Title: I think I REALLY want an A4000
Post by: LordSpunky on March 04, 2011, 07:38:07 PM
I want that abit more than my near standard A1200 setup.
I keep looking at ebay and wishing the A4000 was a little cheaper........I think I really really want one! It doesn't help I have totally gone back into collecting retro systems

help me! - but don't put me off!

I really love my A4000's (yeah sorry I have two :D)

Its all about the Zorro slots, think of it as an A1200 with more potential.

I have two setups as mentioned, one with PicassoIV, Tocatta SoundCard and Buddha IDE (for the DVDRW)  It has an Apollo 4040 (40mhz 040) with 128mb Ram, its in the Desktop case still and is probably my favourite Amiga, even over my A1200 PPC's.  The next upgrade to this machine will be a Deneb :)

The other is a project that wasn't meant to be, but sort of came together out of spares, I picked up a cheap case (Elbox Power Tower) and Motherboard which was going to replace my other which had some faults due to battery leakage however it got repaired and I kept both.

The Elbox Tower has an A3640 overclocked to 33mhz, Cybervision 64/3D + Scan Doubler, X-Surf LAN Card, Z3 Fastlane + 128mb and has lots of space for further upgrades, I have a faulty CSPPC that I'm hoping to get fixed and will go in this build although its not looking good :(

As I say I love my 4000's however finding a good one at a decent price can be tricky and when you do there's a good chance it'll have battery leakage, even minor leakage can be fatal to the board, so getting that repaired is essential.

Good luck in your search if you do decide to get one.

Steve.

I've been thinking the same thing, especially now that I have  a Video Toaster.

I would have continued my expansion of my A4000D but I ended up with a deal on a Blizzard PPC. Since my A1200T is now my main machine my poor A4000D sits in my closet for the time being.

I'd love to get a CSPPC for my A4000D (I even put a mediator in it) but I just don't see it happening. I'll likely at some point sell the A4000 to put money towards either a Natami or some more modern mobo. I'm kinda sick of all the troubles I've had upgrading my A1200.

My A1200 is:
Blizzard PPC upgraded to a 603/68060
  196MB RAM
  Mediator
  Radeon
  Subway USB
  Indivision AGA 1200
  Catweasal PCI
  IDEfix

and a few other odds and ends. I am currently dual booting it between OS4 and OS3.9. I don't remember the specs on my A4000D off hand other than it has max ram, a mediator, cd-rom drive and a 68030 (not a 040).

How much would one expect to pay out for a basic 4000 Anyhow?

In UK £300 GBP seems to be the going rate.  Thats for an 030 based system.

You can get an A3000 for half that price and they are arguably the finest Amiga's ever made.

Basic 040? $250-$350. More Zorro type goodies - $300-$500 typical I've seen.

I think if you want an RTG Amiga with AGA for games and stuff like DPaint, Brilliance, Scala, then the A4000 is the best choice.  But it needs to be expanded with a CPU upgrade and a graphics card, otherwise just stay with an A1200: less space, more plentiful options for a an accelerator, Indivision is nice.

Umm why do you need RTG for the apps you mentioned? They actually work nicely with AGA so would be fine on an A1200.

As far as pricing in usa for an a4k if you want a nice cared for white one, working nicely i'd say $400-500 + to be realistic

Well yeah it is all good.....you see yes I could heavy mod my A1200, and yes I could put the A1200 in a tower, but by the time I have done that I just aswell get an A4000 and work on that. My A1200 needs a CD-Rom Drive, and if I go PCMCIA SCSI, then I can't use that at the same time as a network card......A4000 seems the way to go......and by the way what type of RAM do they use and how easy it is to get hold of cards for the Zorro's? Never got this far before......

I've been watching this all week. I think it will go for around £400 which is out of my price range at the moment - but yes it does look nice, and only a couple hours away so I can pick it up........the other one on ebay doesn't look so nice, and no CDR etc.......hmmmmm......like my kids I'm shouting....I want it.....I want it.....pleeaaaaasssseeee!!!!

Yep, about the time you joined up here, was someone about 1 km away from me, who didn't want to send it and was just looking for a good home for it as he had a baby on the way.
So I donated some for the little one.
Full spec 4000, so with 16MB, superbuster 11, kick 3.1 e.t.c, standard 030 card.
Bunch of keyboards including a Micronik, which came in handy later when I got a Micronik tower.
VC3 video editing system, some aminet cd's, books, a few Philips monitors and on and on.

Was really lucky with that one, my first A4000 went for 250 euro and also the Micronik tower was 250.
Then came that almost free one.
The last one is a very clean 4000 sold by Mad_Cat_Jr (Amibay/Amigascene.nl) and full caps and simm slot workup by our legendary Amiga-Digital (Amibay/Amigascene.nl) for 300.

Thanks all for helping me with my decision...

I have a opportunity to by a A4000T with goodies for way less than that one on ebay went but I was dragging my feet because I was having a hard time justifying spending the money since I have a couple of A4000D's.

I thinks I'm gonna do it! :)

It has a Cyberstorm 040 inside it so just use Blizkick to run 3.1 from Fast RAM.

Dont wish to rain on your parade but l was in same postion as you
l always had amiga 1200s in the day amiga was going strong and 4000 looked
sooo good from that point esp in late 90s . but you got step learning curve when going
in l found l knew nothing of the 4000 to extent didnt know you had to have a cpu module
Mind you l had build mine from parts as at the time . choudint find any here in new zealand
when did get all parts including case from other parts world, one turns aghhh
always the way , the one l brought second broke down in first 30 mins use
Battery damage so always take it out befior u switch on when u get home
if there even sligist look of acid on mb , l rekon if you got money go for it
they are nice but if you doing on budget and want internet connected to as your only
amiga i rekon 1200 still better way cheaper (graphics cards abd network boards are expensive and in some case hard to find well network are avaible new so thats bonus
if your got going not buy accerator board you got probs with adding ram right kind
mine l salvaged psu out second one to get parts special finished so was okay
but since then hyad opssie moment and both need repairing
wheres with 1200s l had opssie moments and even been fine there bit delciate
treat then that way and your be fine

So the Cyberstorm replaces the A4000 CPU card? It comes with a CD-ROM Drive, what are the chances of SCSI? And before turning it on check the motherboard and remove the battery and plan for a replacement?
I've asked the question if the original CPU card still comes with it, just need to arrange collection now ;) I hope the seller agrees to Saturday morning or I can't pick it up for another two weeks!

No SCSI - Original CPU, No sign of corrosion
