Title: N-Gage and Amiga.. Do you know N-Gage at all?
Post by: AmiDelf on December 19, 2003, 01:00:56 AM
Because people dosent know how to use N-Gage at all. Its a nice multitasking OS and can have lots of different programs up at the same time. When people loads up lots of programs, N-Gage gets out of memory like AmigaOS and all other OS.

Your all just to negative and dont know a thing. I own N-Gage and its really nice! Yes.

- I dont need to hold it on its side to talk!'
- It supports more than 128mb mmc mem cards!
- It got a multitasking OS, SymbianOS
- There is Opera, MAME, C64, GameBoy emulators for it...
- FXexplorer for it gives you full control over the phone and more
- It handles mp3, midi +++ video player builtin,...
- Nokia should be told to sell games thru net, so people can download them instead of changing the 32mb card that comes with the phone
- With the phone, handsfree set comes with it, wich is really handy..
- A USB cable comes with it, so you can control your Nokia N-Gage thru Windows
- The handheld device got Bluetooth, GPRS and other nice features,...

There is just to many BAD rumours on it, and yes! Nokias campaign is totally wrong! But N-Gage is a nice handheld device. I love it!

In the future, I would love to see such device with AmigaOS installed. I love SymbianOS though, but it would feel right...

If we can work tougether with Nokia and help them, that would be great. And since Nokia is really big, it would help them telling about the Amiga community...

AFAIK it is only available for GSM cell phone systems, which leaves out the CDMA system I'm on as well as most North American cell phone users. :-(

Dunno what's in Canada, but in US, we've got T-Mobile with GSM phones (finally!). And yes, most (bout 93%) people are with companies that don't support GSM - only CDMA, and it sucks..

@amidelf:

In the US cellphones use a different kind of network, in Europe we have 800 and 1900 MHz GSM networks (not sure bout those numbers though). A cellphone has to be a so called 'triband' phone to be usable in the US. And I guess the N-Gage isn't? I don't know really.

heh, yes.. N-Gage is triband,... can be used everywhere. Going to Australia in 2005, so N-Gage is a nice mobile phone for that too...

Okay, I looked at the N-Gage site. Couldn't find all the info I wanted. I see from other replies that is might not work in alot of places in the US, probably why I haven't seen it. Then again, being on the US/Canadian border, you have the problem of your phone picking up a Canadian tower if it's the stronger signal and having you call go thru Rogers.
One think I don't like is that the screen seem really small. Is it true about the battery/game pack thing?

No idea, I'm not all that interested in mobile phones. My crummy old Siemens M35i still functions nicely :-).

You are right AmiDelf, the N-Gage is being marketed all wrong, atleast here in the US. . . but as a console gamer, I look at the N-Gage and just chuckle. There are so many design principals wrong with it that I wonder what the designers were drinking/smoking when the conceptualized it. The screen is all wrong. The whole world is trying to move to widescreen formats and they choose to make a "tallscreen" system. Sega had several games on the Game Gear (remember that?) that played with taller than wide screens by holding the system sideways and they flopped. The shape of the N-Gage is uncomfortable. There is an antenna sticking out of the side that seems to get in the way of me holding it well. The D-Pad doesn't feel "right", kind of like comparing a 1st party Playstation Dual Shock controller with a cheap 3rd party knock off. There are way too many buttons surrounding the game play buttons (I don't know what/if they are labeled). I don't know much about the OS, but I do know that I had a very difficult time launching the demo game that was inserted in the systems on display at my local shops. Console gamers / kids don't want to have to select and launch a game - rather it is expected that upon inserting a cart and powering on the game should begin. I could envision possibly popping up a requester asking the user if they wanted to launch a newly inserted game via a hot swap. . . but oh wait, you have to turn off the system and remove the battery to access the slot. Whoops, guess they can't do that one huh? :-D

Really, with Sony's announcement of the PSP (by all released specs a much nicer system all around) I don't know why Nokia pursued this plan at all?? I would much rather have a system with Sony on it because I know that Sony has contracts with big name companys to develop games such as SquareEnix (Final Fantasy anyone?), Capcom, EA, etc... Besides home brew games and programs that will run on ANY device with the SymbianOS (as I understand it), what does the N-Gage offer? 10 games total? All available on better platforms with better versions. The systems design is even based on one of Nokias other phones and to me doesn't stand out in any way. Thanks I will keep my GameboySP and when the time comes, pick up a Playstation Portable.

Firstly, you lie! There is no antenna sticking out on the side! You havent tried it, it seems.... The console might not be made for widescreen games, but its superb for arcade games, like 1943 and so on,...

If  you like shooters and other games, its supeb. I love the thing, but I dont like people telling lies.

First pal, don't call me a liar out right, at the stores I have tried it, and YES I have tried it, (EBX near my work, GameStop.com, and SoftwareEtc aka Babbages) there is something (whatever it may be) over my left hand. Perhaps its a anti-theft device or something (lock perhaps? I didn't investigate it closely), I don't know but it's there. It is afterall mounted so that it cannot be moved, but the whatever it may be was definitely making comfortable use of the device difficult. If I can, I will snap a pic if you like next time I am at the mall though I don't know if the store clerks will like me using a digital camera in the store.

Second, I like shooters, but with 3D games seeming to be a big target for the system, having a taller than wide screen doesn't make much sense, but I can appreciate it for a vertical only scrolling shooter game. . .but then how many of the youth and gaming audience the system is targeted for actually appreciate such games nowadays?

Third, care to try to shoot down any more of my comments on the system? It is still clumsy, underpowered, under supported by big game devs, and doomed to failure, but you are entitled to love the system just the same.

Okay, chill out. Don't take it personal. Don't make accusations, that's for everyone.
I don't know about the anttena. Didn't see one in the pics at N-Gage.com. If he said he felt something odd when holding it, that's his opinion. Like he said in his responce it may in fact have been something else.
Just because everyone hasn't fallen in love with the N-Gage, even those that have seen it, doesn't mean they are wrong, misunderstanding it, etc.   Not everyone loves the Amiga. Some PC users joke about it. I'd have thought most members of AO would have this concept. It shouldn't be a surprise.

"If we can work tougether with Nokia and help them, that would be great. And since Nokia is really big, it would help them telling about the Amiga community..."

I think it was great thing that AmigaDE got into MediaTerminal. It would have made Amiga a lot more known also at Nokia Mobile Phones.

Anyway... currently Amiga has nothing to offer.
Nothing that I would dare to mention to my friends @ NMP.

btw. & FYI: Too bad(?) that AInc AA has not taken off properly and that it exist only on M$ mobile devices, on the worst enemy of main mobile phone companies.  I think "MyOrigo" is the only cell phone company actively using inent... but I'm not sure if it would help Amiga-Nokia relations if AA existed there, U C, Microcell and Nokia have rather inflamed relations...

Even if there is a lot of ex and current Amigans working at Nokia,  better just forget the dreaming of good Amiga-Nokia relations. Currently it seems too far fetched.

AS a mobile game developer, i can tell ya that even if the ngage is one of the fastest phone (not talking about palm aso, but hehe the sx1 is faster ;) i do not like it that much. Why?
Looks ugly hehe, doesnt have infrared, bluetooth is not available from java (and their java classes are very buggy), and the ui is not that intuitive. I really prefer the nokia 6600 (and you can run ngage games on it hehe), but i defenitely prefer my AMIGA!  ;-)

To see what I was talking about, check out the pic here I took last night. It looked to me like it was there to protect an antenna of some sorts, but now looks like it might be part of the lock for security.

Pic I took of N-Gage in Display (http://home.comcast.net/~joshuadolan/stuff/n-gage.jpg)

Since it is obviously not part of the device or covering part of the device, it didn't help the N-Gage make a good first impression on me when I couldn't hold it comfortably right from the start.

@ chromozone

Now that Zodiac may just have something to compete against Nintendo and Sony. Big screen with lots of colors, what appears to be a decent layout for D-Pad and buttons, a sleek and balanced look, 2 easy access slots for memory cards, and all the PDA features of a Palm device. Very cool. Would love to see which big game dev houses jump on with it and what the PSP and Nintendo's future handhelds offer first though.

Okay the Zodiac is cool, but the problem with it is that it's _not_ a cell phone.  It's more of a cross between a Game Gear and a PDA instead of a Game Gear and a cell phone. This Treo (http://slate.msn.com/id/2092842/) is nice but it probably sucks at games. (Maybe Tetris is okay) :-o
Kinda looks like you can get 2 out of 3, but nobody has it all yet. :-)

One thing i really hate about nokias.. all of them seems to have very sucky battery lifetime compared to other brands.. Even my cheap ericsson seems to have way better battery life time than any of the newer nokias

Okay, I'm going to lock this topic. It's gotten off topic and those anywhere near on topic just slam the n-gage. Not really much of a discussion, is it?
We've all got our own little favorites, lets just leave it at that. Everything has drawbacks, some you can live with and some you can't.
