the only thing I use a regular Amiga for is to transfer the stuff from my WinUAE database's to the Amiga, usually by floppy.
I also use WinUAE for playing games and trying out other or new programs. I am one of the lucky ones where I can also use a new Lexmark or HP printer with my WinUAE, my old Amiga doesn't even see it since they are USB printers.
One of the nice things about WinUAE is that I can use USB thumb drives and USB items. I can also boot up in CD-32 mode or just about any mode, operating system I want, I can listen to my music library (modern day mp3) or mods. I also can view my picture library.
I use Ibrowse for surfing the net, mostly Amiga sites, to tell you the truth, it is like having a modern up to date Amiga for only the price of Cloanto's Amiga Forever. For the price (and I don't care what any of you Amiga Fan boy religious Hippocrates's say (my original Amiga 1000 was down in the 4 number zone) I am an Amiga user and I say Cloanto's Amiga Forever has done right by me. It is a very up to date, super fast system, and I likes it and it was very in expensive. What more can you ask for?

Hi Smerf... :)
Hmmm... odd that your saving your Amiga Hardware... for what... ???
Is it to hand down to your grandchildren when you finally snuff it and go to meet the great guru meditation in the sky... !!!
Seems a waste of perfectly good miggie hardware to me, send it over here and I'll put it to good use instead of gathering dust never to be used again... :)
Point is... how can you claim to be an "Amiga user" when you don't use Amigas... :(
Perhaps "Amiga collector" or "Amiga Storage man" or "Amiga emulator user" might be a more apt way to describe yourself... ;)
Cheers
Franko
PS:An Amiga's just like a pet, it needs love and attention, not left in some dark cupboard pining away at the neglect of it's owner, get your miggies out or I'm calling the protection agencies... ;)
-
And you've forgotten us UAE users on Mac (and Linux where UAE began).
-
Hi,
@Franko,
My Amiga 4000 sits right next to my PC that runs WinUAE, I use WinUAE more today because I really would like to save the old Miggy for down the road, I use it about two to three times a week. Now I also have an A1200 in a tower that sits on the floor, I use this quite often, (A1200 are still relatively cheap and finding one is usually no problem). Probably before I expire (hopefully before the A4000) I will probably put it up for auction on ebay. Why don't I use it, well basically she is rather old, can't surf the web, and the only thing she is good for is playing games and storing my data, which she does quite well since I have lost no data since I bought her. Can't see making her work anymore because I have a cheap and replaceable PC to do that.

PS At least I ain't like the other beggars who have switched to a MAC. (UGH!)
-
If I had the space I would definitely have my A2000 set up next to my WinUAE machine (and also set up my A500, VIC-20, C64, Atari, Intellivision, Colecovision, PONG, Vectrex, etc...oh and eventually a Natami). :-)
-
I usually just tinker - it's very interesting to run apps like PPaint and Photogenics at lightning speeds.
I also play the odd game - F/A-18 Interceptor and Birds of Prey run very well!
Mike.

The last time I had a WinUAE system configured, I set it up with uaegfx p96 drivers and ran Quake at 1024x768 and got an average of like 45fps! :D (I had "fastest possible" checked for CPU speed emulation :) )
-
Can't vote. I don't have a Windows box any more. I just use E-UAE on my Mac.
-
Play a few games but now i am starting to experiment with different configs and such before i put the on my real Amiga's.
-
If the question covered MAcs and EUAE I would say I use E-UAE pretty much as I would a non-virtual Amiga. It's neater, faster and doesn't require special monitors or other equipment. I find for every time I fire up a non-virtual Amiga I fire up a virtual one twice or thrice.

"Amiga Storage man"

When I had to use WinUAE for a while as my stuff was in transit between continents it was pretty much games and demos only.
There are fantastic MOD players on PC that even improve the sample quality and add a nice spatial stereo to the channel 1,3 and 2,4 hard split so it's actually nice listening to them on my PC anyway.
-
I mostly use WinUAE to check new AGA-demos after a party is held, occasionally playing some games. As for why I use WinUAE instead of a real Amiga.. well simply put, WinUAE is better in every imaginable aspect than the real deal.

Strange... I would have never have thought that the amount of time it takes for a PC to boot up then run the emulator could ever be described as being "better" than the ultra quick in comparison time of booting up a real Amiga... very strange claim indeed...
-
I use winuae to play amiga games and cd32 games
also I use my epson printer on winuae and Turboprint 7
sometimes I use amirc for IRC also sometimes download something from aminet using ibrowse
I use simplemail for an account I have on gmail
I still have my A1200 and a 020/28mhz turboboard which I almost never switch on

800% floppy read speed setting comes in handy mind, some of the multidisk games are almost as playable as their Sega/Nintendo cousins if the game supports 2 or more drives though :roflmao:

My pc is running from the second I arrive from work to last second before I go to sleep. I do one boot a day which takes 30 seconds.

Graphic Design, I make my gif animations under WinUAE, drawing the frames with Personal Paint, also I make the PNG icons, but the best is to make the gif animations.
-
I currently don't have WinUAE installed. Used for a while when my A1200 mobo was broken, but after getting another one, I don't have much use for it anymore. Because I have an A1200 setup (14+ years now), I see no reason to use WinUAE. If something is slow (Adpro), I'll just wait a while, or do it on my peecee.

Hey all you eUAE guys - don't be shy! Just mentally substitute your favorite prefix in front of UAE and vote away!

Productivity
And that meaning I use it for setting up OS'es on real Amiga hd's or cf's, it's also to test things.
I use Winuae for this only, if I want to play or watch demo's there about 30 Amiga's at my hand.
-
I'm only using it to setup hard drives faster and eventually backup some datas with USB between my computers. I use Amikit for that.
-

OR, just run the Windows version for an average of 140fps! :)
-
None of the options apply to me. I do use it occasionally for transferring data to my actual Amiga, but for anything AGA I prefer my a1200, and for anything system friendly Amithlon runs rings around (Win)UAE.

Ok. I run old games mostly on E-UAE. Secondly, I run AmosPro for productivity but seldom actually write any code except to test concepts for viability. My last AmosPro program was a text scroller with a half-twist in it.
