Title: A4000 Grey screen!
Post by: chris_c on March 27, 2011, 10:49:36 PM
:)Just dug out my A4000, it's been in the original box for the last ? years. Its in good condition, an original 030. Even the battery looks in ok condition!

It passed all the hardware startup tests. But gets stuck on light grey. Power LED gose bright green and the HD light flickers a few times. Nothing on the keyboard light, but works when you press the caps lock.

Any advice on what todo next to get my toy back up and running :)

I have pushed the ROM chip in as it seemed a bit loose. Dont have a tool to take out and re-seat yet.

If i need to replace the battery can i just pop the old one out or is it a full desolder - resolder job?

Cheers
Chris

Has that battery leaked? Common problem on old systems. The corrosion can eat traces causing problems.

Try re-seating all the chips? I would remove the battery at the least, just because it looks ok doesn't mean that it is, it could not be causing problems. At worst try swapping the CIA's around.
I remember i got a gray screen a while ago and all i did was push all the chips down

Thanks for you help so far, just an update.

I removed the 3 chips that can be pulled out and put the back in.
No joy :(

I left the processor board off and it did the same grey screen?
If i put the board back on and leave the chip ram out it flickers green as you would expect.

Its a REV B board if that helps. not sure where the CIA chips are but if its top right then there soldered to the board.
