Title: A4K New OS - Drivers etc
Post by: LordSpunky on April 10, 2011, 09:39:58 PM
Hi chaps, I am confused to what to do.
My A4K is running WK3.0 with 3.0ROM's. I want to put WK3.1 so I can have a Deneb USB [Yes I give in!], in an ideal world I would get an Amigakit 4GB CF HDD and just install WK3.1 [Can I do this with 3.0 ROM's?]
But what about all the drivers and things that is installed on the current HDD? I can move them across? I don't have any software with it, none for the Cyberstorm / CD-ROM / Picasso / CD32 Em etc.......I don't want to install the new OS and then things don't work, but on the other hand it doesn't 'feel' like my computer I wanna WHDLoad it like I have my A1200 and have some fun...........however my wife just looked over my shoulder and said no....that means no to the deneb and CFHDD.......doesn't she realise it will soon be my birthday! ;) - Additional, Amigakit want something like £30+ for a USB - Ethernet adaptor is there anything special about them? I can find them for less then £10 on ebay!

Thanks x

The differences between 3.0 and 3.1 are small enough that you could probably just do a clean 3.1 install onto a separate partition then copy the files directly over the top your 3.0 (having backed it up first).

That would be very handy, the previous owner had lots of bits and bobs setup that I don't want to loose.

If you do take this route, be sure to re-apply any changes to the S:startup-sequence and S:user-startup sequence files. As I say, back the working 3.0 partition up first.

Ok I think I follow, AOS3.1 with 3.0 Roms okay?......it is either that or the Amigakit A4000T 3.1Roms, but then I need to check I have the magic file (which name escapes me tonight).......if I got a CF HDD I would be taking the old 3.0 HDD out, so it will be save.

You can certainly run Workbench 3.1 on Kickstart 3.0 (probably a few gotchas waiting in there for you in doing so), but I wouldn't recommend using Workbench 3.1 without Kickstart 3.1, especially if is needed to support a piece of hardware is said to require "3.1".

If you are going to get a Deneb then you don't need a physical 3.1 ROM, as you can have Kickstart 3.1 running directly from the Flash on the Deneb.

Installing 3.9 over the top of your existing Workbench 3.0 is your best bet, or even just Workbench 3.1 can be installed in the same way.

I bought a USB Ethernet dongle for about £3 IIRC just a few months ago.

I've got my A4000 in pieces atm, waiting to be setup properly with my Picasso IV, Cyberstorm 060 Mk2, Deneb + USB Ethernet all running from a 4GB SDCard connected to a IDE to SCSI adapter on the Cyberstorm SCSI card.

Once I've got it all set up nicely I can send you an archive of the SYS: partition if you want?

I've got bugger all free time atm so it'll be a couple of weeks at least before it's up and running though.

When you get your Deneb you'll be able to use it's Flash memory to store KS3.1 and then install WB3.9 BB2 + unofficial BB4

Nothing special about Amigakit's USB ethernet dongles other than the price.

You can get off eBay an IDE->CF adapter for A4000 for under £5. No drivers required. Install anything you like to the CF card on your PC (via a USB card reader & WinUAE) and transfer it over to the Amiga.

If you're smart, partition your CF card into two. Amiga FFS and PC Fat32 and get native file access on both using ADFView on PC and Fat95 on Amiga

IIRC the machine you bought from ebay recently has a Cyberstorm 040 card in it.

Before you part with the cash for a Deneb, you can just remap a Kickstart 3.1 ROM image to Fast RAM using Blizkick, no need for physical 3.1 chips at all.

Assuming he doesn't want the Deneb for USB then yeah do that.

That's cool, but I can't afford a Deneb for a while.

Didn't realise that! That would be easier.....can I 'simply' copy the HDD to a compact flash and install over that?

That would be very kind of you, I am in no rush at the moment, I don't have much time or cash, but I want to plan ahead, and get my wife ordering my birthday present

Didn't think there was!

And yes I do have a Cyberstorm 040 MK2. Remapping...hmmm....is that difficult.....CF adapter looks good! Nice and cheap!

Ah yes I do want the Deneb at some point to give me ethernet.......USB could be handy

Nope, it's very easy.

Just download and install Blizkick and tell it which Kickstart image to use.

First line of your S:Startup-Sequence is usually the best place for it.

It maps the ROM and then reboots into KS3.1.

Coolness, sounds fab! I assume remapping ROM won't affect Workbench in the meantime?

You can run WB3.0 on a remapped 3.1 ROM with no problems that I am aware of.

Buy a copy of Amiga Forever for the 3.1 ROMS and installation disks, or just google for them. ;)

You'll have an extra automatic soft reboot during a power-on reset and loose 512Kbytes of Fast RAM

Both of which you probably had anyhow if you had MAPROM set.

I have both 'random' ROM's and Amiga Forever '10. So that is no problem. I will give that a go - and thanks been a help........how do these IDE splitters work? I could do with two more! Do they plug and play?

Still waiting for that PCMICA from ebay....once that is here I'll be unplugging the CDR for awhile and transferring some stuff across! Fingers crossed!

I have just received my CF Reader, disconnected my IDE CD-ROM and plugged it in, plugged in the power, took the jumper off to make it slave [Current IDE HDD is Master].
And it doesn't work, if there is no card in the reader then when workbench loads it comes up with an error. If I leave the card in the reader [has some random files on it which I used with my EasyADF PCMCIA kit for my A1200 it doesn't load the HDD and comes up with the insert floppy logo, any ideas?
