Title: What is your flavor?
Post by: SysAdmin on March 09, 2011, 09:27:58 AM
We are just wondering what which flavor of Amiga you use on a regular bases. Of course Amiga.org welcomes all of them.

Wow!! 100% use AROS... Sure one vote is a smallish sample size, but I feel the results are meaningful in a very real sense :)

-edit- down to 50% now... Stupid classic user ;)

In order:

Classic

MorphOS

and hopefully soon if I find the right hardware:

Amithlon.

Surely this should be a multi selection poll ? I use my a1200, amithlon and aros and all more or less equally (although the order of preference changes depending on what Im doing). In addition to this I sometimes use the 68k versions of UAE ontop of both amithlon and my classic amiga. This makes my vote innaccurate regardless of what I choose.

Got a lot of time to make up for as I didn't post anything for the last 24 hours, I went up into the loft late Monday night and the ladder fell away and I couldn't get back out again (me swollen feet prevented me from jumping down)... :(

Only got out this morning when the postman heard me cries for help and put the ladder back up... :)

Still I found a lot of interesting old stuff up there amongst the dead bodies that I'd forgot about (got a bit scary though when me flashlight went out). I'd recommend a a 24 hour stint in a loft to everyone, it's quite an experience... :)

Perhaps, for your next tour of Iraq you should buy a whole load of old Amigas from ebay and take them with you, then you could open up a wee bazzar stall called Commodore Iraq and make a few bob from the locals... :)

Just tell em it's the most modern piece of kit available for the next 167,400 square miles and tell the punters the Syrians are still using Spectrums and the Iranians are still stuck on Acorn Atoms (sure to boost sales that is)... :)

I use most, in descending order:

3.x on 68k hardware
3.x on UAE and Amithlon
AROS on UAE
AROS on 68k hardware
AROS on x86 virtual machines
MorphOS on Macs
AROS on ARM Linux hosted

One of the many things on my todo list is to try an AROS 68k Kickstart ROM containing the bare minimum required to boot, combined with an x86-Big-Endian compiled AROS userland.

Then once I've got it working, try and convince Bernd Meyer he has a product to sell! :)

You got it right the first time... ;)

I'd never in 25 years heard the term "Classic" being applied to the Amiga until Hyperion released OS4.0 for "Classic" Amigas... :)

Now that's all these forums and sites refer to the Amiga as is "Classic" they should really be just called Amigas not "real" or "classic"... :)

Just saying like... ;)

I think it's most likely been borrowed from Apple terminology as "Classic" is the term they have traditionally applied to the previous generation of Apple Macs each time they have changed CPU architecture or OS. (68k System 8 -> PPC System 8/9 -> PPC OSX etc)

Right. Everybody knows that the real classic Amigas are OCS only! AGA was more like a parody of the real Amiga.

Oh, never mind. I am just trolling. Don´t take the bait. But I guess we have to admit that definitions can change.

I never owned an AGA machine. When I saw how slow Deluxe Paint was at full collor on the hot new Amiga 1200, I decided to buy an Amiga 3000 instead. It was fine until I needed some UNIX stuff that wouldn´t run on NetBSD on my Amiga. So I bought a PC in 1995 and a Mac in 2000. It took me until 2009 to realize that Amiga is still alive and cool. Now I am using OS4 whenever I am at home.
I would like to use AROS on the road, but I never managed to get it useable on any of my computers. It fails on simple things like networking and screen resolutions, but maybe it´s just me.

Hi,

I use Cloanto's Amiga Forever 2011. Even though I have all my classics set up, I turn them on about once a week in order to keep the batteries charged. Other than that I use a replaceable PC to use as my Amiga.

Just remember (FRANKO) when that old silicon goes, your pal (not video) is gone. I have one dead A500 and one dead A4000 up in the attic. My original A4000 keeps on singing though.  The two dead ones I bought from ebay.

Hi Smerf

No worries about when my silicon goes, got a cupboard full of backups to last me the rest of me lifetime... :)

The ex-wife on the other hand, now she's had problems with her silicon, I always knew there was something dodgy about that plastic surgeon... :D

I picked the silence Franko.  Knew something was wrong.  I think I even posted as such somewhere yesterday. You could use A.Org as your 24 hour monitoring station.  You should post a next of kin phone number in your profile so when your away for 24 hours we can call them and let em know somethings wrong.

BTW:Classic's rool of course.

You kidding, if any of me family knew I was stuck up in the loft the buggers would come in and break the ladder then nick all me Amiga's & SNES RPG Games to flog on eBay... :furious:

It was quite good up there though, found an old VIC20 and some cartridges I'd forgotten about but best of all I found this really cool solid silver teaspoon that I never even knew about, it's shiney... :)

(PS:thinking of venturing up there again soon but this time I'll pack some sandwiches & a flask of tea, oh and some extra batteries for me torch, got pretty dark up there when they ran out and I want to check out what's behind what seems a freshly bricked up wall that I spotted... :))

Nope, I love my Amithlon machine. As I said in my response this should be a multi selection poll. I use my classic, amithlon and aros, plus also use uae on aros, amithlon and my classic. There's no way for me to vote accurately here.

There are enough parts in the pipeline to fix these "OLD" amiga's for 20 more years at least. Not to mention any decent amiga user has spare parts on hand.
This is a silly myth perpetuated by people who are scared of hardware, can't read or are just plain scared of tools i suspect  :D

I've rebuilt about 20 machines and put them back into the world in the last 2 years myself.
Many of the problems are trivial. Some are truly dead and become parts boards.

i would say the only really hard to find part is DMAC4,and most machines run fine on Dmac2

It was more of a try and click more than one and picked that one first. The old amithlon beast on the 50" Plasma TV is interesting to say the least.

It's between that and UAE. I had a pile of Amigas (A1200, A500 x 3, A600) and they simply took up too much room. I wish I didn't sell the 1200 though. Would have souped it up if I still had it.

Exactly, everything else are just OS4/MorphOS/AROS compatible machines not 'Amiga' which is a machine architecture and standard sold by Commodore in the mid 80s to mid 90s and then for a while by ESCOM. No Paula soundchip = not Amiga

Same here, one dead A500+ and 2x dead A2000 machines all beyond repair. If I had the money it would always be real Amiga, but without a HD for my lonely A1000 then it is not used more than WinUAE.

Anyway AROS/OS4/MOS all use UAE to play Rocket Ranger so I am just cutting out the bespoke motherboard purchase by using WinUAE :)

In order of use:

1. AROS
2. WinUAE
3. Classic
4. Amithlon

AROS is really coming along nicely, especially the Icaros distribution.  Just needs printing capability to make it really useful.
