Title: What modern "Things" can I do with my Amiga?
Post by: BillHarrison on April 02, 2011, 01:48:30 AM
Besides the occasional game, what can I do with my fairly unexpanded amiga?

Amiga 2000HD brand new, had it for 15 years now in the box, got a 030 accelerator recently, and am itching to play with it a bit.

I need to find some usefulness for it!

So, what do you do daily on your amiga, and what software do you do it with?

I have given up on trying to build an "Uber" amiga as parts are too expensive, and I have pretty much the ultimate expanded amiga on my desktop with my quad core 3.8ghz winuae setup.

Word processing comes up in my mind immediately, but how do i get the files in / out of the amiga for printing, and what software can I print with?  All my printers are too modern for the amiga.

Email?  I could probably setup up a pretty basic dial up (I think I even get one free with my time warner) and log on that way with a modem....

Well, anyways, those are my musings.  In my day to day life, I have to have a PC, but would love to find more ways to use my amiga!

Everything except the internet on my A1200s, burning CDs,DVDs, gfx work, DTP, programming, Letters, audio work and the odd game once in a while... :)

I understand you don't want to spend too much money on your Amiga setup, but reckon you could have some fun with a Video Toaster. Here's a current eBay auction for the A2000 version:

Do you like to play around with video and animation (if you don't know, would you like to give it a try)?

While I still use a couple of old Epson Stylus Colour 600 printers on my Amigas. I use Pagestream (mainly for DTP) but you can save the files in Postscript format to print using a PC or Mac... :)

Letters etc... I use FinalWriter but I don't think these file can be exported to a PC or Mac for printing but if I recall correctly WordsWorth was able to do so.. :)

Hi,

If you can buy a printer for your Amiga 2000, make sure you look at what printers it can use before purchasing one. I have a Star color printer that still uses a ribbon, works great with the Amiga. Now with this setup you can do Word Processing, Spreadsheeting, and Databasing. I know not that exciting but it works.

Now with the purchase of a genlock or a video toaster, you can hook up camera's and do switching to record various things like weddings, birthdays, parties, etc.

With Scala you can make up videos and do video titling.

One thing that is becoming harder and harder to do on an Amiga is internet. Some of our hardcore Amiga programmers which hang out here on Amiga Org and argue all day about nothing just waste their hours away arguing about such silly things like CUSA, MACS, PC's etc. Maybe if they all got togther and brainstormed, they might come up with a good browser, but they all would probably argue about the name and the color.

Well anyhow, the Amiga is just plain fun no matter what you do.
If you want to know something special about it just ask, but remember alway avoid that one dreaded person on Amiga Org, this guy just hangs around trying to spoil your fun, don't listen to anything he says, he is a monster in disguise, avoid Karlos at all costs.

I am interested in playing with a toaster especially now that they are affordable.  I remember getting the newtek demo tape as a kid and dreaming of doing similair things. Are there any modern Printer drivers for the amiga?

Stuff that springs to mind:

(Other than games)

You can create cool tracker music.

Plenty of options for creating pictures and animation.

Email works fine in most cases, and some basic web browsing is doable, but you'll need a bit of fast RAM, and low expectations ;)
Works better than you'd expect though.

Downloading stuff from aminet is nice and easy.

Poke around for a post script capable printer with a parallel port and you're probably okay for word processing and so forth. Honestly not many advances here since the 90s anyways.
I suppose if you get the wordperfect amiga version, you could export those files to a different machine for printing :)

I think he'd need an ethernet card to do most of those things.  Those aren't cheap on a stock A2000.

i did that on a dial up connection until about 2007 on an A4000.
