Title: Jay Miner on Computers & Society
Post by: XDelusion on March 01, 2011, 10:58:40 PM
I just uploaded this to Youtube as it seems to relate to most of my posts there.

I forget where I found this short clip, but I felt I had to share as you don't often hear such things from those high up in the Computer industry, especially those born from the old Gates family.

Yep, Social Security is an old scam, and and old forgotten story. :(

They are usually the ones we should listen to carefully, but very few of us do.

Oh, another fun fact I thought I should tack onto this:

The Computers that were used when the (temporary) Social Security system was first erected, were built by and based upon the same exact models IBM sold to the Nazi's to keep track of people (both Jew and non-Jew alike) to see who was fit for death, and who was fit for labour.

Deutsche Hollerith machines.

I bought the hardback of this when it first came out, very interesting and enlightening.  A must read!

I remember when that book came out, I meant to read it, but never got around to it, though I'd already done a lot of reading on the subject and was kind of burned out at the time.

I think now is a good time to order it and read it at long last. :)

On that note, I was kind of shocked to see the History Channel recently talking about Operation Paper Clip.

I've carried Jay's words on my sig for several years. Those few words for some reason have always struck me in a haunting and truthful kind of way.

I'm not even sure anymore where I first heard that recording of Jay, but I do know that the video is (or was at one time) distributed with one of the versions of Amiga Forever.

I will say that I don't agree with everything that Jay speaks of in that recording, but that's not really important.

What seems important is that Jay was insightful and caring enough to consider the implications of what (even his) computers and technology could do to society. He clearly took time to consider what things were really important in the grand scheme of things.

While I think Jay would be sad to see the divisions between us (Amigans) I think at the same time he would be glad to see that many of us still enjoy his amazing creation or some spin-off of it.

Jay, Thanks for all Wonderful Years of Enjoyment and the Great Memories!

Best Regards,
AmigaEd

Hi,

@AmigaED,

What part of Pensiltucky do you live in, I live in a little trashy city called Wilkes Barre, where when you call the mayor and ask him how do you get rid of a water bed in this city (trash collection is really ridiculous) he says cut it up in small pieces and put it in a blue plastic bag (size of a 30 gallon trash bag).  This seems to be their answer for getting rid of mattresses, toilets, carpeting etc. Wonderful city to live in. At least in Parker Florida (where I used to live) they had good trash pickup, but it was sort of hard finding the mayor, he took off with $350,000 never to be heard of again.

By the way all of you Amiga.org people, don't come to Wilkes Barre smerf hunting, us smerfs are hard to find, and know the sewer routes well.

On Jay's little talk there. These words of wisdom are very true, I see to many young people taking off from work because they purchased a new game. Come in late to work because they were up late playing a game or not coming into work at all because of game playing. How many times today have I heard we can't do that the computer is down (come on to make a deposit in a bank? or buy a burger at McDonalds? ) You ever watch any of our young people hand out change, or how about kids playing outside? Just ain't happening today.

@smerf, I am up here in the hills near Sayre. Yep, good Ol-WB. Not too far away. Back in the day I used to get down ther quite a bit. Not so much anymore.

Seems that WB has develpoed quite a reputation over the last decade or so... Politicians are everywhere, good ones... not so common.

I know of one other guy near Binghamton who frequents the establishment here. I'll let him reveal himself if he so desires. May be we could meet up once every two or three years and start up a users group.

We could call our users group the...
Greater NYPenn Commodore Amiga Maniacs (GNCAM)
or the...
Northern Tier Omnipotent Amiga Users Group (NTOAUG)
or..
People for Equitable Treatment of Amigas (PETA)
or..
Commodores for Equitable Treatment of People (CETP)
or...
Amigaholics Anonymous (AA)
or...
Sons of the Amiga Revolution (No offense meant to Daughters)
or...
Maniac Amigans Showing Our Numeric Strength (MASONS)
or...
Fraternal Order of Amiga Users Keeping Microcomputing Exciting (FOAUKME)
well... I think that's a good start anyway.

Hmmm... I'm going to have to watch that again.

Can't quite put my finger on it, but I'm pretty sure that there is something not quite right with that equation. CO2 = P x S x E x C

Vaccines! With the prices pharmacutical companies are charging it would seem that it would be less costly to get weapons manufacturers involved. Having said that I do think that if we could get population down to zero then the CO2 problem would be improved.  Global warming I'm not so sure about. Perhaps, extinguishing the Sun would be the most effective method.

I thought about attending a TED conference sometime... but now I'm thinking I'll just go to see a movie instead.

Hi,

@AmigaED,

Wow, your only an hour and 54 minutes away by MSN travel. I didn't think there would be another Amiga owner anywhere near here. We may have to discuss getting together sometime in the future.

I think we should go with this one:

Maniac Amigans Showing Our Numeric Strength

Yeah that one does have a nice (and familiar) sound to it.;)
