I have looked everywhere and wondered for years-
Is ZORRO an acronym or initialism or just a word choosen to name the slots??
Any suggestions?

It is just a name.. Some people have reported that one of the prototype Amigas was called Zorro, but all the historics I've read only talk about the Lorraine.
Someone from the original Los Gatos team might know for sure.. Dave Haynie could be a good bet of the later Commodore team..
I seem to remember, that the Zorro-1 example expander was a Los Gatos design.

Some comics? character has name Zorro (the revenger), too. In a quiz called "Who wants to be a millionare" the same question was asked. The answer was: name Zorro comes from a FOX.

IIRC one of the early Amiga prototypes was called Zorro after the 70's TV series.
The name was later used to describe the Expansion port and it appears to have stuck :-)

From the Zorro III specification,
The original "Zorro" name comes from the code name of one of the A1000 prototype boards. The "Zorro" board was the one that followed the
"Lorraine", and was the board in the works when much of the expansion specifications were worked up. Since everyone uses the "Zorro" name,
and no one’s suggested a better name, I stick with it throughout this document.

AFAIK Zorro is FOX in spanish.
Smart and fast bus controller in 1986.(the fastest)

It was also a design example for an expander board. (basically a sidecar board that gave the A1000 some expansion slots)
The Zorro I slots were electrically compatible with Zorro II cards, but they face the other way around and the cards were square.
They redesigned the specification and changed the card form factor when the A2000 came out, because they wanted to use ISA cards in the same chassis. This became what we now know as Zorro II.
The A2000 is basically the A1000 design and the Zorro "example board" moulded together into the same board. They also changed the AmigaBus side connector into a female card edge and made that the A2000's CPU slot.. Also they added the simple video slot, basically the same signals as on the RGB connector, but inside the box.
The later A2000-CR is a redesign to use the cheaper A500 chipset, they also extended the video slot to include some more signals.. The original A2000 uses the A1000 chipset with DIL Agnus.
