nice but I personally like the case that's supplied directly from ACube better for this package

Hi,

Let me see, I am going to pay $1,198.98 for a 1.1 ghz computer that is running an OS that no one is making software for yet. There is no programing software, no companies talking about making software for it, no one producing a mag for it and then optional accessories are a keyboard and mouse.

My questions are:

If OS 4.0 fails, Is there an alternate OS that can be used on this system?
1.1 ghz is sort of 10 years archaic, are there upgrades.

I know Amiganites are looney, but $1,198.98 is a lot of looney for a 10 year old obsolete processor, with a unsupported OS that no one is making programs for.

So what do I do with this Amazing computer?

Load up the OS and say wow! doesn't that look sharp?
Lets see tomorrow I will load up the OS and see how sharp it looks.
Hey! I will go to Amiga.org and see how many other loonies are loading up their OS and seeing how sharp their OS looks.

Maybe next week Amiga.org will have a contest to see who has the best looking startup screen.

and we get all this for $1,198.00, lets get real, in order to sell something like this, at least to me, the price will have to come down an awful lot. If the price is right, I might buy one for development, but why should I buy a Trojan horse at that price. Sorry Amigakit, there is a lot of computer power I can buy at that price that has supported OS's, with supported software. I am loyal to Amiga, but when I bought my first Amiga 1000 for that price, I saw support from Commodore, Electronic Arts, Microsoft, and various other computer software companies. I saw to Mags (Amigaworld and Amazing Computing) on the shelf.

What are you showing me for that money?

smerf (a real person in a realistic world) not an Amiganite looney

Plenty of PPC Linux options for these SAM rigs.  Linux on them is an enjoyable experience.

But yeah, you are absolutely correct the price is prohibitive for most people, Smerf.  That won't change anytime soon unless OS 4.1 gets ported to commodity hardware.  I enjoy my SAM 440, but it was priced about 2x what a sane man should have paid, lol.

Hi,

@Duce

I know what you mean, didn't know you could run linux on it, I like Ubuntu, but still the price is way out of line, I mean I can run Ubuntu on a 2.4 ghz AMD CPU with a generic or ATI, or NVIDIA  graphics card for less than $350, I just bought a 6 core AMD CPU, motherboard,4 gig of memory, 250 gig hard drive and a 5770 graphics card for less than $600 (590). I am running windows xp on it, but I have had 10.10 ubuntu on it. All I am asking these retailers to do is quit trying to gouge us amiganites and give us a machine at a decent price. I would pay up to $250 for this sam440e computer and that would include cpu, motherboard, memory (at least 2 gigs) graphics card, and hard drive plus a cdrom. If they can't do that for such a slow computer than they are not getting my money, I don't care if they call it the Amiga Obama. I work to hard for my money to be suckered in because they put a boing ball on it. I can get a boing ball insignia made up at work, and I like the color blue thank you.

Ahh c'mon, there's "worse" things you could be wasting money on.

But yeah, the observation here hasn't changed. Anything new produced under an Amiga banner is not going to represent the most sane computing value out there for most people. At least this stuff holds its value relative to the cost of when purchased new. You can't say that about your generic PC mobo's  ;)

Re: your signature... someone is opening up Amiga doors - just that the price of admission is a little high is all!

From your post, it sounds like you are under the impression that we are making a large margin on these machines and generating substantial profits.  The situation is the reverse: margins on bespoke hardware such as this are very small.  In fact, if we have a warranty case with them, we make a loss.  This is one reason we soak test every machine comprehensively before dispatching to customer.

To manufacture custom hardware for this price, the market would have to be 100 fold bigger than it currently is: economies of scale.

This is amiga forum, not Linux, Windows, Intel or AMD

Amiga Os is hobby OS, thats why your arguments doesn't work here.

Some people buy obsolete cars or paintings, we buy amigas.

Funny... I saw this thread on the header page and thought "I wonder if someone has written a post about how it's expensive.. how you can get a PC for $100 with a free holiday in the Bahamas... how 1GHz is too slow... how OS4 has no software...".

Not that I'm saying people are predictable, but....

If you buy a minority machine like an AmigaOS 4 machine, you must understand you're going to pay minority prices - which basic supply and demand dictates is going to be high. You don't buy one to run Linux, you buy one because you want to run OS4. If you don't understand this, then this machine isn't aimed at you, you'll be happier buying a C=USA box as this is a bog-standard PC with a badge saying "Amiga" on it (but that's an argument for another day).

Hi smerf... :)

You say $1,198 is alot of money and you could get a much better & more modern system for this price, maybe... :)

While I have no interest in a SAM or a PC or MAC at these prices, it makes me wonder just how good these modern machines are. I mean even with 2GB of RAM on this iMAC, the way the dumb thing is designed and the incredibly inefficient OS it uses (well over 100,000 files which the OS has to constantly access from HD) modern computers in comparison to the the Amiga and it's OS are just a heap of HD wearing out bloated crap... :)

Why do they use such terrible OS's such as Darwin, Linux etc... I reckon it must be some sort of deal they have with the HD manufactures to wear out your HD as fast as possible so you have to constantly purchase new ones... :(

All that real memory installed and they still have to use an HD as virtual memory to perform simple things that a real Amiga can do in just a few Mbs of real memory, just proves they may be full of modern technology but they are totally inefficient pieces of keech... :)

Cheers

Franko

Hi,

@Tripitaka,

Never knew that this site existed. Looked at the stuff on there, ok, it caught my interest, but not $1,198 worth.  the first thing it should have is a good networking and browsing program then a program like open office, a computer should have a good word processor, database, and spreadsheet program,  drawing, and presentation program and open office has all of this. A drawing program like gimp, and last a good email program like thunderbird. If you notice I am mostly pinging on Linux open source programs, they are free work very well and can be given away with every new computer. This would at least set up a usable computer for who purchases it.

The point I gripe with the most is the cost, tell these wholesalers to go to Newegg and Tigerdirect, look at the old computer hardware they are selling for $200 - $300 and you will see what I am talking about. I may look stupid but I am not a IDIOT.

1.1 ghz -- I bought one of these 10 years ago for $300 with Lindows installed on it when I was going through college studying windows 2000 server, as a matter of fact I threw it out 3 years ago. LOL and now these clowns want me to buy it for $1,198 just to run OS4 on it.

Wake up people, as long as we support retailers like this the Amiga and it's software will always be 10 years in back of times.

Why should I support ancient tech.

Convince me to buy one, better yet send me one for a week and let me write a review on it. The Amiga 1000 salesman did down in  Jacksonville Fla. and guess what, he won.

Hi,

@Franko,

Sad new Franko old friend, my trusty old pal the Amiga 4000 died last night, I was getting ready to load up a game of megaball, when the screen went black, I tried a reboot but it just stays black, the cdrom lights blink, but no floppy drive activity and no hard disk lights. Will go into it tonight and check and see what is wrong, hopefully something simple like a loose accel card or a loose floppy drive cable, don't think it is going to be a graphics problem because my VGA monitor goes from yellow to green on it's on light.

Well anyway the old girl had a very happy useful life since 1992. Have another Amiga upstairs that died like that about 7 years ago. Hope I can repair one with the other.

Speaking of that, I have never lost a hard drive in an Amiga, as a matter of fact one 8 gig hard drive that I have that heats up and stops working in a PC has been working in my 4000 for the last 5 years, but alas the A4000 has quit last night, but I can still hear that 8 gig trying to work inside.

Modern hardware is fine, its the OSes that dont always utilise it particularly well. This is in part due to the more typical reasons people will suggest (ie. the OSes are much, much more complex beasts than Amiga OS), but one thing that's overlooked is development software. In the attempts to make things easier to use more and more layers of abstraction from the hardware is used, compilers arent nearly as efficient as they once where, binaries get bigger as a result of all these unnecessary overheads and so on. I have no doubt these sorts of OSes could offer exactly the same functionailty without the massive unneccessary overheads. Its not just the bloat of the software, but the bloat of the development tools as well.
Now I dont suggest we all go back to asm or binary, hardware and software is way too complex these days for that (it'd take so long to write the kind of software people are used to that no software would ever get finished, not to mention there's way too much hardware out there), but if someone with money decides to tackle these issues and write most things from the grounds up they absolutely could carve out a user base. In short I understand why things are the way they are, but although its tricky, they dont have to be as bad as they are.

@Smerf

Retailers can only sell what's manufactured, I have no qualm with them at all. I am far from content with what passes as a modern "amiga", but that's not the retailers fault. I'd be surprised if even the bigger folk make enough to make a living from selling Amiga hardware.

UAE/ Amiga Forever and Amiga Kit are the best Amiga value out there and you can use the library of Amiga software re;eased thus for and do it all on commodity hardware.

@smerf

Don't worry too much about your A4000 - whatever's wrong with it it'll be repairable somehow. My A1500 went the way of the dodo the other day too... switched all the chips round and traced it to a faulty Kickstart ROM, so it looks like it just wanted to be upgraded to 3.1 after all.

You have to understand, though, that we're limited in CPU speed because the new machines like the SAM are using embedded CPUs, not desktop ones, and they're intrinsically slower... but don't just look at the numbers.  The point is you can do a lot with 1.1GHz, it's just that Windows, MacOS and even Linux these days bog down their CPUs in a way that AmigaOS doesn't.

In other words, it may be 1.1GHz, but generally it'll feel faster than a 4-core 3GHz CPU running Windows. Obviously it won't be as fast for computation and data encoding, but for general usage it'll feel very responsive indeed.

When you bought your A1000, did it have tons of software for it? No, it didn't. You bought it presumably because it was something new, something different and exciting. Something you could enjoy playing with, which was still useful.

All of that applies to modern Amiga machines. So we're 10 years behind in pricing terms... that's life I'm afraid. If you want something different, you need to pay for it. If you want the mass produced tat, you get it cheap.

Trust me: ACube, AmigaKit et al don't make a massive profit margin on these things. They're not stupid. If they have such a high list price, it's because that's how expensive they are.  Plus don't forget your A1000 will have been a lot pricier than a Sam 460 system; the only difference is these days you can get faster machines for less, but as none of them are PPC based, they can't be compared.

Hi Smerf... :)

Sorry to hear about your A4000 but it will most likely be something that can easily be fixed... :)

In 25 years of using the Amiga I've never had one develop the slightest fault let alone break altogether. My main A1200 in the tower has been running 24/7 since 1996 and still works fine even to this day along with my Microvitic MultiSync monitor why hasn't even been switched off in over 6 years... :)

I reckon myself the stress put on most systems that breaks them is the constant switching on and off of them (the initial surge each time on power up shortens the life of the components) the only time my main miggy goes off and my monitor is if we have a power cut... :)

Also those that leave them in cupboards, lofts, garages etc... and only power them up once in a blue moon are just asking for trouble, as the initial surge/shock on power up to things that have been left so long can easily blow stuff in the blink of an eye... :)

In fact the only repair I've had to do was on an A1200 I bought from ebay recently that had a gfx flicker problem, the owner said it had been up in his loft for at least 10 years but it was easily fixed with a new 1uf capacitor... :)

Of all the electronic devices I use the Amiga has to be the hardiest piece of equipment I've ever came across... :)

Cheers

Franko

Dunno about that. They (amigas) dont take as much of a (literal) beating as some other machines Ive had. Buttons fly off easily, keyboard membranes die with even the mildest of stabbings, floppy drives dont often survive intact after even one throwing at a wall. My Tandy TRS-80 though,.... man that took a pounding, mocked me, and called me a girl  :)

alas I've grown only too used to this type of attitude here:(

heck AmigaOS has never had it this good hardware wise since 1994..we've got brand new dedicated hardware on the low end (Sam440), mid range (Sam460), and High end (X1000):)

heck for a grand I can't even buy a nice classic system with a 060 accelerator card..
I could'nt afford my dram machine back in the day (A4000T) but I'll be damned if I don't buy a X1000 :cool:

I believe the economics of scale have been explained many times. It still dosn't excuse making the cost of ownership so high that even big amiga fans can't justify buying it.

I'd like to have an os4 machine someday, but there just no way I can spend 1200$ on a computer who's specs can be beaten by a computer I can get on ebay for 50$ (take your pic, emac or pc)

Besides this, my phone is more powerful and has a better browser too.

I hope hyperion wake up and port to arm or x86 before they die.
