Title: EGS cybergfx compatibility?
Post by: jeffimix on December 17, 2003, 01:26:24 AM
I have this slight issue. I have a Retina Z2 card in my Amiga 2000 (currently running RetinaEmu) that when my 2000 gets more pwoerful I want to update the software for. Since apparently neither Piccas096 nor CyberGFX supports the Retina Z2, I'm left wondering what (if any) CGX emulation does EGS (or RetinaEmu) have available.  Is there a driver for P96/CGX I could download somewhere for the Retina Z2? Am I just screwed?

PS: The card (atleast with RetinaEmu) won't go above 640x480 in 24bit, does this mean I only have the 2MB RAM version? ... I suspect it does

No CGX-SW on Retina2, never ever..... :-(

The 640x480 limit in truecolor may be a limitation ofthe used gfx-chip.

Aye, but does EGS run any CGX software? (I know it won't run CGX itself)

I had a quick talk with Kermit Woodall at a recent show when someone was asking about a strange connector on a GVP accelerator.  It turns out it was a connector for an in-developement version of the EGS-Spectrum.

He was talking about a Cybergraphx-like system that GVP was developing that was really fast, and could amazing things that CGX or P96 still can't do.   (Something like being able to promote screens to a picture-in-picture display, or display many screens simultaneouslyon one monitor, or promote screens in a video-wall.)  Unfortunatly GVP tanked before this came out.

Anyway, after talking, I enquired about EGS and he said that's different.  EGS is a set of graphic libraries that is similar to the amiga's own, it has it's own windows, gadgets, etc.  In order for software to use EGS, it has to be compiled to use  those EGS libraries.  So CGX software won't run on an EGS system (unless it also has CGX).

It is possible to run the WB on a GFX Card also, though (not using the EGS System). If I remember right this was only 8 Bit then (while using the EGS System you could have 24 Bit).
