Title: Images of C64x Mold
Post by: dammy on March 29, 2011, 03:37:53 PM
First post has images of the top and bottom of the first (first of three sets) C64x mold that are being made.  Barry has posted pictures of injection machine later in the thread.  Amazing what has to be done to produce plastic cases.

I know I'm not the target for this, but I preferred the "A600" style case... That did exist? Right? My memory isn't what it used to be :)

In fact, an "A600" case with the guts of a MacMini would be pretty fun :)

They're working on something like that, albeit something more similar to A500(but with less depth)/A1200 then A600. It will be pretty powerful AFAIK, mobile i7 + (probably)midlevel nVidia gfx.
They are plans for something like Mac Mini too.

Yeah the C64 mk 2 AKA the 64C was my preferred styling with it's C128 minus keypad looks, but it was discontinued and the brown breadbin re-introduced due to public opinion.

Got a few of them but they all work so they're staying locked up for now because they're goin to be harder to find once bit rot sets in.

Wow....I am impressed someone had the financial deep pockets and guts to do this.  It's DAMNED expensive to get anything made industrially like this.

I do think this will be popular.  I wasn't expecting to see numbers in the tens of thousands though...if that pans out it WILL be impressive and the persons who took the financial risk deserve to reap the profit.

Well if they are showing mold shots that means they're serious as those cost tens of thousands to 6 figures depending on # of parts and complexity. Nice looking mold I might add.

Forgot to add, there will be a C64Cx also... sometimes later this year or early next year, for those interested and more sympathetic to the C64C looks and functionality.

Yoz is working with them.  We shall see what the final product looks like.

I would buy one of those if an exact copy of the original keyboard was also made and allowed me to use 9 pin joysticks because USB joysticks are rubbish. Not interested in PC motherboard though.

I'm sure we'll hit 1000 day minimum.....
sales are far in excess of the limitations that one mold presents.

Wow, so sales are far in excess of 1000 per day?

That really surprises me.  I wouldn't have thought that something as niche as a Linux PC in a C64 case would have generated such sales.

You know they can just sell the case and keyboard and I think folks would buy it as a gag computer case and install the Atom CPU motherboard itx systems to make this a cool retro computer.

No. They haven't sold any yet.

There is no way they're going to sell 1000+ a day.

They would be very lucky to sell 1000 in a year.

They have said that they are going to sell the case bare.  Also, with the computer installed, it will be an Atom CPU with ION video.  So, what you are suggesting is what they are selling.

I would put my MiniMig_ITX-v2 board in it instead :) That would be so much cooler than a lame Atom board :afro:

They already sold them to distribution chains, on-line stores... why else do you think they are mass producing them in these numbers(1000 per day)? :)

It will be interesting to see how many people purchase this system. Since its not for sale yet, the real popularity isn't possible to estimate.
However, its definitely way more than 1000/year.
I hope they're shipping these with good C64 emulation software. That could add to the appeal.

As it stands now, C=OS(which will have emulation software) will not be ready for launch and these first examples will probably be shipped with Ubuntu 10.x. The owners of the early examples will be mailed their example of C=OS 1.0 when it's ready for release. AMIGAs will be on sale later in the year with probably C=OS 1.1

The co-branding should significantly help in sales of the C64x especially with the network TV ads in the US as a additional layer of marketing.  April should be a very interesting month for those of us who remember pre-Amiga C= days.

The moulds are the expensive part, so we can assume the cases will be made in quantity soon.

I think I'll wait for an Amiga case, and put an FPGAArcade inside! That's because the C64 always was an ugly brick and I don't need one of those sitting around my house!

Someone mentioned the C64C. It was released in 1986 and 1987 depending on country. In some markets it pretty much remained until the demise of the C64, in others it was replaced by the C64G (back to breadbox case, but lighter colour and either the original colour keyboard or a C128 style light keyboard).

My preferred combination in terms of looks is a C64C with old style (1985 model, black/brown with dark grey function keys) keyboard - not sure if any models were ever sold like that though Commodore did seem to sell a variety of odd combinations to manage stock levels of the various parts, but I put my old 1985 model keyboard in my C64C...

I'm thinking a real A600 or A1200 case with a Replay board... The hassle will be the keyboard interface (maybe take the MCU from a A500 keyboard, and use a Keyrah or something combined with the daughterboard, so a remade one with a PC style keyboard would be a tolerable alternative... A500 style case would be too big for me, though.

A500 was a nice machine, but it was never going to win any style awards with it's "melted Commodore 128" styling :)

A600 & 1200 was more traditional looking Commodore machine really, I suppose there are shades of Commodore Plus/4 to the rear slats on the A500 but the design is just not really assertive enough for me personally. Actually both the A500 and A2000 were pretty non-descript styling wise IMO.
