Why? Well........
Amiga Inc are useless, and so were Gateway, hell not a single product I can remember since ESCOM tried to sell old hat A1200 technology for 486 30FPS Doom playing PC prices has actually been made and Walker was a pathetic spec vs 486 $400 PCs :roflmao:
Cloanto are pure scum (don't even bother disputing this with me) praying on the old bones of the dead carcass of Amiga. Getting a legal agreement to do something and then getting a monopoly on selling a very shit compilation of a FREE emulator (and this business plan has been pushed onto an even more shit C64 emulator disc) does not mean it should be allowed. In fact Cloanto and the film/music industry ALONE are to blame for rife piracy this century.
C= USA made some passable retro styled case to be sold soon after a lot of very shit AIO PCs with a C= logo for you to stick on included in the box!, I suppose at least they have done the C64x...better than what any other idiots have done so far except for the C64DTV (a superior product).
Hyperion is doing nothing exciting at all, and nobody has pushed for a business solution like Open Office at their end OR a browser like Chrome (ask google FFS, they might do it just to piss M$ off). And to top it off no chance of X86 OS4. Proof that three old duffers in a shed owning the Amiga OS is NOT a good thing at all!
A-EON the most underwelming and overpriced possible 'fast' 'cutting edge' motherboard design in a very boring case design for a ridiculous price.....if this is the future of Amiga we are screwed for sure! £2000 PPC G5 <> second coming of Amiga. Call IBM and mention Xenon CPU numbnutz!
SAM - what a pile of junk too, just an Amiga OS compatible not a real Amiga anyway.
Minimig or ACA accelerators have been the only remotely positive Amiga projects this century but these are not a new Amiga, but all credit to people involved in them.
So based on all these facts, from now on I couldn't give a monkey's about 'future' Amigas, the poor girl has been raped to death by scumbug and incompetent fools owning the Amiga IP from 1996 onwards. It's like watching the movie 'I spit on your grave' looking at the history of Amiga since C= tanked in 1994.
Sorry it had to be said, for me Amiga now is those fabulous machines in the past and anything my good friend Jeri Ellsworth may produce for us in the future. Nothing else!
(not forgetting Natami and minimig AGA but these are not available at the mo so excluded from the above and one has no price or 3D demo VIDEOS and other will not even be improvement over A4000/030 from 1992 so is not a new Amiga to me).

C'mon don't hold back, say it like it really is... ;)

and I'll never understand the Cloanto-hate. I have some idea of the time and effort it takes to put together a package like that. It's professional and quite impressive. And what the heck is wrong with being able to use ones Amiga programs on everything and anything? How is that bad???
I just don't get that weird kind of attitude

Amiga lives on in spirit, in it's contribution to computer technology in general. Every time I use my Mac I am reminded of the groundbreaking work that the Amiga did. The Amiga spirit is far far from dead.
Stop worrying so much about the future, enjoy your classic systems. Play the old Amiga games on your Android tablet or phone. The Amiga was a once in a life time game changer. Appreciate that. Load up UAE on a Mac/Linux/PC.
How many developers today cut their teeth on Amiga? The platform may have changed but the never say die spirit remains. I first came back to the Amiga wanting a new, modern Amiga. I went through all the stages. Now I know there will never be another Amiga like the original. And you know what, that's ok. It's not the name Amiga on the box that's important, it's what you take with you.
I'm heavy into tablets, I just bought an A9 Froyo based tablet that should be able to run Honeycomb. I'm eagerly awaiting the iPad 2 announcement. RIMs Play thing looks interesting with QNX under the bonnet. I like to think that these are all in a way step children of Amiga. Little all in one devices that bring computing to the masses.
-
Hey Amiga_Nut! Welcome to 2011, just fire up your favourite Amiga wotsit and enjoy the happy memories of your computing youth :)
Not sure where your Cloanto hate comes from, but honestly without them our community would be quite a bit smaller!

Now THAT is the right attitude!!!
I am so grateful for Amiga as it brought me a wonderful career, expanded my life in so many ways and introduced me to great brilliant people.
btw, persia, since you have a tablet let me ask you a question. I just got a Xoom for review and I'm trying to find a way to make screen grabs. So far no luck. some of the apps they have for this don't seem to be working and someone pointed out their tablet has button combinations that do it.
Another friend suggested getting root access but right now it sounds complicated and I'd rather find an easier solution (being basically lazy).
any suggestions?
thanks

Hey Amiga_Nut! Welcome to 2011, just fire up your favourite Amiga wotsit and enjoy the happy memories of your computing youth :)
I used to feel just like Amiga_nut...but that was almost 10 years ago. As you say, I just fire up the A1200 or UAE and enjoy myself. The rest will either sort itself out to my satisfaction...or not :)
-
It's a little flakey on my tablets, but holding the back button and tapping home is the standard Android screenshot. You need to hold the back button, if it's too short a time it will simply function as back.
-
Little off topic, but I find the mac/amiga comparisons made by some apple fans kinda baffling. Theyre like chalk and cheese. Whatever though, people can enjoy whatever they like.
As for he original post, I dont disagree terribly with the content, but the attitude towards those facts is a bit weird. Things have been this way for years and years with the "official" amiga, but that doesnt stop me enjoying my classics as I always have, and there's other options that are a bit more paletable than the official successor these days anyway if that doesnt satisfy someone. We'll always be behind the curve ball, be it OS4.x, mos, aros, whatever, but that doesnt mean it still cant be an enjoyable experience. And if someone doesnt enjoy the experience anymore, then what's the problem? Simply move on and focus on something you do enjoy.
-
and, btw, if you don't like what Others are doing or Not doing, then YOU try doing something.
be creative or stfu, thank you
You don't need to be providing an alternative in order to call a scam a scam or a failure a failure, thank you. The majority of the mess this community is in is because people have been willing to smile and nod and put up with just about anything as long as they're suitably tantalized with the promise of a new Amiga product, and it's high time that stopped and people turned their critical thinkers back on.
But, Amiga_Nut, I would like to address your general attitude of hopeless negativism. Sure, most of what you've said is pretty much right on, but that doesn't mean there can't be other projects that do finally bring a real improvement at a reasonable price. Don't get swept up in hype, but don't give up hope, either!

Sorry for off-topic, but HOLY CRAP that was crazy last night!
For those not in the know - charlie sheen snapped like a dry twig.

Mental Illness. A joke until it affects you or your loved ones.
Being someone who suffers from both a Mental Illness & a Physical Brain Illness, take it from me it's best to laugh & joke about it while you still can, cos the only other option (and it's not even an option for me) is not very welcoming or pleasant to look forward too... :)

Amiga Inc ...
Cloanto ...
C= USA ...
Hyperion ...
A-EON ...

How dare you forget to talk rubbish about AROS !!!

I haven't given up on the future, only on the Amiga trademark.
Get over it and move to AROS or MorphOS.

Mental Illness. A joke until it affects you or your loved ones.
From what I understand, Charlie Sheen is less mentally ill and more a drink/drug addict.
Of course, being an alcoholic is no laughing matter either, but in his case I think it's generally accepted as being self inflicted and so deserves much less sympathy.
Being a drug addict... well I don't know that to be true but if it is then he'll get no sympathy from me on that front. It's not like he'll have been put on to drugs by someone else and has no way out, it'll have been a concious decision that he alone has made and it'll be all his fault!
Is it obvious I'm not a fan? ;-)
-
Why? Well........
(rant)
Well I just been back for a year, between 1994 to 2009 was a complete blank for me.
I have seen lots of improvements, but when you are back in the Scene, yes, it's all going too slow.
Prices are skyhigh, except for Jens work, but that makes it even harder to get a good working setup.
That does give you reason to think, certainly when you have collected as many Amiga's as I have.
I was on a roll because I can afford it, but if you didn't have much to spend, than you would think twice about buying a full upgraded Amiga 1200 which is about 17 years old, certainly when a PS3 or Xbox 360 is much better and even cheaper.
But I still enjoy it, it's not a big rush anymore, I'm cool with what I have and if I have a golden shot at the few things on my wishlist, then I will add it to the collective :)
The future is always an uncertain factor, but I do know that the work being done right now is what is keeping the Amiga alive for now.
Yes, it could be that what I invested last year and now could be worth nothing in 5 years.
Could also be that everything I own is worth 4 times as much as it is now.
That's the thing with the future, you just don't know.
So have a :pint: , sit back,, relax, and enjoy your Amiga(s).
-
So have a :pint: , sit back,, relax, and enjoy your Amiga(s).
Oh boy, have I done that a few times with my Amigas!!! And yes, there isn't much acceptable "new" Amigas to me now, but didn't really gave up hope for the bright future products (such as NATAMI).

I want an iPad 2. Wait, is this an Amiga thread?

God Steve justed showed off the mightynew IPad and the lemmings gushed...
"Let's throw in some stuff that we could have included in the last version and hit'em again for some $ and they'll cheer for us and trample each other to bow at our alter." HaHa
Nothing like the Amiga IMHO.
Disclaimer: I know I have some Mini's but I bought them used...... plus my hackintosh eases my conscience..... :)

To be honest, I'm quite happy that Commodore went bust in 1994 (apart for being the worst day of my life). By doing that, they froze the state of the machine that I love so much. They made it possible for so many of us to make this our own platform to develop and improve ourselves. If Commodore would have been successful to keep on going, then this platform would have been long gone and transformed to something else. It would be just another modern OS like every other modern OS... nice perhaps, but something else. We would not keep the old Amiga alive as we do now.

I can second that sentiment in that I'm happy with the current state of things without the involvement of any large players.
Legacy hardware is still thriving and NG systems are growing in the hands of the hobbyists that use the systems.
In the future, Amiga can be anything from a rental TV to an X86 computer to the general consumer market.
We'll all still have our own projects moving toward what we want our systems to be.

I think that you hit it spot on here! I don't think that there are many of us delusional enough to think of the Amiga becoming mainstream again and functioning as the modern computer which is not much more than a 'household appliance."
We hold to the Amiga because it takes us back to a special time and place when computing was fun. As an additional plus, alot of the Amiga goodies that were unaffordable to many of us back in the day are now attainable and the internet is a helpful venue for learning about our favorite machines... Good Times!

Retrogenius is THE company rekindling ALL Commodore interest these days not Cloanpoo :roflmao: When was the last time they did anything for the other 4 Commodore machine formats? Before them many really nice people on ebay for pennies and did it better.
Now if they had written a single line of UAE code......might stomach the rip-off prices.....just.

Dunno, I liked the convenience of Amiga Explorer.

Commodore were keen to move to WindowsNT... That would have been pretty shyte...
This was only for the HP PA RISC CPU based A500. The A1400 was still to have Workbench as was PPC based machines later.
NT was shit, both 3.5 and 4.0 trust me, I was an engineer at the time.

The classic market on the other hand is much more interesting with new HW and software getting updated to take advantage of it. This is why I decided to get a 1200 again over a Mac or a SAM and I'm currently putting together a SATA SSD beastie equipped with a 56Mhz ACA while waiting for the new DVI/chunky IndivisionAGA :)

I see this written quite a bit, but you do realise do you not that you're not paying for the emulator ? As for Cloanto doing nothing, err,.. ever heard of Personl Paint ? How about the AROS Kickstart replacement ROM?. Just 2 recent examples. Some of the content on the Amiga Forever discs is quite entertaining (the videos for example).
-
How about the AROS Kickstart replacement ROM?.
Did I miss something, what role if any does Cloanto play in this?
-
Well the 'future' of the Amiga as far as I can tell is AROS
Maybe I am naive, but I'm still waiting for the MorphOS Team's "Proclamation for the Future". That obviously means "Post PPC".
I'm hoping it will be going in the ARM direction...
I can't see anything else being sustainable and obviously even AROS is always going to be a hobby OS.
MorphOS is, as opposed to AROS (and OS4 for that matter), actually truly usable. For real!
They are *Eon's* apart! (heh ;))
I'm sorry, I really like the AROS effort and all, and I think *it can* have a future, but it's *Nothing* like MorphOS!

Much as I like MorphOS (and from what I've seen it is very impressive), I doubt they have the resources to port it to any other platform (in otherwords they are in the same boat as Hyperion).

A future doesnt necessarily suggest the quality of an OS itself (theyre not nearly as far apart as MOS people like to suggest though). The simple fact that AROS runs on so much hardware (including stuff you can walk into a shop today and buy) is a huge plus. PPC is more or less a dead end as far as a desktop platform goes, and ARM is even behind PPC in terms of raw grunt. As a desktop system, if PPC + ARM really are the only things MOS has in it's future, then it's life span is limited. Already there's things it simply cant do because of lack of raw grunt let alone the potential to move to an even weaker (albiet interesting) architecture. Im not interested in a vs. debate, and to be honest my interest inb the amiga mainly lays in the classic camp, but AROS has so much more future potential than either OS4.x or MOS, even if its a bit rougher around the edges at the moment.

I don't understand this! Cloanto are fucking heroes! They have done so much for Amiga, and still do!

Hi,
I agree with you on this one, still don't know about morphos, can some one please tell me what kind of system does it run on.
a PC
a Amiga 1200 with a PPC blizzard
a special outdated old computer like a MAC
Does morphos have a good web program that displays the pages right
I basically use Cloanto Amiga Forever because it sure in heck runs nice on my Quad core 6600 with an ATI 5750 graphics card.
It also runs nice on my AMD 1090T hexacore with a 5770 graphics card.
Don't know about you guys but if everyone supported cloanto we may actually bring the Amiga OS back with support, after all it is going to be kinda hard to beat the hardware that is out right now.

Did you hear me oppose that?
No!
I agree!

No, no, no... Serious players (like nVidia) is using ARM to take on x86 in power computing, with Microsoft support!

He sounds terribly coherent and perfectly sane to me... :)
Coming from an insanity like you...
Cloanta has had the license from Amiga since the mcewen days before 2000 i believe. They paid good money for their license and naturally are trying to protect it. If you have ever been in any business like this you would get it.
@ smerf
Morphos can be downloaded for FREE and installed on most all powermac g4s, emac g4, and mini mac g4.!
It has an excellent browser OWB 1.11 that will display most any website that isnt too flash driven.
I know one thing I love my newly built A1200 hd and am having a lot of fun using it. I also love my peg2 and run OSx, Ubuntu, Morphos 2.x, and soon Os4! :) now that is fun

Hi,
If MAC's are all MorphOS will run on, then it is not for me, I wouldn't touch a MAC with a 10 foot pole. It is not that I don't think they are a good computer, it is just that I have a conflict with everything made by Apple over a previous business engagement that Apple let me down on. So with me it is just the principle of the thing.

Morphos can be downloaded for FREE and installed on most all powermac g4s, emac g4, and mini mac g4.!
I thought the only free version of Morphos is a time limited demo version.

Hey... even a "nuts" entitled to his opinion whether you like it or not... :)
I'm reminded of what Dirty Harry said about opinions.... they're like a**h****, everyone has one, and they're all full of s**t. ;-)

AmigaEd
Sure the morphos iso are 30min demos then you reboot and off u go. Certainly you can tell if you like it and can upgrade for $120 euro. So get a minimac or emac for $150 + morphos = $300 for a super fast amigaoni sys

??
You mean "hosted"?
Did you hear me oppose that?
No, no, no... Serious players (like nVidia) is using ARM to take on x86 in power computing, with Microsoft support!
:)
No, I mean native.
Never said you disputed it.
What you mean Denver ? The quad core arm chip that perfomrance wise is akin to a pentium4 (even nvidia claim it's not x86 level performance. Still a nice jump vs. current arm cpus, but a far cry from even x86 of a few years ago and its still a while away). 1 core of a system that is outdated performance wise doesnt fill me with hope. It's definately an interesting technology, but not really right for a desktop system.
For clarification, I like MorphOS, and as things currently stand it's has some advantages over other "NG" amiga based systems, but as far as future potential goes it's not too far removed from OS4.x.

Why? Well........
Amiga Inc are useless, and so were Gateway...
Amiga_Nut,
I have read what you have said and similar posts by other people. I respect your opinions and believe everyone has Freedom of Speech.
I loved the Amiga but have long since moved on but I'm always interested in posts like yours because they (the posts) always contain what you dislike or hate about the current Amiga situation.
So, what I would like to know is, what DO you want? I really don't know and I don't mean it disrespectful. When I see posts like this I can't help but wonder what it is you want?
I'm assuming you hate emulation but I'm not sure why. I think its a great asset to the community because you can not only relive the Amiga but you are not limited by the aging hardware. Its also kind of cool for experimentation! WinUAE gives you more chip memory than you could every have on a real Amiga.
The hate for companies that are in name only or that have promised Amiga hardware but failed is understandable.
The Amiga-like hardware projects seem to be honest work from fans who are trying to relive the 'spirit' in a new way but it seems you hate that as well.
So, are hoping for the Amiga to be resurrected?
Are you an Amiga Hardware purist?
These both seem to be dead-end roads.
So, if you are going to tell us what you hate, why don't you tell us what you want out of the Amiga Community?
Cheers!

Coming from an insanity like you...
While I may have at one point been diagnosed as Insane, when I read some of the stuff posted round here it sure does make me realise that those of us with a diagnosed mental illness are in fact the only ones who are really sane and the rest are just stark raving mad... :)

What do you mean no new Amiga products???? Only kidding, yeah Amiga has been dead for a while and that was solidified by Amiga Inc and their free t-shirts lol (did any1 actually get one after giving them your money and not recieving anything?). For me though Amiga is purely a love of the platform thing. My first computer was a C=64 and then I upgraded to the mighty miggy. I still play games (Final Odyssey anyone) on my 3000, restoring my 4000 and play Lemmings and Defender of the crown on my 1000. I also hook my CD32 up on a regular basis and play games on it too. I quite being dissapointed after years and years of it and went back to just enjoying my Amigas. I surely wish that someone would get their heads out of their A.. and make a new Amiga, but sadly I don't think that would ever happen. So for now, instead of feeling constantly disappointed, turn on your trusty Amiga and play some fun original games, get that feeling back for the Amiga and stop letting the failures of these incompetant companies bring you down. By the way if there are any game developers out there how about a online fantasy game for the Amiga :D. Cheers!!!!

Nah... I read all your posts very carefully and your insane comments and ramblings only go to show that you're not stark raving mad you're totally insane and therefore that makes you one of the sensible ones around here who's opinions actually mean & say something... :)
(PS: on the other hand and just for the hell of it, if it's a fight you want then I'll meet you outside in the A.org virtual car park... :D)
